My buddy loves them!  He cuts them down after a hard freeze and hangs them in his basement.

Funny this should come up tonight here.......I was at his place today and saw a huge nest on the side of his purple martin house today, it was gorgeous.  I meant to snap a couple pics but forgot, maybe next time I go down.

They're bald faced hornets. The past few years they've made nests in our lilac tree next to the house. I would typically torch it or shoot it. This year they apparently wizened up and built them in the woods so I left them. I was going to wait for the cold weather to remove them.

Does anybody have a use for any of these? I have 3 of them on my property. I've seen people with them in their dens or man cave for decoration. I'd like to put one in my man cave but the wife has forbid me from it.

Forbid????? Did you use the word "Forbid"?

I was told by my neighbor that when you find them high off the ground that its going to be a cold snowy winter,,

anybody got any feedback on that or was he just pulling my chain?

this might have some truth to it, the one I found last fall freshly abandoned was about 14 feet off the ground and we did have a snowy winter.

That reminds me of this. These little guys were flying into my tree stand one evening scraping the soft wood off and carrying it away.  I sat and watched. Not the least bit aggressive, LOL.

They are not in the least aggressive when they are AWAY from the nest...If they are feeding around you, you can swat at them, shoo them away or whatever..They will not sting unless you put your hand on them.

But get close to thier nest and make a disturbance that they feel is threatening, and LOOK OUT !!

Nasty SOBs !!!

In my area, they have always been called white faced hornets, except by one old boy I used to work with at a pallet factory..He called them white ASSED hornets.

When I was in HS I threw a perfect spiral with a Nerf football into one of those. Found out white faced hornets can fly faster than I could run . And that after diving into neighbors pool that they'd wait for me to pop back up. Hey, I never claimed I was bright

Hehehehe...A buddy of mine and I learned the same thing when we were kids and decided that the hornets nest was a good target for our Daisy BB guns.. We didn't have a pool to dive into, though...
