So I've been dying to go hunting since a young kid and no one in my family hunts so It's been hard to but since I'm grown enough I can't let another season pass me by. Problem I have is I'm from queens and it's a process to get my rifle license I'm going to get a compound bow for now and am taking a bow hunting course to get my license. Does anyone from here have a rifle license with prior minor arrest record ? I'm just confused on to what to do, when I get my bow hunting license do they give me tags for deer or turkey when I'm done or is there another process for that? Also do I need to take a hunters safety course before the bow course? Where do you find places to hunt and where can I learn how to break down a deer after I hopefully hunt one? I'm sure I have more questions as I go on just trying to get this rolling as to hunting season is creeping up fast. thanks for any of the help

This map will let you know where you can hunt.  There are other lands available as well but the state land is a decent place to start.

You have to take your hunter safety course and your bow hunters safety course.  Passing the course only gives you a certificate that allows you to buy the license.  From there, you have to actually buy the license.  You buy according to what (and in a way, where) you will be hunting.

Westchester is bow only.  Putnam County and Long Island is shotgun, muzzleloader, and bow but no rifles allowed.

It really helps if you have a car.

Here is a link to last years Hunting & Trapping Regulations Guide.  I recommend you read it.  This years edition isn't out till a couple of more weeks.

I agree with elmo! There is no harm in picking up the phone and calling the dec. They are usually more then willing to help out!  If you have any questions POST POST POST! Open mouths get fed!  Don't let the arrest stop you from trying.  Hunting is a healthy pure and progressive sport in nature.  You will find the more hunting and time spent in the woods.  The more you begin to learn about yourself as a person!  How you work, handle defeat, physical limits, as well as under extreme pressure when it comes time to make the shot!  Good luck and if you have any questions feel free to ask!
