Live from the turkey woods...

Called in a huge Tom from a good 200 yds away and he hung up about 60 yds to our left out of view. He sat there for a good 30 mins and then headed into the woods behind us. Then a Jake pops out about 60 yds and heads the other way. Nothing else since then.

Didn't hear a thing for first hour so I got up and walked up and along top a ridge, calling every few minutes. Walked into a dozen hens, didn't see them until I was 10 yds away, they were silent. Called there for a while and nothing. Got bored and started looking for sheds. Found no sheds. Had a nice walk though.

Got out a bit too late. Cat woke me up about 6:15. The Turkey were gobbling but henned up in the top field already. No getting them to cross the property line and back into my woods at this point. Came back for coffee. Will hit the woods early tomorrow. I think the warm morning shut down the gobbling early today as well. That , or the few birds around are already taken. Did hear 1 shot.

Took a friend, located a gobbler with an owl call, and got set up inside of 80 yards. The bird was fired up on the limb, we didn't hear any hens and he probably gobbled 100 times if not more after just a few tree yelps. A little past legal shooting time I used my hat to do a flydown and then gave a few louder clucks and yelps. About twenty minutes later he pitched off the limb with his hens (turns out they were there all along), and landed thirty yards in front of us. My friend promptly missed him clean. Sigh. He's only got a couple gobblers under his belt, both taken with me, and I think all the gobbling shook him up.

Just got back to car. Birds ripped on roost followed by silence. 8:15 I had a hen cutting 100 yards away and a gobbler fired up 250 out. She was between us. I tried soft calling her in so he'd follow up this hill. Both went silent

Upon last 100 yards out of woods I put up two toms and a hen to wing not more than 20 yards away. I was crossing creek they flew over. Go figure, never saw birds there. Guessing they were there for water. They only flew 200 yards but daughter has ballet competition soon. Have only heard one distant shot in 3 days.

had another great morning Sunday...today I gave them a break and hit the gym...just fed and watered chickens...it looks like they have returned to that area...woods all scratched up...I need to be hunting water...the woods are bone dry ...I mean BONE dry...that's not good at all this time of year...Ya we need a warm dry spring but not too dry and yes...humidity is important to egg survival...Too much either way can effect hatches

In 3M, heard lots of shots in the woods to my east and lots of people calling on Sat.

Owls calls until 9:30 or so.

Tried stirring things up wth a pheasant alarm call - nothing.  Had a crow hanging around me calling every so often, so it was pointless to try using my crow call. To bad crow season was closed, he was sitting 4 trees down from me most of the morning.

Sunday was pretty quiet, heard 1-2 shots other than when the Police started up practice at the their range a few miles away.  Less cars/trucks parked by the gates and parking lots than expected.

Places that are usually mushy in the Spring were dry here too.

Almost no dew on my boots from walking in on Sat. and Sun., very unusual.

May have to head closer to the swamps and away from the open fields.  Although the guy that was by the swamp closest to me never took a shot either and guess he saw no birds since I called him up over two slopes a good 1/3 - 1/2 mile away.  You get a good work out coming up those two slopes.

Got a few looks coming out of the woods when the bikers (MC clubs) rode by.  Knife on hip, gun in hand wearing full camo, waist-pack with shoulder harness, etc.  Probably not what they expected to see on a Sunday in May.

Hour drive thru hills and thick fog sucked. Missed crucial turn, had to put gps on. Made this drive hundreds of times. Check

Found new hole in boot in trout stream ... Cold. Check

Stick to eye , check

Sweated my butt off mile up mountain , check

Wouldn't give this up for the world, priceless

Birds ripping on other mountain, nothing close yet.

IMO Sleeping in would be waste of the morning. I'm listening to the woods wake up. Not my neighbor leaving for work , hearing the paperboy, etc
