Deer Yarding Up

This cold snap should get the deer yarding up. Three days ago we had a group of ten deer in the yard but when driving around there were still a lot of single and double deer sightings in fields.

My area of witness is Ontario and Livingston County. What are the deer like in your area. Include County or Towns of reference in your reports.

Not all that far from you and they have been in groups of 4-10. Most sightings have been on my travels through farm lands and the 3 groups on our place. I say 3 due to Times and cam locations from card pulls. The biggest group has been on our WW/ clover. I think due to the night pics advantage.

I haven't seen much evidence of yarding here in Erie Co.(9h)

Matter of fact, I haven't seen much evidence of deer gatherings PERIOD. Perhaps the are yarded somewhere I am not aware of, but they really seem to  be spread out more this winter compared to years past around here.

Here's  shot I got back in 2013 while shed hunting in East Aurora. This was probably only half of them I could fit in the frame out in the field at one time. I remember another herd of equal size at the other end of this field at the same time.

DEER IN THIS PART OF THE STATE DON’T YARD UP LIKE IN THE ADK. WHAT WE SEE ARE DEER FROM THE GENERAL AREA GOING TO WHERE THE MOST FOOD IS. I HAVE 2 DOE GROUPS COMING TO MY BIRD FEEDER DOWN THE ROAD THERE IS SOME STANDING CORN THERE’S 20 OR MORE DEER IN THERE A NIGHT. IT IS A GOOD WAY TO SEE ABOUT HOW MANY DEER ARE IN THE AREA.

SORRY THE CAPS LOCK WAS DOWN

down here in 3m we have not seen much of anything going on unusual any way. Did see 14 in the field across from the barn but theirs plenty for them to eat between round bales and chopped corn in bags there. Sometimes you see 20 -30 in the herd in fall heading to the clover and alfalfa fields we have had 1 storm and the snows is gone temps are up should be a easy winter for them here.

  • 2 weeks later...

Beautiful morning, 24°F, no wind and sun beaming down on 23 deer out across the field out back.  16 in low brush (dried goldenrod) with 5 of those bedded down. The 7 more up on a field rise where the snow has melted to expose the grasses. I had the spotting scope out and could see one that looked like a buck who had just lost his rack. I'm not absolutely sure but it was definitely a gnarly forehead.

During the 15 minutes or so of watching/counting deer, a very healthy looking fox came out of the nearside goldenrod obviously looking for mice.

From what ive seen over the years, where i hunt and live in 8P, the deer dont really yard up, maybe into some 2 or 3 family doe groups .. but thats about it. My guess is because of the amount of food around. From ag fields and food plots and natural browse.. there must be enough of it around.

But this picture above is proof obv. must depend on the area and its food source per deer #

We see large groups of deer during muzzleloader season, then over the past several winters, a group of 7 or 8 mature fawns, with two to four mature deer on scattered days. I'm sure patterns will change here once farmers start growing more vegetables with the coming of Pride Pak Canada building a new processing plant, one county over.
