So went out to Spring Farm in Sag Harbor today with a few buddies and had our first pheasant hunt!! It was a blast, it was incredible watching the dogs work and moving with them flushing birds. We ended up getting 16 pheasants!! And spent the rest of the day cleaning the birds back at the house and cooked one up to enjoy our harvest!!

Good hunt!! I use to hunt pheasants like a mad man. I loved folding one up after the dog really worked for i, and  then watching the dogs excitement. I got out of it, years ago, when I started to really get into bow hunting and the seasons conflicted.

Your post really makes me want to get back into it.

Congrats..

sweet. my first pheasant hunt got me hooked... i ended up buying a german shorthairs pointer!

haha that's awesome!! I wish I had a bird dog because I plan on hitting the stocked field's across the state once it opens!! Do you still hunt pheasants? where do you usually go?

Preserves are controlled by the Dec though you aren't required to hold a license, Sept 1 is the opener and it typically goes until March 31 but can be extended to April 15th.

Although any I have been too requires that you had the hunters safety course or held a license at one time. I am sure that is insurance driven.

i see you live in LI. Like 3 years ago my wife got me a pheasant hunting trip for christmas (catskill pheasantry....awesome fyi).  We were living in queens at the time.  Me and my buddy went and i was hooked.  I promised myself that when i move out of the city and get a house I'm was gonna buy a dog.  So fast forward 3 years and a son, BOOM bought a house and got me a GSP.  Dog is a little over 1 now.  I love it.  I live in Dutchess County now (make the daily commute to nyc everyday), so I hunt the local stocked land around the area.  I did some rabbit hunting with him last year and plan to do it again, plus go for grouse this year too.

They stock in LI too.  how is it?  does it get hammered?  I was thinking of doing a trip to LI with my cuz who is in queens as well.

Nice!! i would love to move off the island!! Dutchess isnt too far from me at all. yeh I heard catskill pheasantry is awsome I may book a hunt there soon. I havnt tried any of the DEC stocked field's yet but I plan on hitting alot of them this season. Here's a list of the stocked release sites in NY. Would be easier with a dog if you wanna team up for some pheasant hunts!! Any excuse to get myself off the island! Would love to get in some rabbit and grouse hunting also!!
