Firearms discharge law in Wayne County

Recommended Posts

I have a burning question that I haven't been able to find an answer to. I hope the folks here can help.

I grew up in Ohio where I always practiced shooting (firearm & bow) on my grandfather's farm. A few months ago I moved to North Rose, NY in Wayne County. I have the acreage and proper area to safely shoot, and would like to start practicing here. But I've been trying to find the local regs around it. Anybody here point me in the right direction?

I am a member of a club in Penfield, but that's one heck of a drive from here. Not to mention it's sometimes not the safest place to be, although they do their best.

Thanks for any help!

My suggestion would be to contact the NYS Trooper sub-station in Wolcott or the Wayne Co Sheriff, since they'd be responding if a neighbor reported you. Oh yeah, if it ends up being legal to shoot, I'd meet & talk to neighbors 1st, letting them know what you'd be doing.

Can't imagine any specific ordinaces in the Town of Rose regarding this. Probably falls under the DEC's shooting set-back regulations and a lot of common sense.

BTW - There's a gun club in Williamson, if all else fails. Although it's still ~20 miles from N. Rose. http://www.williamsongunclub.org/

It's time to go down to your town hall and become acquainted with your town clerk. If she/he is anywhere near as good as ours, they will know more about town ordinances than the supervisor, town lawyer or anyone else down there .... lol. If she/he can't quote the local law right off their head, they will know exactly where to access it. These people are amazing sources of info for all things local. Everything is right at their finger-tips.

Thanks for the feedback, everybody. I'm going to take a walk later today and say 'Hi' to my neighbors. Then, I'll give the Sheriff and local Troopers a call. And the town clerk once I find their contact information.

Did you check for a town web-site? Most towns are on the net now and should have contact info and office hours.

Yep, Wayne Co. outside of village ordinance, is 500' and safe backdrop.

THey are pretty lax about it when done safely/smartly. We were visited one day last fall sighting in slug guns. They more or less talked to us about what we were shooting and where we were hunting than anything. They hunted as well, never even asked us anymore about it, and told us to carry on as they left. Said the complaintants would just have to deal with living in the country since we were above board.
