Hog Hunting near San Antonio

I'll be in San Antonio in March and looking for an outfitter for hog/javelina hunting.

During the summer, my friend's brother told me not to book an outfitter as their cousin has a ranch and hog hunts all the time.  Just yesterday he tells me things are not going well between them and this cousin so I should start considering alternate arraignments.

Figure I ask just in case but have any one here hunted hogs near San Antonio that has an outfitter that they would recommend?

I'm thinking of either one of these two so far but I've only really now started looking.

I will be watching this.I have a friend that lives within a few hours drive and I will be visiting him in 2016 and I might as well kill some stuff when I am there!!LOL

That's my same thought process. I'll be down there for a wedding in March. Decided on hogs and javelinas due to a combination of it being affordable and something different that NYS game.

I can't help with your specific request, but I've found, booked, and gone on a couple successful hunts in Texas by looking on the Texas hunting forum. Just go to the outfitters section, describe what you're looking for, and you should get a few responses from guys competing for your business.

  • 3 months later...

So I spoke with South Texas Hunting Outfitters and eventually came to an agreement.  They told me that I would have to hunt with another group of hunters since it's a two hunter minimum even though it was never specified on the website.  I told them I'm okay with it if the other group is okay with me staying with them.  He told me it was settled then and I mailed in my deposit which was eventually cashed.  I was sent a packet and instructed to get a hold of them a week before my hunt for instructions since there is no address, etc.

A week before the hunt, I emailed them.  No response.  I called, got voicemail, left a message, no response.  Did this for 4 straight days.  At this point, I'm under the impression I've been had and need to find a plan B but eventually I received a call back the day before my flight and they were very apologetic.  They told me I need to contact the guide before the hunt so we can meet up.

My hunt was suppose to be Sunday evening, all day Monday, and Tuesday morning.  Saturday morning I called the guide, no pick-up, left a message, never got a call back.  Sunday morning, called him again and he finally picked up.  Told me to meet him at a post office in some small town an hour from San Antonio.

I dropped my wife off at the airport and drove to this post office and waited.  Guy never showed up.  So I called him again and he now instructs me to drive down the road and look for a gate.  Eventually I get there and it's the guys farm and check in, pay my remaining balance, and the guide goes back to watching TV.  There were other hunters there and they all have this sour look on their faces.  After a long wait, I approach the guide and ask him where should I unload my stuff and he told me to leave everything in the car since I'm about to head to another camp.  I assumed that we simply met up at the guide home but will be hunting some where else.

We drove another 2 hours to another camp and was instructed to meet Shyler Farley.  Shyler told us that he had no idea we were coming but only an hour ago and was completely caught off guard.  That's when I spoke with the other hunters and found out that they were treated just as poorly as I was.  In fact more since they arrived a day before me.  Told me that the farm they was at was completely filthy, unlivable, they were not tended to, and they didn't see a single hog.  They threw such a fit and that's why they sent them to Shyler instead.  Turns out, South Texas Hunting Outfitters is nothing more than simply an agent or pimp if you will.  Shyler even told us that while he has corresponded with STHO via phone and email, he has never actually met them and they've never actually been to his ranch.  How the heck does STHO make promises to customers when they haven't even actually seen the ranches they're sending customers to?

All the driving around made us lose out on Sunday night hunt.  Shyler is a class act and really went out of his way to make the most of what was left of our hunt.  He was simply dealt a bad hand because he had absolutely no time to prepare for our arrival.  No bait was laid out.  It also didn't help that they had 4" of rain two days before which eliminated the watering holes which he said were guaranteed to normally have pigs but now there is water every where. In the end, I had two different species of deer come in, turkeys, grouse, rabbits, but no pigs.  Most of the other hunters  had pigs come in but they were hunting with long bows and didn't have much of a shot.  One guy did take a small pig.

In the end, even though I came home empty handed, Shyler really treated me well and my time under his watch was very enjoyable.  Met a bunch of really nice hunters and Texas Hill Country was beautiful.  If I ever go back to South Texas to hunt again, I'll just go straight to Shyler.

Boned............on a guided hunt?  Say it ain't so.

Glad it was "only" $350 but in all reality, it has NOTHING to do with the money.  It's the damn inconvenience and mind games that these scumbags play.

Hopefully your guide Shyler gets you a good hunt someday.

Exactly. If they would have simply said they could not deliver, I would have gone done where else and paid more if need be.

Sorry you had a bad experience, Elmo..

It sucks to get all excited, anticipating a good hunt, and then being disappointed like that..

I have had 2 or 3 hunts that were less than I had expected, but never one that was as bad as that one.
