So, my wife has friends from college who live on the Kenai Peninsula in  Alaska.  Damn the luck, if  it our trip just didn't coincide with the salmon run on the Kenai River.  I fished mostly with my wife's friend's sister, and caught a mess of red and silver salmon.  I went out for 2 days on a charter from Homer and caught  this.  First  pic is a 170# halibut, plus a few others, we also caught ling cod, and rock bass.  Second day, we boated 13 halibut (went for limit, not size) and 3 king salmon  Freezer is full and I can't wait tll we go again. post-2987-0-93188900-1406426925_thumb.jppost-2987-0-39675800-1406427091_thumb.jp

Awesome catch! I actually have family in Kotsabue (unsure of the spelling) and Anchorage, though I have never been able to visit for a vacation. I have heard some wicked fishing stories about the salmon and halibut. I guess those halibut can get giant size and pull on a rod like no other fish of that weight class. Sounds like a fishing dream vacation to me, maybe some day....

Awesome trip, my friend..Nothing wrong with reds and silvers..

I love Alaska...I've fished halibut and salmon out of Homer and Juneau and salmon, leopard rainbows, grayling and dolly varden in the Mulchatna River and several tributaries.

Those barndoor halibut are awesome..I have had them nearly take the rod away from me when my drag was set a little too tight. Imagine catching a 100+ pound bluegill..

After you land one of them, you sit down, wipe the sweat off your brow, and hope that ANOTHER one doesn't bite for awhile...
