When do you know you have coyote problem?

There are no DMP's in most of the NZ. Muzzleloader only in most areas.

But I'm done. You all kicked my ass. Because parts of the state may not have a coyote problem, then none of the state has a coyote problem.

I admitted to seeing your point of view, but you will never see ours, it's all in our heads.

Good boy.. you finally got it.

"Or, that there aren't areas where coyotes have a significant impact on deer. Those areas are marginal deer habitat anyway - due to excessive snow or closed canopy mature forests"

This statement shows why some people feel coyotes have a bigger impact on deer then others. The diets of coyotes in wooded/forested areas have a greater percentage of deer then the coyotes in agricultural areas. Combine that with the fact that there are fewer deer in these non agricultural areas to begin with and you have coyotes having a greater impact on deer populations in certain areas then others.

???? No basis in fact... might be a theory someone came up with I'm guessing. The only REAL impact on deer anywhere would be fawn kill which has more to do with fawning areas than agriculture or woods...  fawning areas would be harder for coyotes to pinpoint in the wooded areas than the agricultural areas if we're going for a theory... Lets just say that any problem with coyote vs. deer is remote and extremely isolated at best... and certainly NOT an epidemic in NY like some would suggest.

How do you coyote defenders feel about all the wild dogs running in the NY State woods?

Do you think they should be controlled or allowed to live wild?

Do you think they kill deer or not?

I don't see dogs running wild. I see dogs raiding our eagle bait sites - fat dogs, dogs with collars. They are a nuisance. Actually, my big issue with coyotes is the same. We used 145 road killed deer (a legally licensed use) last season. Keeping the other scavengers fed so we can keep sites baited and continue our eagle research is sometimes a challenge.

If the question is should we make a distinction between feral domestic dogs and wild hybrid canines, I say yes. Yes because the animals decended from coyotes and wolves are a truly natural - not man made - phenomena. The feral dogs are not. I think that the laws currently in place in NYS - coyotes treated as a game animal, domestic dogs restricted from running free in winter - are correct.

Never seen a wild dog in the woods... not sure that is at a problem level either... isolated cases are much different than an across the board problem... I would say automobiles kill more deer than either dogs or yotes.
