  1. I was taught the "old school" way growing up, not harvest any does and shoot the first legal buck that presented an ethical shot. Right around 2004 we bought a new piece of property and purchased a book by the Doughertys which to this day is still the best management book I have read. Since then we have been harvesting does and passing bucks. The moral to this story is what changed our mentality was education, I know it will not work for all but it may work for some. BTW I am all for the one buck rule.
  2. If you have a lot of deer they will eat it before the ears are developed, they will rip them off as soon as it silks.
  3. I plant 3 acres of corn every spring, I go through in mid july and broadcast brassicas throughout the field. I also run a solar fence to keep the deer out until I want them to enter the field, it keeps out 90% of the deer. Once I take the fence down I run over the corn with either my tractor or wheeler to create shooting lanes and keep as much corn standing as possible. Works fantastic.
  4. Awesome!! Congrats on the business venture. What sets your product apart from the other products on the market?
  5. Well I am an hunter in NY that supports 1 buck per hunter and a bunch of hunters I know do as well, I think we would see a bigger impact on buck size than with antler restrictions. People would also get to choose the buck they use their tag on.
  6. I personally practice antler restrictions but would not like seeing them implemented. I think you should have a choice of what deer you harvest if you have the tags. I am all for the one buck per season, and I think they should change it to a male female tag. If you shoot a button buck you get to use a male tag. People would pay more attention to what they are shooting, and it would help control the herd better. (you would have exact male/female take (besides all of the ethical hunters that decide not to tag their deer)). I am sure many will disagree, and I doubt it would ever happen but that's what I would like to see happen.
  7. My dad is wore out he cant climb tree stands anymore and doesn't like being out in the cold. A couple years ago I built a insulated hunting tower that we have a small propane heater in and run comfortable computer chairs, with stairs instead of a ladder. He enjoys going out and hunting in it never gets cold anymore its very comfortable and if he falls asleep its no big deal because he does not have to worry about falling out. It may be an option if you have property that you can build one on. Just a thought may get you a few more years of hunting with your father!!
  8. Or if a nice buck crosses in front of your vehicle
  9. I hope all of you complaining about people spotlighting don't shine your headlights in the field if you happen to see some eyes.
  10. I take does for meat and wait for the big boy. I enjoy watching/passing on smaller bucks.
  11. Someone posted a video a couple months ago of a study that the DEC did on road killed does. Does anybody have the link for that? Thanks in advance.
  12. I don't know St. Lawrence County so I could not answer that question. I think the biggest thing in most of NYS is getting enough of the neighbors on the same page and letting the deer get some age on them. If you are lucky enough to purchase property in an area that people are letting bucks walk you will have pretty good luck seeing nice deer. If you have time go spotlighting around the property that you are thinking about purchasing it will give you a good idea of what is going on around there.
  13. The deer numbers are strong (although buck to doe ratio is pretty bad), as far as deer size there are a lot of people that shoot every 1 1/2 that walks by. You will see some 2 1/2s along with the rare 3 1/2+ running around. If you can get around the right neighbors there is potential to have some very nice deer.
  14. something to secure the sleeve on your hunting jacket if bow hunting to reduce the probability of hitting it with your string. a cushion to sit on!!! Hunting license is always useful.
  15. I love that QDMA article, I have never read that one before.
