Fruit Id?

wondering what this is. found em when I was out scouting. trying to figure out if its worth setting up where I found em.

 

funny thing was I couldn't exactly pick out what tree they were falling from. plan on going back with my binos and trying to figure it out. but they were riiiight near my cam.

looks like those old antique marbles.  A hackberry tree maybe or an ornamental of some kind?

first time I saw em hate not knowing, my dog tried to eat em but I stopped him. plenty of squirrels in the area around em though. figure they must be sweet cause there weren't many on the ground.

good questions, don't know what I was thinking. picked it up. took a pick dropped it to the ground. if I get a chance to head back this weekend will cut one open and take a pic

look big to be hackberry, maybe a strawberry tree fruit?

hey vince1, not a fruit. its called a Gall. in your case a red oak gall, pictured below. its a type of insect parasite, casued by wasps. it causes little to no harm to the tree however.

Yes, I have found a few, and they are always under oak trees.

thanks for  the info,  and good read. glad I didn't slice into it. but now im kinda curious about whats inside. good to know they are harmless
