Watch your backstop

Good reason to make sure you have something to stop your arrow if you miss or have a pass through.

Surgery was performed at Children’s Hospital in Milwaukee to remove an arrow from the body of a 7-year-old Campbellsport girl following an apparent accidental shooting.
Aryanna R. Schneeberg is listed in stable condition.

The girl was struck in the back with an arrow Sunday night while walking on the 100 block of East Main Street. The location is on the opposite side of the street near the Campbellsport Police Department.

Fond du Lac County Sheriff Mick Fink said that a bow, arrows and other items were recovered as a result of a neighborhood canvass. Fink said five detectives, himself and a Campbellsport officer worked on the investigation until around 10:30-11 p.m. Sunday.

“It appears to be the result of a stray arrow,” Fink said, adding that the victim was walking with 2-3 other girls when she was struck.

The items recovered in the proximity of the incident will be transported to the Wisconsin state crime lab, for analysis.

“We will hopefully get to the bottom of it,” Fink said.

The incident was reported at 5:37 p.m. Sunday. Aryanna was transported by Campbellsport Ambulance to St. Agnes Hospital and then transferred to Milwaukee Children’s Hospital by Flight for Life helicopter. Most of the arrow was left in place until it could be surgically removed.

Clover plot grew back a bit from last year, i've expanded it about 25% to the right & back of the cam. Also tilled up about a yard in from the outside into it to try and get rid of some rye. Put down more lime & 8.8.8. Tilled that in and planted more clover mix.

Took my new Encore out to the range...

I finally mounted my scope correctly on my new Encore, so I picked up the rest of the supplies I needed and headed out to the range with it the other day. It was my first time shooting it, and my first time using Blackhorn 209 powder, which I decided to use after reading the rave reviews about it on here. From what I read, it has been touted to be the cleanest burning, fastest shooting, most consistent type of powder out there, so I was very interested to see what it would do. I even brought along some 777 that I was giving to a friend and figured I could compare it to the BH209 as well.

Once I got there, I got all of my stuff setup and put a target up at 50 yards, just to get the gun on paper. My friend arrived and setup his lead sled so that we knew everything would be consistent with the gun itself. The load I decided to work with was 70 grains of BH209 (100 measurement in BH209 cylinder), with a Federal shotgun primer and a 250 grain TC Shockwave. 4 or 5 shots later, it was close enough, so I put a new target out at 100. 2 shots later, we had it just about dialed in at 1 1/2" high. I took 1 shot with a dirty barrel just to see what would happen with the BH209, and it shot about 3 inches low. Cleaned the barrel again for the next shot, and it shot right back within an inch or so of where it was the last shot from a clean barrel. Now I know what it will do if I need a second shot while hunting. After that last shot, I cleaned the barrel and kept the patches, as I wanted to compare how dirty the BH209 was vs the 777.

I loaded up a round of 2 777 pellets with the same primers and bullet and shot at the 100 yard target exactly how I had it set with the BH209 load. The very first thing we noticed was the amount of smoke. With the BH209, there really wasnt a ton of smoke, and what smoke there was, dissipated quickly. With the 777, we got the typical, large, thick smoke cloud that took a few seconds to dissipate. The next thing we noticed, was where the round hit, about 3 inches lower than the 2 shot group from the BH209 loads and clean barrels. It was also a bit left, not sure why though. I took the breach plug out and ran a patch through it, same as I did with the BH209, and set it aside. We put everything away and compared the patches. While the BH209 patch is slightly less dirty, I wouldnt say it was a huge difference. Here are the patches for comparison, the one on the top is the 777 patch...

Here is a pic of the target, the two shots above the bullseye is my 2 shot group with a clean barrel for each and the BH 209 load. The one just below and left is the BH209 dirty barrel shot, and the one to the left of that, in the black area, is the clean barrel 777 shot. The one thats way left was my first at 100, when we were dialing it in.

Im pretty happy with the 2 shot group, and think that with a little fine tuning of the load, should be able to put some nice groups together. I am going to stick with the BH209 for the sole reason that it doesnt smoke as much, and will be easier to see the reaction of the animal.

BTW, if the target pic is rotated, the top of the target will be on the right side of the pic. Not sure why its doing that.

found a hatched egg shell

Was out this weekend and saw some great things, however still have not filled my tag. Saw a boss gobbler at 7:30 pm Friday night w/ 3 hens who would not for obvious reasons answer me on Sat morning.

Also jumped a few hens who were already sitting on eggs.

My most unique find was a hatched turkey shell, I was pretty psyched to find this due to the size and fragility of it. I know a lot of folks on here shed hunt, but has anyone ever come across a hatched shell ? Just wondering.

I lost a best friend yesterday.

My Father-in-law Gus passed away yesterday. He has been in a nursing home for about a year. Yesterday was my daughter's communion. We got Gus an aid so he would be able to join us for the day. When he saw my daughter in her white dress at church he broke down. We made it through church and the party, he was surrounded by friends and family all day. It seems he was holding out trying to get through the day. He passed away 11:00 Saturday evening. His heart gave out, the doctor said it was peaceful way for him to pass. This man could do anything, he hunted and fished all over New York state. Had a 45lbs. bass from under the light in Montauk and shot a fair number of deer. We will miss you Gus, you were never short for a story and always had a smile on your face.
Rest in peace Dad.

Long time poster, finally did a into...

My name is Jeff Calderone and I am addicted to mature whitetail deer hunting.

With the exception of being on top of a mountain or fishing, I get no greater feeling then when I am deep in the woods. ANY deep woods... Any time...

I was never formally introduced to hunting but at 18 years old (1988) I purchased my first rifle (savage model 110 in 30-06) with one of my best friends and we started our 1st hunt in the Catskills with his family friend who lived upstate. To say things did not start off good was an understatement. We found out how to poach from a truck and trespass on private property which is all I learned from this idiot. That was the first and last time we hunted with him.

I took my 1st deer in Moose River in 2000 and have tried to up my game every year since. In 2001 I purchased a wall tent to eliminate the 45 minute drive to a motel. That was the year I purchased my 1st bow for extra time in the woods. Since then I have fallen in love with shooting my bow...

I try to hunt as often as possible yet that is usually only 2-3 weeks a year. I have never shot a doe yet I have practiced drawing on them due to getting busted during a draw on a practice buck from a stand. Now I do not draw on many deer as I usually do not hunt from a stand. I have passed on more deer then I have ever seen hunting in the ADK. I hunt an area with very few deer and hunters, yet this is part of reason I love it. Usually if you get a deer you earned it.

My biggest accomplishment was getting lucky with a mature 8 pt that I called back with a doe in heat call in 2010. Getting posted on NYantlers web site www.nyantler-outdoors.com and www.adkhunter.com was an additional highlight to a spectacular year!!!

My biggest disappointment was losing 2 mature bucks in Moose River on 2 dif. years that I had tracked the day before and ambushed at 1st light, one due to a fogged scope (Now I do not wait for anyone to come with me…or hold me up…) and one due to calling in a deer too close, 10 ft away with a gun sighted in at 50 yards No buck fever just did not compensate... Soooo upsetting... Third was shooting a 4 pt that I thought was a 6 pt again I was very upset…

I have hunted Green, Long Eddie, Roscoe, Port Jervis, Prattsville, Cooperstown, Brewster, Catskills, Moose River, Long Lake, Indian Lake, Blue Mt. Lake, Lake placid trail from Indian lake to Long lake areas, Tupper Lake, Newcomb, Warrensburg, and the cold river. I have hunted other spots but those are the area's I have hunted more than one time...

I do not hunt for meat yet I do eat my kill with pride. I pass many deer a year waiting for that one particular one with my name on him. I have been told I am a bad hunter due to this yet after explaining the concept of fair chase, exceedingly high ethics and a passion for observing deer behavior I am usually let off the hook.

Although I have had many doe in my sights I have yet to be able to pull the trigger. I realize as a hunter doe need to be controlled yet the area's that need control have owner restrictions on killing doe preventing me from taking one... Will I ever shoot a doe? I figure when the time is right it will happen...

I am usually the last person back to camp and beg my hunting partners to keep the radio on for me as I always get back to camp in the dark. I do not always get up early unless I have an ambush area I plan to get to... Those area’s are hard to find and change yearly, yet when I find one, look out!!!

I read many books on hunting especially during the off season. I never read while in hunting camp, I sleep, eat or hunt. I have gained a vast amount of knowledge though books. I figure if one books gives you one good pointer that you would not have thought of, it was worth it... Even with all this reading I find additional information that is gained while in the field is always the most reveling. The knowledge gained from books has helped me tracking more than anything else, with low deer population some times that is all I get to see…

I hunt from 10 am to dusk on a bad day and from before first light to after dusk on good days, depending on how much my hunting partners make me drink the night before… (I am not a big drinker at all, so it kicks my but!) I never come out of the woods for lunch and bring extra clothes for rain/bad weather. I never used a GPS until I purchased my 1st boat. After seeing how effective it was I started using it hunting and never leave camp without it now. Map, compass, GPS, extra food, clothes, deer calls, rabbit in distress calls a 2 way radio (no cell towers) and multiple fire starting tools and flashlights w/extra bat and bulbs. Day pack gets heavy but when it is time to eat lunch in the heavy rain or hike out 1-5 miles in the dark that extra protection is invaluable!!!

I shoot often as I feel I owe it to my prey and experience has taught me is needed to become a good hunter. As my age has gone up so have my morals and standards for hunting. Safety is a factor I will never compromise and rule with an iron fist at my base camp.

The woods can play games with your mind if you let it as many back country ADK hikers have found out. My first entry into Moose River Plains taught me to respect the woods and nature as David Boomhower was found that opening weekend, dead, on a remote mountain top, miles off his original course. His story still baffles many, including me!!! The ADK can take you to extreme levels of euphoria then slap you back into the pool of reality. With this the NFA No Fooling Around club began (Polite version). Respect Mother Nature, your physical abilities, your fire arm and your prey. These are things I value most as an ethical NY hunter.

PS: Sorry so long yet I figured since I post here often It would give good insight.

Nows the time! The poor economy is just another argument for a dove season in NY. Most opposition is from national groups, so syncronizing with other states trying to pass the same legislation would dilute the power of national AR groups.

Decided to go for broke this AM and get right into where these birds have roosted everytime I've hunted this place. I ended up in the middle of three gobblers. This one was roosted behind me...I actually walked right under him this AM!!! He was so close that I didn't even sit down for fear of spooking him. He was the first to fly down @ 5:45 and proceeded to circle around to meet up with his two buddies. I didn't have a great shot (had to buck a little beech brush) but it was the only one that I was going to get. The hevi-shot pulled through for me again. No much of a story really...no calling involved...just knew where they've been roosting and where they've been going to.

Anyone else have any problems with the birds being quiet?

This year has been so so for me. I live on the border of St./Lewis counties. I have been hunting for seven years, and have managed to fill both tags each year with no problems. This year I have had a couple close calls, but haven't put anthing on the ground yet. They past four days, it has been sunny, an 75-85 degrees out, no rain, no wind, and I have search everywhere for a bird, and have not heard one gobble.Neither my father or uncle have had any luck either in the area. I have only mannaged to call in an angry hen. I was just wondering if anyone had an answer for why the birds are not gobbling. Would the heat stop them? Please reply.

New Plot

Well here's the new plot Ive been working on. Going to lime and fertilize and till in the next couple of weeks. Then let it set for a while and then come back and roundup anything that comes up, then plant some chicory, clover, rye. Hope to show off some nice green pics in the future. Now all we need is some rain. I set up a trail cam on this trail a few weeks ago and when I went there today to weed wack the grass and brush off it I had 75 pics so cant wait to see whats on it but will leave it there a few more weeks. One potential problem I do see is the amount of turkey sign around this area. I may have to find where they are roosting before I plant and scare them off. I planted a plot about 8 yrs ago and came back a few weeks later expecting to find a nice green plot and there was nothing but dirt and turkey crap and scratchings. I was a little annoyed at 45 dollars worth of lost seed.

One angler said the bite has been slow so far in the 50-hour tournament. "With this heat, it's kind of like fishing during the dog days of summer." David Figura/The Post-StandardJustin Keaton and Christine Stout hold up a couple of nice ones. Mid-way through the tournament, a coed team from Indianapolis has jumped into the lead of the Wild Carp Classic on the Seneca River near Baldwinsville. As of 10:30 a.m. today, Christine Stout and Justin Keaton, were in the lead with 25 fish, the biggest one going 23 pounds, 5 ounces. Their total weight was 411 pounds, 14 ounces.I stopped by their fishing site at 11 a.m. at the southern end of Duke Strache's property and they were still going strong. In fact, while I was there, they landed and were measuring six more fish."We're doing well now, but you never now in this kind of thing," Stout said. "By tomorrow, we could be in last place."David Figura/The Post-StandardChristine Stout caught this bad boy at about 11 a.m. today.I doubt that.Meanwhile, anglers up and down the river this morning were talking about how slow the fishing has been so far. Some blame the heat. Others said it had something to do with the spawn -- either that the fish hadn't spawned yet, or had just finished. "I wish someone would do a study on this," said Eric Ames, of Constantia, who is fishing with Steven Ware, of Fayetteville."These fish move back and forth from the lake (Onondaga) to the dam in Baldwinsville," he said. "I'm not seeing the big groupings of fish .. we're just picking off the resident stranglers. I doubt that they've spawned yet."Nevertheless, Ames has the biggest mirror carp so far in the tournament, weighing 18 pounds, 15 ounces. It was his first fish, caught shortly after noon Sunday. If it holds, he'll get $1,080.The biggest fish overall so far, a common carp, was caught by the team of Chris Jackson and Scott Russell, of Pennsylvania and Texas, respectively. It weighed 34 pounds, 13 ounces. If it holds, they'll win $1,080.A total of 45 two-person teams are the in the competition, stretched out a various locations along the river from Baldwinsville down to the Wegman's Good Dog Park. The team with largest total weight of fish after the competition ends at noon Tuesday will earn $5,400. Each team paid $600 to enter."Things started off slow, but the bite is starting to pick up," said tournamment co-director Jason Bernhardt.Kent Appleby, who's fishing with Bill Markle, said the bite could be better, but was optimistic that things will improve by the end of the competition. They're both from Pulaski."With this heat, it's kind of like fishing in the dog days of summer," Appleby said. For more, go to the Wild Carp Week Web site.On Facebook, to the event's page by searching for Wild Carp Week.David Figura/The Post-StandardAt one point the anglers were lining up the fish to be weighed.

View the full article on The Syracuse Outdoors Blog

Lefty loosey / Righty tighty

When I finished sitting for 6 hours hoping for a Tom turkey , I stopped up to my SIL's house to help with a couple projects . She had a friend trying to remove the filter for the hydraulic fluid on her Bobcat tractor and he had a huge set of channel lock pliers and couldn't get it loose so my SIL asked me to give it a try . It was really on there hard . As I was trying to turn it my SIL told me I was turning it the wrong way . I told her lefty loosey / righty tighty and she kept yapping that I was trying to turn it the wrong way . I was laying on the ground looking up at the filter and she was standing up looking down at it .

Then she told her friend that I might be right . I said might be right yer butt , I am right ! I got it loose and removed it .

She had her friend convinced that it should be turned the other way ( clockwise for his view) and that's why the damned thing was on so snug !

I had told them that some guys used to punch a hole in the filter with a screwdriver and turn the filter that way . Her friend said that they were considering doing that just before I arrived .

She had a difficult time admitting that she was wrong !

Kinda bored so I thought I would post this gem ............

I probably already know the answer, but is there any way to eliminate or at least tone-down the eye reflections from white-flash cameras?

It started to sprinkle as I drove from Ontario to Walworth . There was enough moonlight to walk to my spot but every once in a while the clouds would pass and it would get darker . I was settled in my hub blind by 6:15 am . Sat back and relaxed . Saw a fox at 7:55 and after that a few squirrels . Heard a few shotgun blasts towards Webster way in the morning .
It rained off and on and the wind was moving the trees back and forth . I was ready to leave at noon after seeing nothing and the way the weather was acting . It was still windy at 12 but the sun came out . Shortly afterwards the sun went away and it got crappy again . I left at 2 pm .
After checking the weather for today , I decided to wait until tomorrow to hunt . We have Mass at 8:30 and then I will relax and watch the Bills - Jersey Giants Game .
The spot I hunted is the same one where I had gotten pics of several deer . No doubt that they were probably hunkered down due to the wind . The wind was in my favor but didn't help .

Sullivan's Travels

In way of introduction, since I don’t remember if I did when I did, so I’ll end this year with some
and start the New Year with some more
Where to begin, I’ll begin in the middle and give the younger folks some color on what it was like downstate back in time. Then I’ll get into how our club was formed and the risks my father’s city-folk generation took to be able to hunt their own land. This is back before the Thruway and the Quick way (New Rt 17) were built, there was no Verrazano Bridge and part of the Belt Parkway were not yet completed.
I grew up just off the water in Jamaica Bay. Back then Howard Beach was a lot of weeded lots and sparse houses. Behind what we called Rockwood Park, now New Howard Beach, was nothing but weeds and cattails as far as the eye could see. It became Spring Creek Preserve and then part of Gateway National Park.
We crabbed and fluked in summer, selling softshells crabs to the restaurants. It was neo-Huck Finn childhood living. No one knew where we were, we walked to the North Channel Bridge to fish, chased rabbits with bow & arrow, caught sea gulls by hand: we just rambled about all over the place without a care.
Got into plenty of trouble, got banged up and bruised more than once but, every woman was your mother and every man was your father so we had plenty of eyes on us even if we didn’t know it.
The rain puddles at Aquaduct Race Track held tadpoles so, we would catch them and raise them into frogs and let them go. Garter snakes were easy to catch and my neighbors raised ducks and chickens.
Crossbay Blvd was a string of clam bars, Sonny’s the best, Big Bow Wow drive-in, Trampoline World, archery range, go carts and rides. The drive to Rockaway Beach was always ended with a stop at Weiss’ for hot dogs in Broad Channel.
My father was a big duck hunter in the Bay back then and had a friend who lived in a house in the back in now Gateway. Now his friend’s father-in-law was a Russian immigrant. How he came to Queens I don’t know but, in any event as the story was told, he built this house out in the weeds and a small farm around it. The husband Frank would hunt right around the property. As told, he knew his hunting days there were over when he shot his last pheasant and it landed on the Belt Parkway.
Anyway, one day a guy knocks on the door and tells them they are living on government land. They lived there for years, had regular mail delivery but, no one knew the old man just picked an empty patch of land and built on it without any say-so.
So they got tossed off and moved up outside East Chatam. Frank was a gov’t surveyor. So he worked places like Pt Barrow, Alaska in summer and had the winter off. I spent two weeks in summer at their farm helping with chores as he was away. Cutting weeds, fixing wire fences, feeding the stock, catching catfish and so on. In fall we would go up for a few days and help slaughter and butcher the pigs.
In the early sixties, Long Island being a network of duck farms and potato fields, we used to go hunt squirrels in what is now Smithtown.
After the war, and before I was born, my father and his friends hunted wherever they could without getting thrown off. Having no land, they started on state land but it was too crowded and too dangerous with the population of idiots all over the land. They decided that the only way they could hunt was to get their own land.
In 1946 a dozen of them got together with a lawyer and incorporated a rod & gun club. But, they still needed land and this took brass balls. Twelve guys with young families, scraping by after the war are about to mortgage themselves for a hunting club. Imagine telling your wife this.

His camera snapped photos of a flock of wild turkeys — including one that had four beards. “I had gotten laid off from work. I had the time. I decided to go after him,” the Fayetteville resident said. On opening day of turkey season, he took along his favorite bow, got into his tree stand and waited. “At about 11:30 a.m. I gave a sexy hen call, a little purr — and 10 minutes late it came down the path. It was a surreal moment,” he said. “I hit it with a perfect broadside shot at about 25 yards. As soon as I heard the arrow hit, I knew it was perfect. ... like when a baseball player hits a home run. You just know it.” Wayne Masters, of Tully, a local turkey hunting guide who has hunted the birds for more than 40 years, said he’s heard about, but never seen, a turkey with four beards. It’s unusual, he said. Another guide, Mike Joyner, of McGraw, said the National Wild Turkey Federation has a listing of the largest turkeys taken in the state. He noted that some have had as many as seven or eight beards, a characteristic that gives them more points in the total score that the rankings are based on. Paduano, thinking he might have had some kind of state record of taking a four-bearded turkey with a bow, talked to local officials from the Turkey Federation. He found out his 18-pound bird didn’t make the grade. He sent the carcass to a taxidermist in Pennsylvania and got the mount back several weeks ago. “It’s in my den,” he said.Submitted photo

View the full article on The Syracuse Outdoors Blog

Syracuse.com - Local carp fishing team angling for good finish in Wild Carp Classic which begins today

Starting at 10 a.m. today, 45 two-person teams will be fishing for 50 straight hours, rain or shine, at predetermined sites, called pegs, along the river. Peter Chen / The Post-Standard ERIC AMES(left), of Constantia, and Steven Ware, of Fayetteville, are teammates who will be competing in Sunday’s Wild Carp Classic in Baldwinsville. They are standing along the shore of the Onondaga Lake Inlet, near Wegman’s Good Dog Park, in Liverpool. Go to syracuse.com/videos to watch Ames and Ware practic´ing on the Seneca River last week. Competitive carp anglers Eric Ames and Steven Ware often get ribbed about their passion.“Yeah, I always get the fun and games about it at work,” Ware said. “But if you like to catch a lot of big fish, there is no other fishing than carp fishing. It’s unique. You’re drawing the fish to you and holding them there, rather than pursuing the fish. It takes a certain kind of skill.” Ames added, “People ask me what I’m doing catching all those slimy, smelly fish. My response is that I’ve probably caught more fish in a short period of time than some people have caught in their entire lifetime.”The two are the top local team going into today’s Wild Carp Classic on the Seneca River, which is the marquee event of five catch-and-release tournaments slated for this week.Starting at 10 a.m. today, 45 two-person teams will be fishing for 50 straight hours, rain or shine, at predetermined sites, called pegs, along the river. Competitors, who paid $600 per team to enter, are coming from 11 states, Canada and the United Kingdom. The team with the most total weight of fish caught will earn $5,400, in addition to other prizes.Ames, 43, who owns a local construction company, and Ware, 52, a carpenter, have been fishing in the big spring carp tournaments on the Seneca River since the events started five years ago. In 2009, they finished second by catching 2,500 pounds of carp and earned $3,500. It was the best local finish ever in the Seneca River competitions, which annually feature anglers from Europe, where carp fishing enjoys an elevated status, like bass fishing in this country.“In 2009, we stayed up 60 straight hours, being up for an additional five hours on either side of the competition,” said Ware, who lives in Fayetteville. “We were hurting. I wore rubber boots the whole time. One of my toenails fell off.”The two have been fishing for five years as a team in tournaments on the Seneca and St. Lawrence Rivers. In their best year they only earned “a couple of thousand apiece.” Their biggest carp weighed in “the mid-30s.”“We’re just in it for the enjoyment of fishing, the sport,” Ames said. Both anglers say they’ve each spent more than $8,000 for special 12- to 13-foot carp fishing rods and reels equipped with 60-pound braided line, pole racks, bite detectors, flavored scents and bait, special carp nets and a host of other equipment and creature comforts that have mostly been purchased online from English and Scottish tackle suppliers. The two have fished for other fish throughout their lives — trout, bass, walleye, even marlin — but at this point carp fishing is their favorite. In addition to catching lots of big fish, they enjoy the challenge of putting out all sorts of bait into the water, trying to figure what will bring and hold the carp to their area so they can hook them. They noted that the average competitive carp angler is 45 years or older and college-educated.Last spring, the Seneca River was high and muddy, conditions that put a damper on the amount of fish caught during this competition. This year, the conditions look great, they said.“We’ll have as good a chance to win as anyone. If we get the right spot and work it right, we’ll do well,” Ames said. Also this week The Wild Carp Classic ends at noon Tuesday. The action continues with the JBG Triathlon, featuring three individual fishing competitions: the Big Carp Challenge (Wednesday), the Big 4 Challenge (Thursday) and the Total Weight Challenge (Friday). For more on the events, see the Wild Carp Week Web site.

View the full article on The Syracuse Outdoors Blog

Syracuse.com - Cortland meeting set for June 12 to discuss wild boar problem

"Feral swine are known to inhabit northern Cortland and southwestern Onondaga counties, southeastern Cayuga, northeastern Tompkins and Tioga counties," according to a 2011 DEC press release. About four weeks ago, I was driving up Route 41 through the town of Scott just after sunset. I glanced off the road and spotted something odd, way off in the back corner of a field. I immediately pulled over.I saw more than a dozen, solid black dots — some bigger than others — in a group. The bigger dots were in one place, while the smaller ones were scurrying back and forth. They were too dark to be deer, and they sure didn’t look or act like wild turkeys or coyotes.I stared at them for a good 15 minutes. I didn’t have my binoculars. After talking to state Department of Environmental Conservation staff and others, I’m convinced I was viewing a group of feral hogs — mostly likely Russian wild boar, which have established themselves on the local landscape. “Feral swine are known to inhabit northern Cortland and southwestern Onondaga counties, southeastern Cayuga, northeastern Tompkins and Tioga counties,” according to a 2011 DEC press release, which noted that they’re escapees from a local private hunting preserve. “These aggressive invasive species cause serious agriculture and environmental damage and can degrade water quality and threaten human health.”They procreate like crazy, having litters of six to eight piglets two to three times a year. I have run photos during the past several years of hunters who’ve bagged them — some in the 350- to 400-pound range. The American Wildlife Conservation Foundation has scheduled an informational meeting at 1 p.m. June 12 at the N.Y.S. Grange headquarters, 100 Grange Place, Cortland. The topic is “Feral Swine Management and Disease Surveillance,” and the speaker is Justin Gansowski, an official from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service. The idea is to raise awareness about feral swine in our area. Bob Chambers, a board member for the Conservation Foundation, told me this week he’s contacting farmers, sportsmen’s clubs and others who may have a stake in this issue.“They’ve already done a lot of damage to farms and landscape locally,” he said, noting that southern states and other parts of the country are over-run with them.In New York, all that’s needed to hunt them is a small-game license. There’s no season, daily limits or prescribed methods. They can be baited, hunted at night or hunted with dogs.Simply hunting them, however, isn’t the solution. Killing some results in the others scattering over greater distances. The most effective way to deal with them is to catch them in large, corral-type traps that capture most of the group at the same time. However, that can get expensive and DEC wildlife staff has found in recent years that it’s easier said than done. For more on the June 12 meeting, call 625-4416 or see the American Wildlife Conservation Foundation website at awcf1911.org. Meanwhile, I’m looking to talk to hunters who have harvested wild boar locally during the past year. Give me a call at 470-6066 or email me at dfigura@syracuse.com.

View the full article on The Syracuse Outdoors Blog

Well, thinkin i'll be headin up for my maiden voyage to Lake Ontario with my new boat memorial day weekend. Heres the catch. I'm 18, my new boat is my first boat i've ever owned. It is a 12' Misty Harbor and it came with a 1967 10 HP Johnson Sea Horse and an electric trolling motor. Settin up the boat this sunday for the trip. Any tips or advice for salmon fishin out of a small boat??? Plan on running 2 dipsy rods and one downrigger. It was the biggest fish of the day, but it was caught moments after the tournament ended.Today's Wild Carp Week Celebrity Challenge at Mercer Park in Baldwinsville along the Seneca River resulted in a 5-way tie, with none of the contestants catching any carp during the allotted time. However, moments after the tournament ended at 2 p.m., three of the contestants reeled in carp. The largest, a 12-pound, 7-ounce fish, was landed by professional magician Wade Live. Baldwinsville Mayor Joe Saraceni and myself also landed fish. All celebrity anglers -- Wade, meteorologist Wayne Mahar, investigative reporter Jim Kenyon, Saraceni and myself -- all got $2,000 apiece to donate to the charity of our choice. The $10,000 for the tournament was put up by Wild Carp Companies, the group that is running Wild Carp Week. The winner was originally slated to get $3,000.Despite the lack of fish, it was a beautiful day to fish and a crowd of about 75 people watching the event, which lasted from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.I hold up my 11-plus pounder. I was teamed up with Romanian native Bogdan Bucur, of Chicago, who last year teamed with Mihai Aciu, also of Chicago, to win the Wild Carp Classic. My carp today weighed a touch over 11 pounds. Saraceni's fish, which was not weighed, appeared to be about 5 pounds, said tournament co-director Jason Bernhardt. The following charities will receive $2,000:- Priscilla Mahar Animal Welfare Foundation (donated by Wayne Mahar)- Make A Wish Foundation of CNY (donated by Wade Live)- The Greater Baldwinsville Community Development Fund (donated by Joe Saraceni)- CNY chapter of the Alzeiheimer's Association (donated by myself)** Advanced Strategies Adventures and the CNY Food Bank will receive $1,000 each (donated by Jim Kenyon)A group shot of all the contestants and their guides. My guide, Bogdan Bucur and I pose with my plaque and the $2,000 check I'm donating to the CNY Chapter of the Alzeihmer's Association in memory of my dad and my Uncle Stan, who's still alive. The Celebrity Carp Challenge is the first of five tournaments in Wild Carp Week. The Wild Carp Classic, which is the marquee event , kicks off at 10 a.m. Sunday morning on the Seneca River. It features 50 straight hours of fishing by 45, two-person teams at various assigned sites (pegs) along the river. The anglers will have to stay at their assigned spots until the contest ends at noon Tuesday. The winning team will get $5,400. Other cash prizes will be awarded fo rthe largest fish and the Big Four (total weight of the four biggest fish caught by a team).Three other individual days of competition, the Big Carp Challenge, the Big 4 Challenge and the Total Weight Challenge, will follow on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, respectively. For more, see the Wild Carp Week Web site.

View the full article on The Syracuse Outdoors Blog

Been seeing and getting pics of woodchucks in my plots and right near the cabin. Thought I better try to take a couple out, before they multiply and/or burrow under the cabin or sheds like they did a couple years ago.

Shot this big female this afternoon. She was damn near as long as my .223 compact!! LOL I was very surprised that the exit hole was only about as big around as a pencil! Not much bigger than the entrance hole! I shot it in the back of the head and it came out near its nose. The last few that my son shot with this gun, it made an exit hole about the size of a baseball!

Don't Waste Those Gobbler Thighs!!

I know a lot of guys just breast out their spring gobblers, but I just had leftover turkey cacciatore for lunch, man was it delicious!! Thought I'd share the recipe:

4 boneless, skinless turkey thighs
1/2 onion sliced
1 bell pepper sliced
10 mushrooms (or more)
1 jar tomato sauce (or homemade, if you make your own)
1/2 cup red wine
1 beef bouillon cube
2T chopped garlic
1 cup water
1t chopped rosemary leaves

Cut the thighs into cubes, and brown in a heavy skillet in olive oil. Remove from pan. Saute the onions, peppers, and mushrooms in the same skillet until softened, remove set aside from the turkey cubes. Now add the garlic to the skillet, just cook for about 20 seconds, add the red wine, water, bouillon cube, and tomato sauce, bring to a boil, add the browned turkey cubes, cover well with sauce, add the rosemary, and place in a casserole dish. Cover with foil, and bake in the oven at 350 degrees for 2 hours.

After 2 hours, add the sauteed onions, peppers & mushrooms, cover back up with tinfoil, and place back in the oven for 1/2 hour, adding a little water to thin the sauce out if needed.

Serve over rice, spaghetti, or noodles.

As you can see from the screen name, there are two of us. My wife and I love to fish (Largemouth, smallmouth, crappies, perch, sunnies, whatever else...oh and of course Stripers!!). We also love to hunt, mostly bow. I do gun hunt but she doesn't as of yet. Anyway, just wanted to introduce myself to the community and if anyone has or knows of any hunting opportunities in Westchester, Putnam or Dutchess, I'd love to be considered. Thanks again and good luck hunting!!

Bingo, here they come, three hens flew past him then the gobblers (two) came walking by at 25 yards. The birds never made a peep. I'm not sure how much calling he did.
Now he's in the bourbon.........<grin>

Alright guys, I already gave ya a basic lowdown on this dude. This is the crap I live for! I saw him feeding in the grass and got set up for some long range shots...which I got plenty of. Then he spotted me and became curious making his way in to 20ft before making himself comfortable and munching down the greens.
At one point he got my wind and began huffing at me and took a few bounds my way. Assuming he was just trying to intimidate me I sat tight and he layed down and went back to feeding! For 2 hours this went on and at times he was so close I couldn't frame him entirely at 70mm! What an AWESOME day in the sticks again!
Here's a few of my fav's!

For those that have filled tags or at least had birds come in, what's your strategy for decoys? I had a jake and feeding hen out this morning and I'm not sure but I had a hen come in close then change her mind and scoot around the decoys and me in the blind. Wondering if it was the decoys or the blind. She didn't spook just chose to half circle around me an the decoys. Was thinking maybe just go with the lone feeding hen in the morning. Any tips? All I saw this weekend were hens. And with the lack of vocals I'm willing to try anything!

Plot watcher verses Bushnell trail cams with field view

Was looking into buying a plot watcher and noticed Bushnell had cameras now that are not only triggered by motion but can be set on what they call field view which is nothing more than a plot watcher. The newer plotwatchers have different lenses you can put on one is a wide view lense and the other is a telescopic lense both would be good for watching a large field. But the bushnell field view can be set to take pics every minute and the motuion will still take pics if something walks by in between. Not sure what to do. Anyone have any thoughts.

My first AR15 build

Ive been looking at AR15s for a few years now, but have been hesitant to spend that kind of money on something i didnt know alot about. Ive considered buying a new, factory rifle, used factory rifles and used custom builds, but I could never find exactly what I wanted. Ive been reading up on doing a custom build from a bare lower up, and it looks like it shouldnt be that tough, so I came up with a plan for my first build.

The gun is going to be a carbine length piston drive, 556 upper with iron sights on a flat top receiver. The lower will be pretty standard, but with my choice of parts. I am going to build it using a stripped lower and upper from a local company. So far I have the parts and cost for the lower planned out. Heres the parts list for the lower:

All Star Tactical forged lower
Daniel Defense lower parts kit/trigger with Magpul MOE trigger guard
Magpul MIAD grip
BCM Milspec buffer
Stock will be whatever I find a good deal on. Probably the Magpul CTR or Carbine

I havent gotten too far with the upper yet, but heres what I have figured out so far:

All Star Tactical forged upper with forward assist
Adams Arms carbine length piston kit
Magpul MBUS sights

Should be a fun gun for at the range and plinking. I also plan to put a few different uppers together for different purposes. Probably a varmint config (20" bull barrel gas system) and maybe a 458 SOCOM setup for big game.

I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it myself. Last night I was working on pulling weeds out of one of our flower beds when I looked up and spotted a brown clump, some 20 feet up in one of our locust trees. It was a ground hog, obviously chased up there by my dog, Cali. Cali has taken out two of these creatures before and is always on the lookout.Anyway, the ground hog appeared to have its head wedged in a branch and at first my wife, Laura, and I thought it was dead. I grabbed a ladder and a canoe paddle and carefully put the ladder up against the tree. Just then, it blinked its eyes and slightly moved its head. We then realized it was alive. I slowly climbed the ladder and started to come at it with the canoe paddle. The animal suddenly lifted its head, started to scramble down the tree -- and then lost hold and dropped about 15 feet to the ground. It hit the ground with a thud, righted itself and then quickly scrambled away. I was cursing myself afterward because I had my work camera with videotaping capability in my car, which was parked nearby in the driveway.Afterward, Laura went into the house and Googled "ground hogs" and "climbing trees." She found this video, which I included in this entry to prove that....Yes, ground hogs to indeed climb trees to escape predators!!

View the full article on The Syracuse Outdoors Blog

Three of those streams are in Onondaga County: Butternut Creek, Limestone Creek and Chittenango Creek. Today: Butternut CreekMay 25: Limestone CreekJune 1: Chittenango Creek Gary Lauzon has been fishing Butternut Creek since he was 4.“My father took me below my grandfather’s house. I caught my first trout down there and I’ve been hooked ever since,” he said.Lauzon, now 63, still lives nearby in the town of Jamesville. He prefers to fish Butternut with salted minnows or worms, and on occasion will throw a spinner.“It’s not a real wide stream,” he said. “There’s a lot of places you can cross if you have hip boots or burly boots.”He noted there’s a host of bridges and state Department of Environmental Conservation parking lots and pull-off areas.“This is a good stream to take a kid fishing — by the bridges, the big pools,” he said. “You can sit them down, feed them, get them happy and teach them how to fish.”Lauzon said his biggest fish out of the stream was a 17½-inch brown he caught on a salted minnow. Most of the fish he catches are brown trout. Occasionally, he’ll land a brookie.Down toward Jamesville, he added, there are wild rainbows in the stream.“Some guy was raising rainbows a few years back and had trouble with the foundation of his pond and they got into the creek,” he said.Lauzon has fond memories of Butternut. He remembers when he was 12 to 14 years old and his father would drop him off at Route 20.“He’d say, ‘I’ll meet you (downstream) at the church in about three hours,” he said. “I’d then fish all the way down to the church by myself. Sometimes, I’d have my limit before then.”BUTTERNUT AT A GLANCE Butternut Creek goes from Apulia Station, through the Jamesville Reservoir and combines with Limestone Creek. The two then flow into Chittenango Creek at Minoa. The year-round section, where fish can be kept year-round — limit of five fish, with two no longer than 12 inches — stretches from the creek’s mouth to Route 20. Type of fish: Butternut offers wild and stocked brown and brook trout. In addition, a section in the lower half around Jamesville has wild rainbow trout. Each year, it’s stocked with 5,200 one-year-old brown trout (8-9 inches) 2,400 two-year-old brown trout (12-14 inches) and 600 brook trout (6-8 inches). There have been reports of browns in the 20-inch-plus range in some of the deeper holes. Public fishing: There are a number of easy access points at bridges and plenty of holes where fish can be taken with worms, salted minnows or lures. It’s easily fished from shore or by wearing hip boots or knee-high boots. There are 8.1 miles of land along its banks for public fishing. For maps and more about this stream, see the DEC website at dec.gov. For the fly guys: The creek’s not known for its outstanding insect hatches. It’s a good stream, though, for streamers and nymphs. The upper part is overgrown, and casting is tough. There’s more open space downstream.FOR MORE ON BUTTERNUT CREEK, SEE THE DEC WEB SITE.

View the full article on The Syracuse Outdoors Blog

The northern pike, perch and bullhead action continues on Owasco Lake. CNY FISHING FORECAST Bait stores (list and map).Reminder: The walleye, northern pike, pickerel and tiger muskie seasons opened May 5. INLAND TROUT STREAMS Streams across the area continue to be in great shape. To find out how many trout (and what kind) are stocked in your favorite Onondaga County stream, call 689-0003. To hear the DEC’s weekly fishing report, which includes a list of which streams have been stocked in Region 7, call 607-753-1551. To read about trout fishing tips, see the DEC Web site.LAKE ONTARIO Up and down the shoreline, good brown trout fishing continues, with anglers cashing in at anywhere from 7 to 20 feet using stickbaits. Salmon are being caught from 60 to 200 feet, using mainly spoons. SALMON RIVER There were reports of smallmouth bass coming in from the lake to spawn, along with a few “drop-back” steelhead in the lower river. For the steelhead, use egg sacs, trout beads and night crawlers. OSWEGO RIVER Trout, sheepshead and rock bass — and the occasonal walleye — continue to be caught throughout the river.ONEIDA LAKE Walleye fishing continues to be good. The fish are scattered throughout the lake and are being taken in 3 to 20 feet. In a boat, the preferred depth is about 15 feet. Use black-and-purple or brown jig, tipped with a night crawler. Offshore nighttime activity with stickbaits also continues to work. Try a Challenger minnow or a Storm Jr. Thunderstick. CROSS LAKE/SENECA RIVER Fishing has been slow, but should pick up by this weekend. CAYUGA LAKE Anglers trolling are getting lake trout, brown trout and Atlantic salmon. Lake trout are coming on flasher and fly rigs fished 100 to 125 feet down over 130 to 175 feet of water. Fishing stickbaits on the surface over 15 to 25 feet of water is working for the brown trout and salmon on the south end of the lake. Lake trout jigging is very good with fish ranging from around 50 feet out to 150 feet of water. SENECA LAKE Yellow perch are still in shallow but the bite has slow. Atlantic salmon are still being caught near the surface by trolling stickbaits. A few brown trout have been mixed in with the salmon catch. Lake trout fishing has been good for anglers trolling flasher/flies or spoons with downriggers. Right now lakers are near bottom over a wide variety of depths ranging from 40 to 120 feet.OWASCO LAKE Anglers are catching a lot of pike on large suckers and shiners and perch on fathead minnows. Also, bullheads are continuing to bite on night crawlers and crayfish at the southern end. OTISCO LAKE Black crappies and yellow perch fishing has slowed, but some are still being taken in the shallows on small minnows. A few walleye are being taken off the causeway and locations off shore. One angler reported a 23-incher.SKANEATELES LAKE The DEC launch is open and one dock is in. Bass are moving up in warm water areas. Perch are hitting well in the north end of the lake in the 20 to 30 foot range using small minnows. Lake trout are hitting near bottom in 40 to 50 feet of water. SODUS BAY Anglers continuing to catch rock bass around the docks, using jigs and spikes. Pike fishing is slow. SANDY POND Black crappies are still hitting around docks. Some bullheads are also being taken. ST. LAWRENCE RIVER The bullhead bite continues to be strong on Eel Bay, with perch fishing good at the bay’s mouth. Northern pike are being caught in nearly every bay, particularly in depths of 5 to 15 feet. A good choice for the pike anglers is a bucktail jig tipped with a leech. WHITNEY POINT RESERVOIR Reservoir is high and muddy, but fishing remains good. Lots of walleyes are being caught by trolling with night-crawler harnesses, while others are drifting with jigs tipped with night crawlers. Anglers fishing from the shore have been cashing in with night crawlers as well.

View the full article on The Syracuse Outdoors Blog
