Nonresident hunting in ny with 30 cal ar

Could have figured that this thread would turn into a debate over AR's being suitable for hunting.  LOL

I for one will stick with my bolt actions.  To me that's what a big game rifle is supposed to look like.  And yes, I have killed 3 deer one after the other with it, so multiple deer can surely be taken with one.  Most especially in a state like NY I'd never even consider hunting with an AR.  You get stopped by a state trooper or DEC officer and then all of a sudden they get more interested in whether your rifle is in violation of the SAFE act than they are whether you violated any game laws.  That there is enough of a reason for me to stick with a bolt action or other more common hunting arm where there will be no room for anyone to bust my balls over the type of gun I have in my possession.  If any of the rest of you are fine with potentially being given this extra special treatment by law enforcement, then knock yourselves out hunting with them!

In my view an AR is no different than hunting with any of the auto loaders that have been carried in the deer woods for decades. Our fine state officials have thrown a monkey wrench into the prospect of owning one for me and I wouldn't carry it with so many gray areas in the law and enforcements understanding of it. I agree with you, not worth the butt ache at this point.

Belo, I own a ruger m77 30-06 hunted with it for 15 yrs accurate gun took many deer with it. in 1998 got picked for moose hunt here dropped nice bull moose with it. But with the we hunt it was a handicap.Purchased a rem model 742 woodmaster auto loader 30-06 turned out to be a jammaster. Then moved on to ar's. Mine shoots and functions flawlessly. Most accurate rifle I've ever owned.

Heres my project

Its completely different, but I guess you just feel the need to play pariah again.

the site's been a little slow lately huh? Maybe we should talk more about hillary clinton and isis? God forbid we have a healthy debate on the ARs place in the hunting world. That has NOTHING to do with the site's focus.

That is exactly what I don't get. How can anyone debate if a specific semi auto rifle has a place in the hunting world? You may be able to make a case based on personal beliefs that semi's in general shouldn't be there but it is tied to the black gun stigma and fear to say the AR alone doesn't. It operates the same way and uses the same rounds.

Culver, we're having a battle of wits with a unarmed man.

Yes you're clearly superior in the intelligence department. Your grammar and punctuation have proven that.

Continue to attack a fellow NRA member. Infighting should do our cause well.

I have seen nothing but long guns on this site, until I see ARs become the rage among hunters, i will continue to believe the bolt action rifle is superior.

Btw, back to your original question. Bring your AR to NY. Let us know how it goes.

By "its place" I meant where it ranks as far as preference and efficiency. Not that it isn't allowed. I never once said that.

You said about everything just short of it. Dance all you want you intentions were clear.

Believe what you want. The gun is essentially illegal in NY and I don't remember to many pics on this site where guys were using them, including you. The guy explained why he wanted to use one and that was the end of it, until you decided I was part of the anti-gun movement

ohh more horror, another one with the buck it killed and the damage it did( this is in 5.56) as you can see, the ar platform is entirely incapable of taking deer...........stunning that these guns operate on a 100 year old technology, yet some people are afraid of them

What does any of that have to do with you misinterpreting what someone said?

Not anti gun. Just ignorant of guns. The gun isn't illegal. Just some features on it are. Just as if you added those features to any other removable magazine fed semi automatic. Oh. But the dreaded Belo qualifier. Essentially.

I'm not ignorant. It's fact. More hunters in the USA hunt with a "traditional" bolt action rifle. So, yes I don't "get it".

If you have a budget for 1 gun then the AR is probably your best choice for all around use. Hands down. If you sold a gold bolt action .30-06 for one to hunt, it does seem interesting to me.

I don't picture a guy in a treestand with an AR. Doesn't make it wrong.Yes it's different. Yes it seems odd to me that a combat rifle would be used to go hunting. Yes I am a little worried that hunters walking through the woods in most states with 30 round mags might not help our 2nd amendment rights. Hunting is a big reason why we still have guns.

Yes I have come within minutes of buying a colt down here in MS. Yes, I want one. Yes I can rent them at the local range and have had a blast shooting them. No I would most likely never take it into the deer woods. My pump action and pistols in my nightstand GV are my home defense, so in the end I couldn't justify buying one.

is that what you wanted to hear? I thought yours fell into a lake anyhow?

Who are you arguing with? I never made that claim. Hope you registered it

Beingthat the ar is the most popular long gun in America used for hunting every where not surprised I found a couple people here on belos bolt action forum using them. What 556 pills u using for deer water weasel.

you can find a couple of anything if you look at a large enough group.

There's no doubt that AR's fall short of what some may consider classic "deer rifles", and I'm fairly certain that is based purely on looks alone...I know it is for me, I have no desire to own or hunt with one because I think they are just not good looking guns, that being said, it doesn't bother me in the least bit if that's what someone else is attracted to and chooses to carry that type of gun afield...........I bet the guys who rolled into camp with the first automatic rifles way back when, got some pretty odd looks and comments directed at them.
