  1. Scouting tonight. Found a pretty solid trail. No scraps ore rubs yet. Just hair and droppings. Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
  2. The two bows on the left were built by my father. He's currently building a long bow for my brother in law and had plans to build a recurve cross bow. It outta be interesting.
  3. I found a local rod and gun club, in hopewell junction, that I'll be checking out later this week. Coincidentally I'm going to be signing my daughter up for the 4-H shooting program there. I live in New windsor and started going to Stewart state forest last year. I just started scouting fahnestock state forest recently. Since I don't have any connections in the hunting community State land is my only option for now. I have my license and practice as much as I can. I really need to get a block target to practice with my broadheads. All though every aspect of hunting is important and I enjoy it all, especially being in the woods, my skills to actually locate deer are the ones that need the most help. Identifying scrapes, rubs, and trails as well as where to set up a blind or tree stand. So the best way to do that is to actually go with an experienced hunter. I think the club idea will be a great resource for finding like minded hunters that would be willing to help. Thanks All,
  4. Hey all, I've recently got interested in hunting last season, mind you, I've never been hunting and I did not grow up in a family that hunts. I've been reading through articles, books and trying to apply everything I've read in the field and scouting. I'm probably going about this the hardest way possible but, since I already have a recurved bow, that is what I'm starting with. It is a 58" recurve with a 50lb draw weight and it was made by my father. He took up archery and building bow and arrows in his retirement. I haven't found anyone in my profession that hunts, thus why I'm turning to the online forums for assistance. In short, I'm looking for someone to show me the ropes. In exchange I can offer my culinary experience as trade. I am a chef and part time butcher with experience sausage making and charcuterie. Thanks, Sean

    Rub???

So I'm still new to hunting and are looking for the signs of deer. Is this a rub?. Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
  8. I know about the one car per parking locations marked on the map. When I called the Region 3 DEC about hunting in a certain zone correlating to that parking spot they said that there was none. As for the nails in the tree, that makes a lot sense. I could see how that could be misconstrued to an ECO. Thank you for looking out.
  9. Yes I read the pamphlet and I called The Region 3 DEC office to ask additional questions. If your talking about the Oak tree that I climbed up. The nails were already there and it wasn't a stand, just a way to get into the tree.
  10. So here's my first of many questions... What is the best method of hunting for a newbie? Ground blind tree stand stalking or none of the above and I'm going about this all wrong. I went out for the first time this morning at Stewart state forest. It wasn't my first or second choice but it's convenient to where I live and the other locations I found out needed a permit on top of getting my license and I just wanted to get out there. Got there around 5:45, gathered my stuff and started walking in on one of the main trails. I'd never been there before, obviously never scouted the place and only had the map the website supplied. About a 1/2 mile in I came to a large Oak tree with some nails tapped in, like a ladder, climbed up and waited for sunrise. (beautiful morning by the way) I spent most of my day watching squirrels chase each other and having a staring contest with a barred owl. With the exception of some bird hunters tromping through it was a quiet day. (no deer sittings) Thank you in advance Sean
  11. Just to put it out there...I'm willing to trade services for some hands on experience. AKA, I am looking for a mentor. I'm a chef by trade and pretty well versed in breaking down whole animals (mostly pigs, a lot of fish) I haven't broken down a deer or bear yet but the muscular and skeletal systems are all very similar.

    Hello

Hello everyone, I'm new to hunting and I am trying to learn as much as possible. I've been reading books and online doing research but that only gets you so far. I've always been into outdoor activities (rock climbing, kayaking, snowshoeing etc) and now the hunting bug has bitten. I'll try not to ask too many stupid questions that haven't already been asked, but no guarantees. Thank you all in advance for your help. Sean
