damn deer farms

Wild deer and captive deer still interact, touching noses through a fence is one way.

CWD was first found in a captive mule deer herd in the 60's. There is speculation that it may have been around in wild herd for years before that, but there is no proof. It is believed that it may have been derived from "scrapie". A similar disease that affects sheep that has been around for hundreds of years. Back in the day, sheep were allowed to free range. Or someone who farmed mule deer also farmed sheep and they interacted. Reading on how disease usually stems from poor farming practices, it makes sense that it originated on a farm. Of course people from both sides will point fingers, but I like to use my own judgement.

its the future, Like it or Not.

Uhhh yeah Okay, How many Free Range hunters are there and how many High Fence Killers are out there?  You honestly think anyone other than the very wealthy wanabes hunters who cat hunt and need a freak buck put in there face to hang on the wall to brag to there buddies how they killed this massive buck is the future of hunting?  I have no problem with Deer Farms or the people who want to pay for a deer cause they dont know how to hunt or dont want to put any effort into hunting a free range deer, but I do have a problem with the way some deer farmers are trying to promote there business by putting a black mark and spewing crap about free range hunting, free range animals and the purity of the sport.  All it does is put a black mark on the Deer Farms and doesnt go over well at all.  The best way to explain the way these guys come across is like the campain commercials on TV bashing there opponent with some desperate attempt to make the "other" guy look stupid when all it does is make the one who paid for the add look like a complete arse.

Who cares if people hunt on a farm and brag about what they shot, and spend their own money that way. It's helping that deer farm make money to keep it going. Everything helps the economy when money moves. Same as when family's go to zoos to look through a fence and wild animals.

Wonder how many people who complain about those farms buy and use deer lure scents.

The problem is when they don't disclose that it was a canned hunt. And the word "hunt" is hard to use.

I can show you many that are far from canned. That word is a joke and used by the people that just dont like it so they try and make it sound unsporting. Who cares what a person says about their hunts?  How many people do you think lie and stretch all kinds of truths when it comes to taking whitetails?

This statement is wrong in many ways. Ny state high fence hunts are 130 to 150 inch bucks for average hunters. People are sick of not seeing any good deer and they have been to the high dollar outfitters that charge them 3 grand plus for a chance at a good buck and then that buck had better meet their 130 min inches before you can kill it. People go to a nice ranch, spend the same money and come home with a great animal. As far as purity goes the people that hate hunting hate all hunting regardless of where it takes place. I could never figure how it is anybody else's business how or where another person spends their time. The disease card is far from being proven. When they ban deer urine because they THINK it spreads CWD when in fact they cant even find the prion in the urine of a proven positive whitetail. But they have found the prion in Alfalfa and corn yet they still harvest those crops and put those crops out into the animal industry for all animals to eat. Even in proven hot zones of CWD positive grounds of Wisconsin! Yeah like that wont spread  CWD  around the country!!!

Any regret you experience will be related to the fact that a lot of naysayers here don't like facts, but do like to hear the tinkling of their own ill conceived and generally ignorant opinions, based usually on nothing but the perceived (deluded) superiority of their own sluggish thought processes .

I don't think I am superior to anyone! I have never hunted a farm! Never will! I don't have all the facts! That's why I asked! There was no need to insult me dude!

LMFAO people are sick of not seeing any good deer! That is your response to me?  Again I ask what are the numbers on "these people" and the numbers of free range hunters?  Sorry paying to hunt a high fenced deer is not the way of the future as you state. Like I said and you just backed it up its the way of the wealthy who do not want to spend the time in the woods to get a "good" free range deer.  Take a look at the NY Big Buck Club, how about P&Y and B&C, yep there are not any good deer outside a high fence.  I said already I dont have a problem with guys who feel the need to spend there money on pen raised hunting, it is just wrong for these farmers to push there agenda by putting a black mark on wild free range deer and the people who hunt them.  A bit arrogant.  It was asked in past post by others for reference to these prion statements and the death of hunting as we all know it but yet we still havent seen these so called "facts".  If I recall it was one persons opinion in one article but I could be wrong, each reply pretty much has been something along the lines of Im ot going to do the research for you look it up.

Thats what he does JustRob, he loves to base his FACTS from PrisonPlanet, a known conspiracy theory website.  Most everyone just ignores him.

Your in danger of making sense and introducing cold hard facts into this emotive debate. Reality does not sit well with many folk round here I am discovering. Just ask Belo. He gets paid to be dumb fat and stoopid on many issues it seems. He told us so.

Honestly how can you expect anyone to even consider you as an intelligant individual when all you do is ridicule fellow hunters?

Anyone else reminded by the overuse of exclamation marks of that Seinfeld episode?

Also, you can tell the October lull is in full effect on huntingny- the new guys are getting bashed, the regulars are getting offended and it's the same argument about fenced deer and farms. It's time to reopen a thread on AR while I go pop some corn. More time in the field is needed and I could use some fresh entertainment. :)

Well lets put it this way then..There are enough people in Ny state that hunt behind fence,on ranches, to wipe out the inventory of over 300 farms to the point that there is not an antlered buck to be found. Every state that has high fence ranches never have enough to supply the demand. Farmers in Ny state make upwards of 50 grand a year selling their stock to ranches. I dont really care if you like it or not and this agenda you say farms push is called business. The people decide if a business survives or not and i can promise you that fences are going up, not coming down!  You come onto a post about CWD with no knowledge of the disease and spew your thoughts about high fence hunting. You just prove the facts that most people are catching on to and that is that CWD is only being used by guys like you to push their agenda that they dont like high fence hunting!  When you get some knowledge of the post at hand then feel free to come back and speak about it. Until then...We all get your point that you dont like high fence hunting..We get it....

Wow Dude, brush up on your reading comprehension.  Papist was trying to tell you it's the other guys on here that will make you regret asking because some don't like facts.

His post wasn't supposed to be an insult to you.  It was aimed at others.  Besides, offense cannot be given, only taken.  Don't take offense without understanding the post first.

OK. I have to ask.......I know I will regret it, but, I have to.

Didn't this start outside the fence? So why put the hammer on farms? Why blame it all on them?

Because some feel that they think its n their rights to tell someone else how and where to spend their time. They dont like it so they will lie, cheat and steal to get their point across to anyone that may listen.

Cwd is the same prion found in scrapie in sheep. Same disease, different animal...You let 100 sheep get scrapie's and die you will hear nothing....Now let that same prion kill a couple deer here and there and its front page newz...I like to call it the Bambi Syndrome!

These same people that bitch about people killing deer behind fence are the first ones to go on a boar hunt behind wire but call that Ok because it was for the freezer. Yeah Whatever!!!!!

Please go point out where I stated I dont like high fence hunting?  How many times do I need to say I dont have no problem with people who hunt penned deer.  Quit reading between the lines and reading on the defense.  If yo do that you may see what Im saying.  Again and again you say FACTS but yet we see no Facts other than you saying it.  Now you are questioning my knowledge when you have ZERO knowledge of what I do know.  Now tell me how many deer are killed on these 300 farms in NY?  Now how many are killed in free range in NY.  Now tell me honestly you really think the future of hunting is behind a fence?  I think not and this was your statement and this is why this debate started and was steered away from CWD.

First thing you need to do is learn what high fence is all about...Ya see, first there are farms and they raise the animals that get sold to high fence ranches that have large numbers of acres behind fence, thats where the hunting comes in. You do not hunt on a farm.

How old are you? 20 something?  If you have not been around long enough to see where hunting was and where it is then you will never get it. DEC ruining the herds, land..What little bit of good land left..will be ate up in high dollar leases and hunter numbers going down the tubes. Whats that leave you?  an older group of hunters the will refuse to shoot the one and only spike buck on that state land if he can get it before all the others on there and will chose to either pay big money for a lease or go on high fence hunts and i can show you numbers proving just how much high fence has grown in Ny alone in the last 5 years. The trend will continue.

Every single remark you make about deer farms and those who hunt them is derogatory.  Say it as many times as you like, but the way you say it proves you do have a problem with them.

I have never hunted a deer farm, or a high fence operation, or even with a guide, but I do not judge those that do.  Hunting is a leisure activity.  How a man chooses to spend his free time is not for me to judge.

If a man wants to spend his earnings shooting a BIG deer inside a fence, that's his business.  It's legal and available.  Some people don't have all the time in the world to chase free range deer to the point of it becoming an unhealthy obsession.   Some guys spend more money, and give up more income, chasing wild deer without success, than those who pay to shoot one behind a fence.

Does that make one hunter better than the other?  To those who seek trophies on their own to build their egos, it does.  To those who look at it pragmatically, it doesn't.

Regardless of which side you favor, passing judgement on others is best left to the almighty.

Come on man you are out on a limb with this one.  You do know there is 4,756,640 acres of state forest,WMA and Easements in NY right?  Not to mention the acres of land owned by hunters.  Yes we all know hunting leases are common place this day and age to hunters who do not own there own land.  I would take a guess most hunters enjoy spending more than one day hunting in NY, and it would be my guess this is why these non land owning hunters grab up these leases when they are available, and it would be my guess that a one year lease on a lot of these acres are far cheaper than a one day hunt behind a fence.  What you dont mention is the way of our youth and there immediate desire for sastisfaction without the hard work. That right there would be more justified than statements of the DEC ruining deer herds and  what little bit of good land there is left.  Promote the hell out of your business, just dont spin the heck out of reality in free range deer hunting.

Free range hunting more often pays off because of luck, than hard work.  Perhaps a hunter just has access to a better hunting spot than most others, or has better friends.  Shooting a big buck in the wild doesn't require skill if you get lucky, as many average hunters have.  Heck Milo Hanson shot the world record whitetail and is making millions because he did.  But if you know the story, it was pure luck.

Sometimes it's better to avoid working hard, and just work smarter.
