I dont know about you guys but the anticipation is growing in me by leaps and bounds. Cannot wait until 6:00am to take that first walk in the dark to start the 2011 season. Although its not that far of a walk i am super pumped. Recurve is shooting well. Hung a new stand over a food plot which is growing great for a first time plot. Bushnell trophy cam awaiting me pulling the card and seeing what has been going on in that field near my stand since August 19, 2011. I honestly dont know what excites me more, getting in that hemlock with my bow or sitting down in my stand and checking the memory card while i await the dawn of opening day. Man i love hunting. Best of luck to everyone.1 point

Actually, deer screwing up perfectly executed bow shots is a very well video-documented occurance and that applies with modern high-performance bows and arrows as well. The fastest bow and arrow combination is still a long way from the 1126 fps which is the speed of sound. A deer that is spring-loaded and on "set", and ready to react to the slightest sound or movement is still a challenge for the best of archery equipment.1 point

I'm have an addiction to this site! I have about a 2 hour commute to and from work.....I used to read the paper on the train to stay up with current events. Now that I got a smart phone all I do is read the posts on here.......its getting worse as the season is approaching! Now I have no clue what's going on in the world..(thanks John.....haha). How many of you are in the same boat? I gotta give John lots of credit, this site is great!1 point

with the current compound bows and or even a trad bow in the 50 lb range I sure do not see deer jumping the string. The biggest issue is in the use of 5.5 feathers on some trad arrows. I do hear a slight noise as the arrow is released. But if anything it is so fast to the deer at 20 yards they do not get the chance to jump. I have had one look and then see the arrow in it side, then jump and run for about 55 yards and that was it.1 point

So you think that a 50 acre woodlot is going to sustain 50 to 100 deer through a north country winter... I would have to say you are sadly mistaken reguardless of what i do to enhance the woods.I appreciate what you say you know as far as deer nutrition but i would have to say i know a thing or two about the needs of the whitetail deer. On another note hunting on mountain land and farm land is alot different than supplemental feeding for wintering deer on farm or mountain land. When 500 acres of soybeans or corn is harvested depending on the crop of the year, the deer and turkeys and any other animal that has been hitting that food source changes.1 point

also to throw in "unethical" is kind of un called for IMO... he has every right to let that buck expire THE RIGHT WAY. guys with the mentality of getting on that trail so soon are the ones who usually loose their deer quick... that deer would be fine over night into late morning with out a problem in my opinion...1 point

I'm rearing to go....same as you before sunrise I seem to relive past hunts....The only problem I have is that my walk to stand is a long one in the dark...but it would not be bad if it werent for flushing grouse....nothing more makes you crap your pants then a flushing grouse a few feet from you in the pitch black....1 point

Arrows make the same noise with field tips. The majority of what you are hearing is the friction of the air passing over the vanes. You can hear it when someone is shooting just down from you at the range. Deer have no idea what the noise is, but if they are on full alert, they will react the same to almost any noise.1 point

deer love to bed on the side of hills. The opposite side the wind is blowing from.that way they can watch down hill and smell what is coming from behind.Kinda like a human looking down hill for a deer right. You gotta think like the deer.I have seen this many times with a little snow on the ground. You can see more beds on the side of a hill when the leaves fall than in thick crap. Watch out hunting ridges cause of upward wind drafts. When the wind blows across the top of a ridge it will draw wind up from the bottom of the valley.Kind of like when driving in your truck and the wind blows over the cap and you get the air coming upward on the back window.Ever see a can swirl around in the back of the truck while driving down the road?It will do this and swirl your scent around. Valleys and ridges can be hard to hunt.Sitting on the top of a ridge can work to your favor but you got to do your homework. You can easialy be busted long before you know you have.1 point

Ok getting back to the topic and away from saftey issues. I think you raise a good point. I could hear the arrow and broadhead approaching the target each time. Sounded like a hissing sound. So I'm pretty sure a deer can. I would even say that each broadhead sounded louder or softer. I think the deer hear both the string and then the arrow/broadhead tracking towards them. I also think that an already alerted or "spooked" deer is more likely to "jump the string" than a relaxed animal.1 point

Practicing I understand. But sighting in you need to eliminate the varibles inherent with offhand shooting to ensure the gun and load is grouping.1 point

the ripshot is cool though when hubby broke his hand and it also effected some of the fingers he tried to use the JimmyT and he could not control that to draw the bow back and with the ripshot he was able to and the company stands behind their product cause the one strap was getting a tear in it cause of a bur on the metal part and they sent out a replacement for free we have told alot of people about the ripshot and they love it is also is good if you have a bad shoulder too my FIL has a bumb shoulder and he was able to shot the bow with ease with the ripshot. I want to get myself one and maybe our 2 son's one if they want one.1 point

Thanks, ny hunter. I wasn't much of a fan of Stewart because it's like a war zone there. You hear a shotgun blast every other minute but I have to pay the price for my mistakes and I guess I'll have to deal with it. I'll also check out Storm King and California Hill. Know anything about those areas? Will stick with West Point during rifle season.1 point
