Cross Bow Regulation Clarification

ok, i know this has been hashed and rehashed, so be patient here.

I am utterly confused on the tag you use for Crossbow hunting.  I am totally against it, but my father (who is 75 and can't draw a regular bow is looking into it) might get one.

1) From what I understand, you do not need a bow liscense or certification to use / hunt with it.

2) For us in WNY, it is the last 2 weeks of bow season it can be used (and then also the entire gun season).

3) Even though you are hunting the bow season....with technically a bow, you use your Gun tag?  Would that be your regular season rifle tag?  or your muzzloader tag (because i have heard both)? or is there a special "stamp" you need to get?.

4) In addition to #3, so, you shoot a buck on November 10th for example with your crossbow, you use your gun tag......then you don't have a gun tag?  Or is it an ADDITIONAL tag to hunt with the cross bow.

Please don't post your opinion if you aren't 100% sure.  I need layman facts (I don't want to deal with the idiot DEC people).

Sorry to have this topic pop up again, but this is just utterly ridiculous on behalf of our state and i am confused to say the least.

Thank you in adance!

no. to hunt the last two weeks of bow with a crossbow you need to buy a muzzleloader license. Your regular season tag can be used to hunt with a crossbow during regular season and you need a ML license to hunt the special late season with a crossbow (but if you still have your regular season tag it can be used in the late special season to ta either sex. )

you need to do the online certification course and have the certificate with you to hunt with a cross bow.

ok if you have complete everything you will have 2 tags for bow/muz 1 reagular season and what ever DMPs you aquired  the last two weeks of early bow you may use the XBOW but have to use either your bow/muz tags or dmp tags once reagular season starts you must only use your reagular season and DMPs and all tags are good for the late season reguardless it its muz or bow or xbow hopwe that helps clear it up

Clarification. You only have an either sex and an antler less for that early season if you but bow and muzzleloader licenses. If you only buy one ( and you need the muzzleloader to hunt with crossbow in that two week early season) you only get an either sex tag

this is as clear as mud...lol.

Let me get this straight.  I will use me for an example.

I have a bow liscense, rifle liscense and a muzzleloader liscense.

Without getting any doe permits or special use permits, I essentially can shoot 2 antlered deer:  1 during early season bow or late season muzzloader / bow and 1 during rifle.

Lets say I shot a deer with my regular bow early season (opening day for arguments).  That tag is filled.

I now have 1 antlered tag left, my rifle season tag.

If I use my crossbow during the early season bow hunt (those last 2 weeks), I would then use my rifle tag?

And if i shot a deer then, I am done for the entire season?  Is that correct?  Or are you not allowed to hunt with the cross bow for an antlered deer if you filled your tag in early bow with your bow?

I HATE NYS!

Crossbows may  be used to take deer or bear during limited portions of bowhunting seasons as follows, provided that the hunter possesses the muzzleloading privilege:

  • During the last 14 days of the early bowhunting season in the
    Southern Zone (i.e., November 1–14, 2014

Regular firearms seasons using a Regular Big Game tag, DMPs, or DMAP tags

  •  late muzzleloader season in the Southern Zone using Bow/Muzz tags, DMPs, DMAP tags, or an unfilled Regular Big Game tag (late season only);

If I use my crossbow during the early season bow hunt (those last 2 weeks), I would then use my rifle tag?   NO, you would use your antlerless  muzzleloader tag, you cannot take an antler deer since you already took one in early bow . ( you filled your either sex bow/muz privilage)

However you can again take antlers in reg gun season with the xbow using you reg. season license.

Also, if you do not take an antler deer during the Reg gun season, you can take an antler deer in the late bow/muz  with the reg season license.

So,,,since you took an antler during early bow,  you cannot take another antler, until either reg gun season, or late bow/muz  season WITH a Reg season unfilled tag, if you dont get one during reg season. Any way you look at it  max of 2 antler.

Let me get this straight.  I will use me for an example.

I have a bow liscense, rifle license (REGULAR SEASON) and a muzzleloader license. (3 TAGS- BOW ML EITHER SEX-BOW MUZZLELOADER ANTLERLESS ONLY- REGULAR SEASON)

Without getting any doe permits or special use permits, I essentially can shoot 2 antlered deer:  1 during early season bow or late season muzzloader / bow and 1 during rifle(REGULAR SEASON).

Lets say I shot a deer with my regular bow early season (opening day for arguments).  That tag is filled(IF IT IS A BUCK THE EITHER SEX TAG IS USED, IF A DOE THE ANTLERLESS IS USED. OR YOU COULD SHOOT TWO DOES BUT LET'S SAY IT WAS A BUCK AND YOU FILLED YOU EITHER SEX BOW/M L TAG).

If I use my crossbow during the early season bow hunt (those last 2 weeks), I would then use my rifle tag?(NO- YOU COULD ONLY SHOOT A DOE BECASUE YOU ONLY HAVE YOUR ANTLERLESS ONLY BOW/ML TAG LEFT)

And if i shot a deer then, I am done for the entire season?  Is that correct?  Or are you not allowed to hunt with the cross bow for an antlered deer if you filled your tag in early bow with your bow?(YOU RGULAR SEASON TAG ONLY CAN BE USED DURING THE REGULAR SEASON AND IF NOT FILLED, DURING THE LATE SPECIAL SEASON, IT CAN BE USED FOR EITHER SEX THEN. THIS APPLIES TO THE GENERAL REGULATIONS IN THE SOUTHERN ZONE, NOT AREAS WITH SPECIAL REGULATIONS. )

  • 3 weeks later...

Don't mean to steal this thread and this is a archery question. but there seams to be some good info from members on here. I live in archery only(8c). can I use my regular tag before gun season? The way I understand it , I can use both during regular season(only in 8c)It would seem fitting to be able to use both during archery.

Question, is a crossbow considered archery or muzzleloader in NY ? The reason I'm asking is that there are archery only sections of public land I want to hunt. Would be a blessing during rifle season not to have to share the woods with the pumpkin army as I'm a ground blind hunter.

I don't have an answer for you, but let me give it a try:

A crossbow is, by any conceivable description or definition an archery implement, yet there is no archery training or certification required. You are, however, required to sign a form that you print from the DEC's internet website attesting to the fact that you have read their rules and suggestions and are capable of using the implement. You are required to carry this signed propusk (russian term for regulatory form) whenever you are using the implement.

You cannot use the archery implement during archery season, except for the last two weeks of that season, during which time you must have a valid muzzle-loader permit in order to use the archery implement during the portion of the archery season which has been designated for crossbow use.

I hope this is getting clearer. :sorry:

Tagging a kill made with a crossbow will be the same as any other archery implement: early season archery (last two weeks only), regular season gun, or late season archery/muzzleloader, except that any kill made with a crossbow must be made while in possession of a valid muzzleloader permit but may be used when the muzzleloader tag is not valid.

The people who think this stuff up seriously need to find something else to do.

Sorry CvaBob, I don't have an answer to your question. Thanks for letting me rant a bit.
