New to forum and hunting

Hello everyone,

As the title states I am a new hunter and can't wait to read all of the great info on this forum. I am excited to get out and begin my hunting experience. Just purchased my first shotgun yesterday.

Have you completed the hunter safety course yet? What shotgun did you pick up? Which areas will you be hunting as others in those areas might be able to point you in the right direction.

Yes I did complete the safety course. I purchased a Mossberg 500 Field/deer combo 12 guage.

I would like to hunt sterling forest. It's close to home. I will also look to hunt in the Adirondacks once I have some experience, because I am purchasing a house on Sacandaga lake.

Welcome.  Does your Mossberg have a slug barrel that has rifling in it or is the bore smooth?

Both. It has the rifled slug barrel with the cantilever and the smooth barrel.

I assume you'll be looking for a scope for it as well.  Lots of experience on these forums that can give you some good advice on scopes and sabot slugs to use.

In case you don't know. Sterling Forest does not allow gun hunting till November 1st and a permit is needed.

I did know that but thanks. I downloaded the paperwork. I was looking to mostly deer hunt but was curious about turkey and other small game or birds as we'll. what are my options in the area?

Turkey - good. Birds - non existent - Predator - Good - squirrels - to many. Can hunt predator at night with separate permit. No matter what you hunt. You need to scout and learn the areas.

Welcome Coach! Sounds from the above post that you might have to pick up a .22 rimfire and do some squirrel hunting. It's a great way to learn or hone your hunting skills and get some scouting done. Plus, they're pretty tasty and a lot of fun to hunt.

That's a good idea. I just don't know if my wife would like me to get another gun so early in the game. It was a hurdle getting the first one. Just like most of the people on this board I am sure that you all have multiple hobbies. Fishing......etc.

I prefer the 22LR for squirrels in the early season when the trees are still green with leaves but a shotgun is actually more ideal for it since there is going to be a lot of leaves blocking their view.  The squirrels also allows you to get a little closer since they can see you through the leaves either.  During the winter, the 22LR works better than the shotgun since the without any leaves for cover, the squirrels tend to spot you a little earlier and keep a little further distance.
