I love it when a plan comes together. I woke at 3:30  showered ,dressed and headed out the door with press and seal over my gun barrel slung over my shoulder. Decoys tucked everywhere. It was raining side ways and dark as sin...had the head lamp on green until I could make out the trail to turn it off. I set the jake over a sitting hen then placed the other two hens spread out in front of them . Settled into the cardboard blind. I have to say this is my 7th spring ,as I recall, and that blind is still dry!...a bit beaten this year ...rodents chewed the walls above the windows up good but the tarp is still intact. the cardboard roof is sagging but not leaking at all.

just before legal hunt I did a few tree yelps  and at 5:45 I spotted The Tom walking through our woods but he stopped ,gobbled and strutted 80 yrds, out....then I watched a hen fly down and he looked to have walked off over the ridge...by 6 a.m. all 6 hens had dropped down and from where? darn near over the blind In a perfect line the boss hen proceeded to walk them all exactly half way between me and the new brush blind...I was calling with my voice and got a few hens vocal and the Tom gobbling but that lead hen was having none of it, I thought for sure this hunt  was over. Then the Tom got parallel to my set up and he saw the Jake... That was it he came on a full run leaving his hens alone...I had ranged it and afraid he'd disappear between the big maples if too close to my set up I shot at 26yrds...he toppled but recovered to continue full board past me...I had to switch windows and shoot again dropping him 27 yrds away...6:14 and he was moving no more.

This is the Tom with the wavy beard...20 #'s 9 1/8th in. beard and 7/8th in. spurs.

What a fun hunt in the pouring rain.
