It has to be something instilled in people as a kid (as in, having your parents put that fear in you).  You can't be born with a fear of anything really.  I like snakes.  I catch them in my yard when I find them and let me 2 boys (7 and 4 years old) hold them.  I have done this since they were little, little and now they catch them on their own.

All in education and how you react when your kids are watching.

I'm not sure I buy that. I don't really care to argue with you over it, but there has to be a little bit of genetics that come in to play.

So, you wouldn't think that since you were a little kid, that if someone in your family introduced you to a snake for example (slowly), and let you see it, possibly touch it or hold it, that over time, your fear would be unfounded and diminish?

I'm not a Dr. (although, i did stay at a Holiday Inn Express once) so I am not willing to stand firm on my assumption and argue either.  it just seems logical to me that fear is a learned reaction.  It is the same for all instances of fear.  Those afrraid of guns are probably affraid because they were never educated about them and a parent told them to be affraid (or reacted affraid). Those affraid of snakes, probably saw their parents scream, jump, run, etc.  Kids learn a lot from body language of parents, more than you realize (my wife is actually a published author and part of her subject matter address parental body language).

I don't know...again, seems more likely to me than a magic gene you are born with that predetermines you have a fear of snakes without even knowing what one is.

lets take the fear of heights for example. Some people just don't like heights and others don't mind it. I have little doubt any of us acquire this in life.

I would still respectfully disagree.  You learn to be affraid of heights.  Put a baby on a roof and does it cry?  it doesn't know the difference.  At some point as you age, you are introduced to the "fear" of things and they stick with you.  Maybe it is your parents yelling at you climbing the playground slide to be careful and not fall or you will die, maybe you did fall and got hurt, there are a lot of environmental factors that could go into a fear (even subconsciencly).

Again, not arguing, just my opinion.

I don't mind snakes at all we seem to have a bunch around the foundation every spring. We had so many last year the wife was looking up new real estate!! I got worried how much that was gonna cost me and me and my 12 year old son had to relocate about 20 of them back into the woods over a couple weeks. They sure as heck could do a better job with the moles I have tons of those dang things!

The one thing I do not like is they have a really musky smell this time of year, must have to do with breeding, but man you get that stink on your hands and I smell it for a couple days. Ick
