Corn Planter

Recommended Posts

Does anybody know of a place in WNY where I can rent a 2 row corn planter?  Or is there anyone on this site that would be interested in renting theres for a weekend?  I consider myself a very reasponsible person and am willing to pay a fair amount to rent one.

My camp is near Letchworth Park, but I am willing to drive a bit to make it happen.

Figure it is worth asking here..

Either way, PM me with any information...

Not sure what you have for equipment but I highly recommend planting corn by broadcast method unless you have plans to harvest some.

Hey Western... just out of curiosity, what is the benefit to broadcasting the corn as opposed to using a corn planter?

The benefits for me is I dont have to buy a corn planter and I have very rocky soil.  Rocks are not good for planters.

I have planted corn 5 times in the past 7 years and have had great results.

If you are not harvesting the corn, no need for a planter.....  using one is fine and nothing wrong with it, but it may save you $$$ on equipment.

Here is a thread that describes my method, in a few posts... good pics too

I have much better luck with hunting row planted corn than broadcast. But you gotta do what you gotta do.....

G-Man how many pounds per acre did you use when you broadcasted?

I still have standing corn this year as of last Saturday,  WNYbuckhunter and I looked for sheds... I was shocked to see corn still left.

This past year I planted a little too heavy.  It was very thick, but I had great ear production.   This coming May I will plant at the specific recommended rates!

I can see how row planting makes for easier hunting...

Also with a planter you will use less corn seed than broadcasting.  I get my seed for $20 a bag, a bag is ussually 40 - 50 pounds so I dont worry about this much.

How many pounds per acre do you recommend when broadcasting the corn?

20 pounds MAX.

I took a pail and weighed 10 pounds... marked the pail at the 10 pound mark, then I measure off a 1/2 acre and put 10 pounds in my 3pt broadcast spreader.

Last year... I tried to be quick and planted it too thick.

An 60 lbs bag plants 3 acres for me on 28 in rows at heaviest seeding rate. If your broadbroadcastig 20-30 lbs per acre. Depending on your dragging covering method. The ad vantage of a row planter is your seed is planted a a set depth. 1.5 Inches for me. Broadcasting, then dragging /discing/;cultimulching into three ground is possible with Practice and good depth control. But shallow seed may be more succeptible to drought, predation by squirrel, birds, rodents, ect. If you can find a planter whose fert hoppers are rotted away... as long as it plants you can brodcast your. Fert over it.. my planter is from 1948..and it is wore..i have very rocky ground and every 5 . Years i weld new skids on it . But it only cost me 150 bucks out of a hedgerow....
