  1. My son hunted my stand on Sunday morning and shot at a nice 8 pointer at 7:30. He took a 43 yard shot, knew he hit it, and it took off up the hill and to really thick stuff. He waited an hour and headed over but found no blood. He followed where the deer headed, found the arrow, covered in a clear liquid and some other stuff on it. He put the arrow in the ground looked up the trail and still no blood. He came home and looked up "Gut shot deer" and other material on the subject and they all said let it sit for 8 to 12 hours. Instead, he called find deer search, who said they'd try to send somebody and he'd call back. He came down around 2:00 and they found the original spot where he'd shot, hit the arrow on the trail, and the dog kept going up the hill. Within minutes, the dog started pawing at some high grass area, and sure enough, the deer bedding back in there, and was dead. No blood at all. It turned out it was a great heart shot, but closed up right away, even where bedding down. Thanks to deer search, and an interesting thing he said is that he called them right away without disturbing the area. Too many times, hunters go in, disrupt the whole area and make it hard to find a good scent trail. Anyway, the buck may still be alive if I were in the stand instead cause I won't take a 40 yard shot. I may have to practice a lot more at 40 and 50 yards to even think about it. Hopefully, he left me a nicer deer, but it's still a long season to go. We'll see!!

  5. Well Saturday evening was quite exciting for me. Hunting 3A in the catskills which is a very very sparce region with one of the lowest harvest rates in all of Newyork. Around 5:45 I was sitting at a crossroads coming off of a rock ledge and the lower areas by the esopus river. 2 does came walking through and then I saw him.. and told myself there is no way this is happening an 8 pointer is rolling in behind the girls. I wait for the girls to pass, I stand up and wait for him to come in. He puts his head down to sniff or something and I draw back.. he walks a few more steps probably 20 yards tops and gives me a perfect broadside. Arrow was through and through right into the heart. He lept and took a few steps. Wobbled and fell over.. game over. So I successfully got my First buck, and to that affect a Catskill buck =) Im quite pleased with how things turned out. Spent the afternoon today quartering him up, and getting him into the fridge. I will finish the butchering and cleaning up the meat before freezing them away. Spoke with a taxidermist and will be having him shoulder mounted since hes my first buck and bow kill and I could not be happier with the outcome. -Dors

  6. I am Happy, happy, happy!!!! Took a walk around scouting after my morning hunt today. Found 2 spots I wanted to hunt; a creek bottom and a ridge top. Went back this afternoon with my climber strapped to my back and headed for the ridge. Shortly before 6pm., I spotted a deer far off through the woods; maybe 100yds away. It was heading north along the ridge and I noticed it was a buck. I was east of him and pulled out my bleat can and gave it a turn. He stopped briefly and began walking again. Pulled out the grunt tube and gave it a couple hits. He stopped but my view was obscured. I stood ready for several minutes scanning for any movement. Was he still out there? Then, I heard the soft crunching of leaves. He had swunf wide and was coming in down wind. There was a Tulip tree adjacent my stand and the leaves blocked his approach. When he cleared the Tulip tree, he was right in front of me at about 15yds. I just remember thinking, "he's a shooter." I began to draw and trouble arose. My lighted nock pulled out of the arrow shaft. WTF! I got the knock back in and he was stopped, quartering away. I prayed the nock would stay inserted as I drew back on him. Just as I anchored, he began to walk again. Only a few steps before stopping again. Practice paid off as I saw an opening through the branches and thought I could thread it through. The Magnus Buzzcut made a complete pass thru and stuck in the ground; lighted nock still in place. He took off running and made it 40-50yds and stopped. It is now that I am hoping that I made a solid shot. Then, his back rump dropped slightly. Was he going to go down? That's just what happened. He got weak in the knees and woobled, then hit the ground. He was done. Just as it started to rain. Once I remembered how to use my phone(my hands went numb), I started calling friends and family. And my cousin, I was going to need help loading him up.

  9. Good, I find humor the best way to deal with a miss. You should be good at it because you miss nearly all of the deer you shoot at. I thought bigger deer were easier to hit due to their size? Guess not. I wish I could help you more but I don't miss a whole lot so I am at a loss for advice for you. Maybe take up small game? OK I'm done for now.

  12. This is my thought too. Most fat is deposited on a deer's back with the majority on the rump. I can't remember finding fat on a deer's neck. There would likely be some fat in the brisket area. Was the hair short, dark and coarse (brisket) or long and slightly crimped (back)? Either way it sounds like you hit the deer really high or low and is a non-fatal wound.

  14. Congrats. If he makes you happy, then that is all that matters. I don't think he's old at all, but that's a moot point. He's not getting any older and you are happy!

  17. He was at 8 yards. Today I had the kids so I decided to get the yard and outside of the house buttoned up for winter. I also got the generator and snow blower out and got them ready as well. I did some back yard shooting with my daughter. I have to say, the kid is a natural. She shot 15 rounds of 3 arrows. Out of all shots, only 2 were outside of the vitals on the target. Shes just shooting 10 yards for now. We are gonna work on 20 the next time.

  18. Hi guys, I just recently moved here from Louisiana "the sportsmans paradise". I live in Brookly and never really considered doing any hunting while I was up here. I have a large lease in Louisiana that I can usually harvest about 5-8 deer a year off of. It seems I won't be able to take the time off to fly back home for my hunts. So here I am looking for help from the NY pros.

  19. So I moved here in May of this year for a Job. I thought I was going to be able to handle not deer hunting on my lease in Louisiana this year. Well, lets just say I'm itching to get into the woods to bow hunt. I really just need to get away from the city and sit in a tree to get my head right. Even if I don't see a deer. Anyone on here willing to show me the ropes around here or give me any advice on places to hunt would be great. I live in Brooklyn but would be willing to travel a few hours to a place if it's nice and promising. Thanks in advance.

  21. Hi everyone! Just posted up in the intro section, but figured I'd show off my first deer here too! Got a late start Sunday morning and headed to the stand about 6:30am. Got to my stand about 6:50 and started up. After hanging my backpack and pulling up my bow, I got an itch in my head that I was being watched! I slowly turn my head and see a decent size deer about 40 yds away! I dont even have an arrow on the string yet! It's still kinda dark, so I nock up and just wait. I wont take a shot unless I am 95% sure of a kill, plus, it's technically not sunrise yet. I basically wait and pray that it sticks around! It wanders around a bit and it starts to get light. It moves within about 15/20 yds and presents me with a beautiful broadside shot! I take the shot and THEN start shaking. (Thank you U.S. Army for allowing me to calm my nerves before/during the shot!) The deer jumps up and sprints back the way it came. It's my first ever deer with bow OR gun, and I dont even know if I hit it! I don't want to move, just in case he's still close, so I just sit and wait another hour. Longest hour of my life! Finally, I get down from my stand and carefully check the impact site. No blood, no fur, nothing! I dont see my arrow either, so I still dont have any idea if I even hit it. I didnt even think about the fact that it wouldnt start bleeding right away. I start circling and looking for any sign of a hit. I'm 10 yds from the impact site and still dont see anything. By chance, I look up and see him just lying there. He only got about 20 yards away before he collapsed and died!! Long story short, I'm sitting here right now eating a yummy venison roast glazed in mushroom and onion sauce! 6 point, yielded about 75 lbs of meat.

Sounds like you are bothered by what other people think, ones that have scored this year and you have not .If they think it is a contest who gets the biggest, most or soonest. That is up to them to think what they want.It should not bother or upset you.Gust block it out of you mind and go out there and hunt ,enjoy the outdoors, It is what you think not what they do that will make yourself happy.Hang in there the big one will show up.It's a waiting game.

  26. Welcome to NYC and welcome to the forum. Once you leave the sportsman's paradise you're obviously going to be some what disappointed with the hunting most anywhere else you go. Still, crowded as it might be, there are lands you can hunt near NYC. Check DEP Watershed lands. Also go to DEC website and download their GoogleMap plugins to get state land listings. Each parcel of land has their own separate rules on top of any state and county rules so if you're not sure, call DEC to double-check. For example, some lands out in Long Island which should be close to you have a check-in system. I live in the Bronx so I don't really hunt Long Island. I usually head up to Westchester, Putnam, or Orange county.

  31. The difference between line of sigt distance and true horizontal distance is greater making the difference more but the amount our set ups drop in those short yardages are very small so the differences are less. if you ar 15' up and the deer is 15' away (45 degree angle) there is a 2 yard difference between line of sight(7 yuards) and horizontal distance.(5 yards) . If you are using a 20 yard pin just aim a tad low. Like I said before shooting form. Oh and anatomy. we practice so much on 2 D atrgets and even the 3D's have the vital rings on the surface of the sides. works great for level on the ground shooting but envision where those inside organs are at the steep angles. If the deer is 5' from the tree what do you think the chances are of hitting a double lung? If you practice from an elevated place think about where the broad head passed through and not about that vital ting on the surface.

  32. Bubba is right: You file the charge for trespassing. Thereafter, you must prove that they, in fact, were trespassing: They crossed a posted boundary...They were refused permission to be on the premises...They refused to leave when asked to do so. If I were you, I'd start with a certified letter to them (copy to yourself) indicating that they do NOT have permission to be on your property, and that you will file charges if you catch them on your property. Once you are certain they have received the letter...File charges the next time you catch them (photo would be good) on your property. Good Luck, Early

  34. 10/20 am 46 Down in the outer hole stand this morn. It was still windy out but stopped raining during the night. Around 8 I had a fawn appear in front of me outa nowhere? She must have been bedded close by. Then around 9:20 I see some movement in the thick stuff off one huge shooting lane. The doe starts working her way towards my lane then turns and walks right away to about 80 yards and then crosses. I am think well there goes that! She stops out there and the second, the fawn, is still munching away off the right side. After about 3 or 4 minutes she starts coming back off the left side of my lane and at 35 yards cuts broadside right into it and stops. I wait for her to look away and touch one off. It looks like a good hit and she takes off and I hear a gurgling. I lose her after about 35 yards and can not hear a crash due to the wind. I sit about 20 minutes and then get down to take a look and am not thrilled to find my arrow broke off and only about 6 inches of penetration! I follow the trail into the most miserable crap and green briar. That is why I call this spot the hole! I am getting decent blood but after 75 yards I have not found her. I am getting concerned so I back out and meet my brother and we go back to the trucks to lose gear and clothes. We get back on it at about 11am and 25 yards past last spot I was we find her. She died flat out. I hit a bit right and broke the leg bone right in half then info the rib cage into a lung and some liver. Got her to the truck a bit after 1pm home and cleaned up she dressed out 107 pounds. Woohoo meat in the freezer!!

  35. I've been in similar situation before. A friend of mine's boss owns property in PA and him and his buddies tag out within a week out there. Laugh at me when they listen to my stories as if they're some master hunter and I'm some bumbling idiot. Offered to take me out there and show me how to "really hunt". My view on it is if someone does all the leg work (scouting, patterning, etc) for you, it doesn't take much to do nothing but pull a trigger. Outside of DEC and NYS state laws, you hunt with your own set of rules. I rather hunt on my own terms. Sure, chasing deer on public land has been really frustrating. I've been busted so many times, had small game hunter walk right through where we had set up a push, etc. but it makes my successes all that more satisfying and rewarding. Knowing that you did all the work from start to finish makes it truly your success.

  37. I harvested an adult swap donkey last night at 5:15, with my compound bow at 45 yards on state land. This was my second time out bow hunting this year. I had seven different deer come by where I was standing. I was hunting on the ground, with no blind. Eye ball to eye ball. The only thing that would have made it any better would be if I had used my long bow. I will use my long bow for the next one. Not to bad for someone 71 years old.

  38. Its more or less she thinks if i hunt with her family im guaranteed a deer. Told her it doesnt happen like that. They have 100's of acres and trail cams and foodplots. Told her they have those deer patterned real good. Either way my head is held high. Just getting a touch frustrating is all. But i keep telling myself if hunting was easy everyone would do it. Tomorow morning im going to just enjoy being in the woods and get back to why i started hunting. Love the outdoors and every minute i spend in it is awesome.

  43. Late post here everybody. My buddy Kenny shot this basket 8 on 10/7. The Rage did its job....only a 60-70 yd tracking job. We have been seeing a lot of buck movement since opening day. My other friend Pete shot an 8 a day after Kenny's. My son and I found a new area on Saturday.....had some fresh scrapes and a mix of old and new rubs. We hunted it that afternoon but didnt see anything. I went out again on Monday morning to the same spot and around 7:10 AM I had 3 does come in from my left....(or so I thought 3). I watched them come down the run single file and stop by a blow down about 25 yds from my stand. I stood up and positioned my self for a shot while they were behind the blow down. Breeze had changed and was now blowing from me to them. Little did I know was that doe #4 was watching me the whole time. I have no idea where she came from but she busted me big time....I got 2 head bobs and 3 stomps and then she blew at me. She must have been with the 3 but came in on a different angle so I never saw her. Needless to say I had 4 white flags waving bye bye to me. About an hour later I watched a momma with a tiny fawn 50 yds off to my left just browsing on branches and crunching up acorns. Watched them for about 15 mins until they walked off away from me. So 6 deer in an hours time and no shots but it was a fun morning. I did notice a brand new rub about 10 yds from my tree which wasn't there on Saturday afternoon. I'll be out again Sunday and Monday this weekend...I can't wait to see if there is any new sign of activity. Good luck all. Kennys 8 Petes 8

  45. I don't typically make mock scrapes now. I have in the past. Interesting tactic to say the least. I'd go to a scrape at one parcel, take dirt from it and maybe even snip one of the licking branches (if more than one). Go to the other parcel, create one about 10-20yds away from the biggest one using the materials, ziptying the licking branch.

  46. If you hit an artery anywhere on a deer - that's going to be a fatal shot within minutes, if not seconds in most all cases. I'd think an artery can't stop itself from pumping long enough to clot/heal, but anything is certainly possible as deer are resilient. Been there done that - and Joe is experiencing it now. I hope Joe sees him again, but I'd be more inclined to think he didn't graze this deer. We don't know because we don't have much to go on, but foamy blood doesn't come from an artery, that conerns me a bit.
