Herring

Nice job! Do they fight well? What do you get them on? Looks like a cool fish. How do you cook them? I love pickled herring, but I'm guessing that's not what you'll do with them.

I enjoy them pan fried, like eating potato chips.

They're a popular winter past-time for many anglers. They're currently feeding on smaller spearing, but are normally found feeding on ghost shrimp. Using any lure that resembles the above would yield positive results.

Many Sabiki rigs are made to mimic shrimp and are very good for herring. I was using a Hayabusa rig in mixed yarn.

They don't fight well for their size, but they don't quite give up either. They'll fight until you bring them up, but the excitement really comes from pulling up 5 fish at a time, one on each hook. It's like a dancing Christmas tree coming out of the water.

I have had canned pickled herring and also smoked herring and liked them both.. Never had them fresh, however...

I fished with a friend near Juneau Alaska and we caught a bunch of herring on sabiki rigs, but we used them for bait for halibut and salmon...

only had them as bait for other fish like stripers.  they seem to like them.  apparently I'm deprived.  we would catch them pretty fast on herring rigs.  like tree'd lines off the main line, each with a small brass hook, blue-green bead, and synthetic little dragon fly like wings.  seems like once you're into them they keep biting.  if you're not catching anything then move.
