Been focusing on taking out coyote, so Mus hunting took a backseat.

Since it's been getting warmer I decided to take the Mus rig for a spin.

	It didn't disappoint.

Not the best image, but it was very humid.

Post your 2024 fall predator hunt videos or pics here.

I'll start it off with three of the four I dropped the first week.

My scope crapped the bed, so no video of these hunts.

Well the wind was so bad last night (You can hear it in the video) that we didn't go coyote hunting, so I decide to finally do some mus hunting around the abode with the Rix Storm S2 scope I purchased last year for the PCP rifle.

The S2 is the cheapest bare minimum 256 res scope with a 3.5x base mag to get a shot at a tiny mus at 20 yards, especially with the PIP feature.

While 256 resolution isn't the greatest, it's more than enough for my short range needs and now I have a dedicated thermal rig for mus hunting.

I like to squirrel hunt after deer season is through , primarily because I just cant hang up the guns quite yet and accept the fact that huntings over till next November!! Just today, I read an article in Game & Fish on Squirrel hunting in which the Author states that hunting is actually best late morning and early afternoon this time of year. Im assuming this is so because its mid-winter at this point and too cold early and late for Squirrels so they wait for the woods to warm up a bit. From my experience, however, squirrels have been plenty active early in the am , maybe not crack of dawn like deer , but early enough. I like to get into the woods around 8am and hunt till about noon, normally because for me, afternoons typically havent been as productive; what say you?

Headed north from central PA to tug Hill area for Hare and possibly grouse.

	One beagle accompanying me.

Got in the woods ( 3 feet plus snow) with snowshoes on and sank in 15 -28" in the beautiful snow .

We found an older (hours old ) covered up track but couldn't see it much after a few yds .

Hare were hunkered down under the pine boughs .

After an hour of searching/sinking we headed to a no snow forest near Parrish. Found some likely looking cover for hare...but alas no sign ..sad face me..

Just before dark I found a small clearcut.

Walking in a grouse erupts abruptly away from me

I take a long shot but it's heading down over a small bank.

	Missed apparently.

Flushed another on the way out but the bird was gone in an instant.

Nice day in the 40" plus snow and then bare ground discovering new areas.

I only seen a few people deer hunting.

There's a lot of smaller forests in new York compared to Pa and their mostly big woods.

	I'll be back soon !!

The weather has been absolutely beautiful, It has been quite a few years since I had a small game hunting season like this one, the small game population has been very good providing a lot of action. The Squirrels have come back in big numbers, have flushed several Grouse but have not taken one yet, knocked off a Cottontail Rabbit and made a heck of a shot with my Remington 541 on a Crow this week so far.

The Crow's wing was busted and he hit the ground running into the woods, I went back to my house and got my Airedale pup Ruff and put him on the track, what a nice job he did tracking that crow and I was surprised on how far that crow ran before the pup caught him, blood tracking Deer will be like rolling off a log for this guy.

My Dad talked a lot about hunting with a sling shot when he was a young boy, he made his own equipment using mostly tire inner tubes to propel his shot. He claimed to have killed squirrels and rabbits with his home made sling shots. I have played around with sling shots myself and they can be quite entertaining, I used steel balls for ammo but I have never hunted with it. If I am not mistaken sling shot are illegal in NY these days.

Anyhow I came across this fellow's site and was amazed on how big sling shots are in his part of the world. When you can not own and fire guns like we here in the USA you come up with plan B. If there is a will to hunt there is a way, with trained Dogs, Ferrets and sling shots these guys are still hunting and they are good at it. They also hold competitive sling shot matches. Take a good look, as it pertains to hunting this country of ours is heading down the same path as Europe did a bout 50 years behind, we may be hunting with sling shots here one day.

Saw some nice knifes and collections in the thread for field dressing Deer and wondered if there was the same type of enthusiasm with the the small game and bird hunters. For doing up most of my small game animals and birds I like and collect bird hunter's pocket knives with the toothpick or clip style blade along with a gut hook for removing bird entrails. These knives also work well for me when skinning out any furbearers I take.

	Last sunday's hare hunt adventure.

Barely any snow...just a patch here and there.

	Hunted 3 hours no jumps.

Moved a different spot another state forest and not 50 feet off the road I spy a hare sitting in a 10 foot deep depression in the ground.

I decided to let the beagle sight chase it And track it.

The dog sees it jump out and begins barking trailing almost immediately.

	I maneuver Into an open area;

But 50 yds or so away suddenly the barks stopped.

	???

	I'm thinking a hole ?

I move to where gunner is and find an old house foundation with a hole aside a tree.

I immediately remembered that it was the same hole from last year's wounded hare I shot at in a foot of snow .

	Go figure!

Hare do go to ground .

	Contrary to popular belief.

I'm thinking it may have been a female possibly?

Either way a smart hare .

We didn't jump another the rest of the day.

Rain came around 2pm so I headed home.

I'm glad the dog seen it at least.

	Those hare sit tight !

Till next season I hope this hare reproduces.

Took a walk with my Airedale Harleigh to see if we could bag as the old timers would say a "Patridge", a Hare or a Squirrel would make due. Took out one of my favorite shotguns, an LC Smith side by side double. We had a good hunt, Harleigh flushed a Grouse but I only heard it, no chance for a shot. She then made a tree on a Squirrel, she did a good job sticking with it as it timbered through three different trees before I could get a good shot and knock it out to her.

We had a great time old Harleigh and I.
