hunter fitness

I don't know how to set up surveys so I'll just ask here or perhaps someone could set one up...To ask how many would like to see a hunter fitness  catagory...It would still be a hunting related thing..... ppl posting ideas, types of execise for different types of hunting.... progress...ect,ect...It would be a cabin fever type board to use in off season or bad weather.... ppls hunting down times...just a thought

Being in the fence/working on fence no exercise needed/push pull dig hole's carry alot of supply's to the fence line.When I am at home or my time off and cant do much outdoor's I work on cooking and putting my cookbook together.

Other than the snow removal that works alot/takes alot of work I do mostly situp's and sit down's.in the summer months I have a sled filled with sand to drag across the yard to keep my leg's in pulling power.

Fencing..that's how I tore my ACL...I cut my own post so I do know what a work out that is...Shoveling this year has bulked my arms a tad

I like really like the sled idea...That was the second weight machine they put me on at OR..I am now pulling 210 pounds.

What have you guys that travel to hunt do to get in shape...Africa...western mountains...Canada...

I use to go 3 to 4 times a week.  I run (treadmill, elliptical, or outdoors if weather is nice) for an hour and then maybe I'll hit some weights.  Ever since mini-me showed up, I have not done anything.  I even blew out my back once bending over the crib trying to comfort him.  I just went back to the gym again this week.  My wife and I rotate.  After work, I'll head straight home while she goes to the gym one day then the next, she'll head straight home while I go to the gym.

 

In the past, for hunting, I'll do some cable pulls where I modify slightly to stimulate drawing a bow to help prepare for the season.  (Picture below is of a normal cable pull.  The machine I use, I can raise the anchor up to my should height and then I pull back and bend my elbow as if I'm drawing a bow.)

Any ideas on usual pricing on trees. It's a bit of a drive from Utica, would have to be a good deal to go

I do the cable pull but the reverse of that Elmo...I start high and pull down across my chest..at 35 #'s right now...40#'s curls,50#s pull downs's, 60 # rowing,120# on the ab/back machine, 210 #'s walking sled and on the other sled 80#'s for the bad knee and 100#'s on the other, 50#s on leg extentions and 60#'s pulling down on that...Still 80#'s on the hip/thigh machine...then 45# on the bench lift...plus leg lifts with 4# weights 5# back arm extentions 8.5 miles on the bike and .5 on elliptical and 2 miles on the tread mill (10.5 miles total will go to 11 miles next week...plus all stretches and balancing and bridges.. Every thing is 10 reps 3x's......3 1/2 hours every other day. then off days the elliptical 1 mile and or shoveling ...hiking...I've lost a whopping 4#'s ...so I won't get on the scales any more...lol

DANG...just realized...That is 11 miles already duh...lol

Rowing Machine is one of the best workouts for bowhunting imo.

 

I try to put on miles of scouting and walking post winter-pre green up. Like everyone else, not enough hours in the day outside of actual work.

I do moderate resistance training (bench, curls, abs) 1/2 hr on Monday, Wed, Fri Mornings, and 20 minutes on rowing machine + abs on Tuesday, Thursday mornings before work.   Also do 1/2 hour of cardio (bike or treadmill) + crunches (250) each weekday evening.   That hour or so a day is well worth it when hunting season comes around.  I substitute real work like hauling or splitting firewood, or outside biking, snow-shoeing, skating, skiing, etc, whenever possible and always on weekends.   I change up the routines slightly on a monthly basis to avoid the "plateau" effect.  Something simple like switching from incline to decline bench presses/pushups, or grip position on dumbels/barbells or rowing machine is all it takes.  I also keep an old low-letoff, high poundage compound bow in the basement that I start drawing as part of my morning routines, starting around April, thru the end of archery season.  I draw it left and right equally, although I only shoot right.   Keeping in shape definitely makes hunting easier and more enjoyable, especially in the mountains.   Your legs should get the most attention if you want to make hill-climbing easier.  Once you get your legs into shape, you can ditch the ATV with no problem, and go places you cant even think of with one of them.  I am in better shape at 50 than I was at 25.

I work for a living in custom home building, so active during the day.

My other outdoor hobbies include hiking year round, and backpacking so that adds some extra workout.

I have a trail close by with 900' elevation gain in 8/10 of a mile, time on that will tell me where I'm at. Also have a county park with several miles of woods trails right in my front yard, so gets the dog moving too and off the couch.

I have a New Zealand mountain hunt in May/June, so I'll start pushing my pace and carrying a medium pack. I hike with trekking poles and that helps with arms and torso some.

I'm naturally lean and don't gain weight; but I eat well for the most part, don't smoke, drink alcohol and caffeine in very limited moderation.

Have tentative plans for a 2016 hunt at altitude of 12-14000' that has me a bit concerned; thinking of plans for a real schedual for fitness for the first time as I get older(turning 50 this year). That will be the last hunt I need to list all 6 huntable continents as a personal goal.

Lol that's nothing...the drive will be my exercise tomorrow....plus seeing if I can cut a trail down hill and grab a camera. I've always been active and do heavy type work..but thank heavens for the gym this year...I would have been house bound ...save the drive, thanks to this snow.
