This logic is crazy.  Funny how after they follow the DEC's recommendation of shooting doe to help habitat or better age structure, etc.  Then they wonder why they do not see any deer on the property that had an abundance.  Shoot doe to keep the population in check but do not shoot all of them!!!  Unless you just don't want them around.

Anything over 6 does to 1 buck is not going to get you any more deer... Bucks will breed roughly 3 does per estrous cycle... anything conceived after the December rut won't make it the following winter... Not sure what NY has for a buck doe ratio... but go with those #'s on your area and see what you see... I know the farm I hunt is over that and see a lot of does without fawns every year... Some do to natural predation but others are just not bred...

.... it seems the management of game has been removed in favor of appeasing the hunters for votes in elections..

.

One of my pet peeves! It's expected the DEC should be involved with managing the NYS environment &/or lands for the enjoyment of its' residents. BUT for the DEC.to get involved in managing the wildlife in terms of hunter satisfaction is just plain dumb! Not even part of the DEC's mission statement!

Someone already hinted at this, it's our responsibility as hunters and stewards of our little parts of the world we own or hunt in to micro manage the carrying capacity and population densities of the deer. If I shot as many does as the DEC guess-timated as overpopulated and would issue DMPs to me for my county, after a couple of years there wouldn't be many around. So I micro manage the doe population for their benefit as best as I can and for my own future hunting satisfaction. Probably contrary to what the local apple farmers think, but we all can't be happy hunters!

But less deer is healthier deer and better for the herd in general..... it seems the management of game has been removed in favor of appeasing the hunters for votes in elections..

.

Actually that isn't really true. Deer populations kept in balance with their habitat is what makes for healthier deer. And of course that does not mean that they need to be whacked until sightings become scarce ..... lol. It seems that people always jump to extremes and take what the DEC is saying way past what they meant. Less deer does not mean healthier deer unless the population is so high that it is stressing the habitat. Then you want fewer deer.

And a word about the relationship of hunters and the DEC. Without hunters, the DEC has zero control over the herd. Hunters are the only herd population control that they have. So they are put in a position of not only managing deer, but managing hunters as well. The declining hunter population does neither the DEC or the deer any good. It is a good idea not to drive hunters out of the sport through excessive, needless or worthless regulation. It's a balancing act that the DEC has done pretty good at until recently.

They've been recommending passing yearly bucks for years and said gun fire in the woods does not effect deer movement (when the youth season was proposed)- they're fools and anyone that's believes them is even more foolish. It is just like pa- has to do w early successional woods and deer car collisions not your hunting. We are just mechanism to make it happen. Would bet they have their excuses aligned for the commentary in 5-10 years about no one seeing any deer already figured out.... They can't manage their own funding and every dope w license privileged thinks they'll have a plan for your resources....... Guess again
