Nice day to be sitting in the woods with my daughter. Gobbles mile away on other mountain. Nothing close yet. Grinners took a beating on the road last night. Saw very new born fawn and mama. Daughter loved it. Wobbly legged little thing. Enjoy the woods this morning folks

It almost worked. I set up at the very tip of the peninsula, facing the field. Gave some soft clucks and a few quiet yelps. Nothing..I waited 5 minutes or so and called again. He sounded off to my right. a minute or so later the real clucks and yelps started…Damn! He flew down and landed just out of range, followed by 4 or 5 hens .He's a nice big tom. They wanted nothing to do with my calls so I just shut up and hoped for the best. No such luck. They slowly made there way to the far corner of the field, right past the spot I set up at a few days ago LOL!! Then 2 more birds joined them from across the opposite field. I think they were jakes.

They eventually moved off but it was a blast to watch them scratch around and feed. A deer even joined them and was feeding right along side the birds.. A few times the big tom flapped at the little guy and the deer would make a couple bounds and go right back to feeding..I never saw that before. Funny.

Mine didn't work out either! Flopped roosts on me and only gobbled once so I couldn't really pinpoint him .... Hens were definitely on the move ! Spooked two just creepin around softly cluckin , and one dam near back at the truck that took off flying... Oh well , I should have busted him in the lip three days ago when he was gobbling at anything up until 10 o'clock n struttin his but off ! He's cooled off now , so hopefully a weeks rest will be enough to get em next weekend...

Last evening I spotted the bird from yesterday morning, he was heading up to roost in the same area that he has been with one hen close by. The problem is, the past couple of times that I've hunted him he hits the ground and goes away from the calling and up to the neighboring property and stays there gobbling instead of heading out into the planted cornfield where I see him in the afternoons. I didn't see the big boy from our late morning hunt out in the field but saw a hen headed to roost where they typically do. I decided last minute to try the later spot first. We never heard a single gobble. I drove up the road to the other spot and wouldn't you know it...there's our longbeard strutting up the cornfield all by himself at 6:15!!! I believe we will concentrate on tagging him for the rest of season now, but I don't believe he will come in to calling.

yeah….unless the tom Im after loses the hens soon, he won't come in to my calls. He will answer but not come in….Why should he? I just have to get into his fly down and travel route, which I think I have a good idea on. Like I said..it almost worked this morning, but he flew down just out of range and they all wandered off opposite of where I thought they would..Thats why hunting and shooting are two different things.

Called in two hens as 8. Got them to come 110 yards across the field so they ended up 30 yards away.

Hope to have stick and call in a Tom, but they moved off. I moved to the other end where they took a dust bath and more shade for me,

can't get pics to post. what am I missing? I see no picture symbol to click on in "reply to post"

Upload your photos to photobucket and then copy the IMG in photobucket.  You can then paste the IMG in a reply and the photo will be there.

Forgot to take pics of the hens - hindsight.

Picked up my hen decoy and some stalking. The lower field about a 1/4 mile away by the swamp had been plowed. Gotcready to try calling when a tom gobbled. Couldn't get him to come in from the woods. Circle around to the swamp and he still wouldn't budge.

A bunch teens came through the area very loud and the bird shut up and vanished. Heading back out saw odd looking rock or tree root. When got closer. Saw it was a large turtle with lots of bugs swimming around it. When to poke it with the barrel to it it was dead and snapped right onto my gun. Definitely a large live snapping turtle. Got pic of him on my camera.

Have work the rest of the week,so I know where I plan to start out on Saturday first thing.

This one really was a prick… He was either  with hens and would just blew me off, or he would just skirt me. Today  He flew down solo and was answering me but moved away. I had to do some moving around, after he went out of sight, but after I switched calls and relocated, he answered and eventually walked straight into me. About 35 yards straight on….

Congrats!!! It's quite an accomplishment to kill any bird at the stage of the game...but, it's always a great feeling to bust the skull of one that's been driving you crazy. My wife and I will be back after our "prick" bird in the morning. The game's on the line...four more days and he's in the clear...one mistake and he'll get a beak full of Heavy Weight #7's!!!
