  2. Went to my dads property this afternoon. I don't bow hunt much there due to the distance plus I have two better spots. 2 weeks ago I hung a stand in a new spot & due to the wind direction today this was my best option. Got settled in about 20 after 4. Wiped the sweat off me and about 5pm 3 doe slowly made the way towards me. Finally at 20yrs I made the shot. I hit her to high up but luckily came out good on the back side. Called my wife and she drove down with our 5yr old to tag along on the track. She made it about 80yrs. First time my son got to tag along and he loved it. Driving home he asked if we could cook some of the meat tonight!! Yup he's totally hooked. She's almost all cut up. I have to say I love taking a doe early with the bow its a great confidence builder for me!!

  3. I stuck this 8pt last night at 5:45 pm. All night long there was a light misting rain and it had the deer moving! I had a doe and fawn came in really early. It was the smallest fawn that I have ever seen this time of the year. Covered in spots and couldn't have weighed more than 40lbs. Shortly after I had a total of 6 does work their way in. They all made it within 20yds but I had no intentions of taking a doe yet so I let them all walk. The rain stopped, the sun went down and here he comes!! A nice 8pt worked his way down the lane a presented a 10yd broadside shot to me! Yeah I love it when a plan comes togther!

  4. When I was 3 I was in the sand box in the back yard before the area was developed and my dad was on the porch. He seen 3 yotes come into the yard trotting toward me. The dog we had at the time was a lab/spaniel mix and was inside the house. He seen the yotes and went nuts. Busted thru the screen door and attacks the 3 yotes scaring 2 off with with a wounded ego and killed the 3rd one. Gave my dad time to get me and out me inside. He came back outside with the shotgun to help our dog and there was a dead yote feet from the sandbox. Greatest dog ever!! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free

  6. You want to meet for lunch and talk about this? I work in Manhattan and can easily meet you. I made a full length feature 10 years ago about my hunting experiences in NY. I'm an experienced FMP user and used all my video and photos for the last 20 years to create it. I'm not saying you can join me but could validate your request.

  11. Too minor of a deal to freak out over. Shake your head, drop a few muffled f-bombs and kill a deer tomorrow morning.

  15. Hello everyone, I'm a 25 year old grad student. My father's always hunted, but never invited me along. I have my safety certificates, and am very interested in doing my first few hunting trips this season. This is my first post in this forum, so hopefully it's the right place. I've been target practicing with my PSE Stinger 3G bow for a while now, and I can't find anyone in my area whose interested in hunting, surprisingly. If someone would be willing to take me a long to go hunt, I'd be really appreciative of such an experience. I'm up for anything, and eager to learn.

  21. I'm most certainly not looking to make a mockery of you or of hunting. I appreciate you being cautious - I would be too if I felt a threat to something I love. If you guys are serious about sitting and talking to me about it or taking me hunting and letting me film please send me private messages. We can do it on terms which you are ofcourse comfortable with. I'm based in Manhattan - willing to travel across the state to work on it.

  22. Agreed. I impose my own antler restrictions, as do most others. Your standards of a trophy may differ greatly from someone who is feeding several at home or a hunter that has two days off to spend outdoors. My previous 4-6 hours comment is based upon recommendations from 'hunting experts' and hunting celebrities.

  23. I shot a 30-06 up until last year and it was never enjoyable............it was not a recoil friendly rifle, so last year I bought a .308, much less recoil......getting a rifle that is enjoyable to shoot is more important than caliber, and it will show in your accuracy.

  24. I have the Remington 700 in a .270 it's a great round but since you added bear why not get. A .308. Either round will do the trick thou Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free

  26. I always have to laugh at everyone who discounts New York state. I guess it is easier to say we live in state that has no potential for decent bucks. Will we grow bucks the caliber that Ohio, Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, etc can in the volume they can..... NO. Likely we will have much smaller, likely 20 inches and a lower number of B&C bucks. But the state can and does already grow very nice bucks. Some facts to think about. A 1.5 year old buck still has his milk teeth, he is the equivalent of a 13 year old boy in terms of physical maturity. a 1.5 year old buck has around 10 percent of a whitetail buck's potential antler development. At 2.5 years old a whitetail buck has still only grown around 25-35 percent of his potential antler mass. While I am not in favor of Statewide AR's, I am all in favor of Voluntary passing 1.5 year old bucks. My reasons for preferring a 2.5 or older vs a 1.5 are: They are harder to hunt, and I like a better racked buck than what a 1.5 year old can biologically produce. What buck would most hunters rather harvest.... here? They can't get bigger if taken at one and half. This picture show the number of bucks entered as B&C bucks.... as you can see the whole state varies. the soils are much better in WNY and more and more people are voluntarily passing on 1.5 year olds out here. But it proves the old adage that NY while never produce good racked bucks. The soil difference in NY state is the same reason why big buck states are able to produce better bucks... but NY has great hunting and great potential. The biggest factor is Age, that half inch decision with the trigger is key. Another good resource is the NY Big Buck Club.... it shows a good number of super bucks all taken from Poor Little NY http://www.nysbigbuckclub.com/ Here is a WNY Buck that was a Spike at 1.5, this pic is of him at 3.5 and yes he is a wild free range buck. He has a white nose that has made him easy to ID. This is from a friends property! NY is making progress.,... last year 2.5 year old bucks made up 44% of the buck harvest. In 2000 it was only 33%, still over 110,000 plus 1.5 year old bucks were taken in 2012 just over 52% of the buck harvest. Imagine if those 110,000 plus bucks had a chance to see 2.5. I don't like mandatory because I feel we are over legislated. Also when you look at the NY B&C map, obviously the state differs. Some guys cant get a doe permit.... statewide is not a good idea. Individual area management, hunter education and support Is key. Also I feel, very young and old hunters should be able to harvest anything... and on my property they get a green light. The rest of the hunters are on a 8 point min. This brings up an issue.... AR's are an easy rule, but is flawed. In WNY most of our 1.5 year olds already have 3 pt a side... so it will not save them. Hunting by age is key, but difficult for people who are not vested in learning to age. Anyone can learn between 1.5 and 2.5 but it takes time and effort. Happy Hunting.

  29. Just keep it to a light toot or two, leave a fair amount of time between sessions, and never ever do it if a deer is alert and looking in your general direction. Fun, isn't it?

  31. She led a group of 10 deer into a soy bean field and pegged me when she was at 60 yards. Stared each other down for 5 minutes. Continued walking towards a sunflower field then turned back with the group. 3 big doe and 7 fawns. They browsed at 60 yards for 10 minutes, she then walked towards me to 38 yards and started to walk away. Shot her right behind the shoulder, she acted like she wasn't hit and went 10 yards and dropped. Bear Attack w/ easton axis nfused, 2 inch rage cut on contact.

  34. Had 11 deer come out in my new plot this morning. 4 does, 4 button bucks, 3 fawn does. Shot the biggest doe at 20 yards quartering to me. Rage took out lung and heart. She ran ~80 yards and piled up. 130 lbs hanging. Didn't have my camera arm but got video of her before I shot her.

  36. Fresh droppings from around our place...there's plenty every place...use to use our goats urine and I would tie rags to the collars of my bucks...they urinate in their mouths and face then flem...after a week I'd untie the rags and put them in a plastic bag...then hang near stand....Always had buck deer hanging around the goat barn in the fall....now I grind fresh deer droppings in my boots and drop fresh pellets..or use an Avocado mesh bag and put droppings in that and drag to stand...

  38. NO idea what a selfie is, first year out im still learning. i was heading back out this morning but decided it better for me to reduce my pack weight as there were some things that i know i am not gonna need after being out there two days and not using any of it. also i have a set of knives that is way overkill as it weighs prolly two pounds with the holder when i only need to carry the gutting knife and the skinning knife, figure wraping it in a bandana is just as good a holder got like 3 cheap flashlights when, like someone else suggested i only need one good headlamp. was looking around to find a good one. saw one that can light up a hundred yards in front of you, figure that will be great for going in at night. hehe im a work in progress

  41. Saying they aren't dangerous is irrisponsible. Do dogs attack people? you betch ya. A coyote is a wild, large dog. They kill deer which are larger and more dangerous than a human (unarmed that is). I would never just assume that a pack of them wouldn't decide to test you out. I am always armed in the woods. I have some trail camera pics of some stinkin large coyotes right by my tree stand. I think about it every time I walk to it in the dark...lol.

  42. that feeling you got, is exactly why I hunt coyotes, I love it, let's you know your alive imagine they cut loose in the brush 50 yards behind you at 2:00 in the morning, in ptch dark, yup now I'm ready to go with that being said, they won't bother you, if you just stepped out into the feild, you would of seen just how fast they can run

  43. Lol...How many of you guys grew up or live in the cit/town ? Sorry if it offends, hard to convey attitude over the internet.Growing up in the boonies/woods, I always get a chuckle out of threads like this. There is always the off chance of an animal becoming aclimated to humans or sick.. I'm betting your odds of being attacked by a coyote in NY is only a fraction of a percantage point higher than being bit by a shark.....in the Adks

  48. This obviously isn't a NY kill, but it was my first harvest of the season. 4x4 bull elk, taken last Thursday in the Bob Marshall Wilderness in Montana. 25 yard quarter to shot, got both lungs, liver and some gut and sliced up the offside hindquarter. He went about 150 yards and watched him drop.
