A very generous member on this site (phade), recently sent my grandsons, 11 and 13 years old, a trail cam. They have both spent a lot of time in the woods with me the last few years. Though they both enjoy the outdoors, the younger one, Zac is just nuts about deer and hunting. So this being their camera, we decided Zac would pick the first spot to place the cam. I let him lead the way in our woods out back. I told him that he was to pick the spot based on what he knows about our woods. So he did this all on his own, picking the exact spot, and even hung the cam himself. Thanks phade from me and the boys. #1- Nice doe #2- Up and coming buck #3- Same buck ? Not sure what do you guys think? #4- ?? #5- Can you find the deer? #6- My grandson Zac5 points

For one thing you are basically talking about two different animals when you speak of western(longhorn stalking) coyote's and the bigger and certainly urbanized Eastern coyote/wolf hybrid. You are correct on attempts to kill them causes a higher breeding rate, but that could be corrected with a year around hunting, just like with raccoons. When prices are down then trapping is as well. They both have few natural predators and populations can explode. It may be cyclical but right now we are in a growth...There is no denying such things when there are so many cameras in the woods these days, an increase in confrontations with them. Now I just love the fact I was poo whooed years ago when I spoke of the things these animals were doing, Oh no they are afraid..they don't run and hunt in packs...they don't get that big....Ya right. It wont be until they evolve even further, or just manage to pull up more of there wolf heritage and look to people as good opportunistic meals, will people like you say hey maybe something should be done. I personally do not like having to warn the little 80 yr old woman at the gym about taking her pup out to potty at night, when she tells me she had a few sets of eyes pacing the wood line as she stood in the yard. I certainly do not enjoy seeing all the now DAY TIME pics I'm getting of them. hearing PACKS howling half the night. Let me say this one more time..Animals do not always do the things that the "experts" say they do..I would think that all these radio collard studies that have been going on would finally get ppl to realize this.Like Ohh we had no idea there was that big a population in Chicago,Toronto ,NYC...really Because 30 years ago there was a thriving population in Avon NY and most people knew it...I witnessed it nightly on my midnight bike rides around town...Time to wake up.5 points

There is a stump in front of the tree. He stood on the stump and got it about six feet up. Said,he didn't want the deer to see the cam. At 11 he's learning fast!3 points

First I would like to ask the staff to create a group called "Coyote Haters Club" and add anyone who wants to be in that group. Count me in! Second, they are a nuisance! They kill everything we try to hunt! So yes I am in objection to to those damn hell dogs killing deer, rabbits, squirrels, turkey and every other game animal I pay to hunt for! So yes I say let us have an all year season with no bag limits and this might seem harsh, but kill the pups too. If you want to get rid of cockroaches you don't just kill the one you saw in the sink. You have to annihilate the nests! Or the infestation will grow. Then again, maybe you are pro roach to.3 points

Seeing no poults at all this year so far. Did find a few nests that were destroyed in May and a few hens that were killed. We have fisher around now, as well as the usual fox, coyote, coon and other assorted varmints. Not sure what the biggest issue is. Perhaps it's a perfect storm combination of all of them.2 points

Started my backsplash at camp... still need to grout... found thins nice tile with trout on it so I incorporated it into the backsplash.2 points

From what I've seen of the science, once coyotes enter an area, they will continue to reproduce until you have a problem, whether they are hunted or not. Hunting them will not control them as quickly as one would hope, especially if year round hunting isn't allowed. But every indication points to the fact they must be controlled by aggressive hunting once they invade a given area, otherwise they will surely become a major problem. The question becomes, how many in a given area becomes a problem? I believe that can only be answered by the inhabitants of that particular area.2 points

I think the last 2 pics are of daddy. Looks to be a much bigger bear than momma with the cubs. Any opinions on how big daddy might be? Thought I'd add a video of the 2 cubs fighting/playing with each other.2 points

That's something I should try and learn to do better. Fortunately my father in law is very good at it. Last year he gave me an antique Buck folder that he had sharpened up so I could almost shave with it at the start of the season. Field dressing (3) bucks and skinning (4) has taken most of the edge off it now however. I really struggled with it when I dispatched the poor little button buck that a hit and run driver knocked the wind out of at the end of our driveway last winter. I think I will give it back to him for a little "touch-up", prior to using it this fall. I like that knife but am not overly impressed with how well it holds an edge. Maybe I can convince him to carry it, especially when I remind him that it was used on the buck that made the nice shoulder mount he currently has hanging up on his wall up there. Personally, I don't believe in that "Luck" crap. It is the man up stairs who has full control, determining where all the deer end up. I do appreciate a tool that does its job well however. This fall, I will carry another classic that my wife picked up for me at an antique show this spring. It is another classic, an "old-timer" by Uncle Henry. It is a "made-in-USA" version and appears to be in factory un-used condition. Them things were legendary for holding an edge and I cant wait to get it into a few fat does. It also is so sharp now that I could shave with it. I lost my "Sharp-finger" a few years ago, that had been my favorite hunting knife and really held an edge well. I will try and be more careful with this one.2 points

I have two different groups of 3 pups (based on coloration) and 118 trail cam pictures for the 2 mos I've ran cams in 2015. 8g is where I am at. We try to shoot everyone but typically only get/call 2-3 a year. The it season should be open year round and limiting when they can be called and harvested makes no sense. Good luck2 points

Here in 4h, we are surrounded by AR's. Only a matter of time now before they implement them here. I usually let the young bucks walk now, but I can see where the choice should be up to the individual hunter. Especially the older new hunters coming into hunting. To old for the youth season, they are building experience and confidence in their hunting abilities. Just like any new hunter. The young bucks and doe's fit for that nicely. Then later in their hunting career they can choose not to shoot the young one's or just continue to put meat on the table. We should have a choice when we pay for the tags!2 points

When did I know I had a coyote problem? When the dog started spending more time barking at the windows running from one end of the house to the other at night rather than sleeping. Hitting the outside lights at 3am constantly reveals the pack. Gonna be a BIG trapping/hunting season this fall.2 points

The used bow advice may work out ok but the bow must fit you properly. No one can tell you your draw length by measuring your wingspan, in case some one tries that.. You'll have to know whether you're gonna shoot fingers or release n which type. Your DL wil be different with all, even as you simply change releases. You also need to know dominant eye to shoot proper "hand". The bow should not be super performance, they're best for experienced shooters1 point

You and your science has been proven wrong my friend. You call all out war on them things and they will be eliminated one way or the other. They either pack their bags and move or they learn to move only under the cover of darkness, Keep their mouths shut and jump from stump to stump so they dont leave tracks. If the Op leaves those things and does nothing he will have no game to worry about for him or his buddies.1 point

First week of turkey season, finding turkey egg shells in the favorite turkey nesting spots. Counted 21 poults with 2 hens yesterday. Quite a few poults for two hens. May have missed a hen. Starting to use their summertime roosting spot. Largest numbers ever here. Excited and can't wait to get some pics. Worked on habitat improvement here, for several years. I would hope something I've done has helped. Not taking any credit yet though.1 point

The coyote is one of the most adaptable creatures on the planet. It has no natural enemy besides the wolf. The coyote is one of the last mammals to live when the world comes to its end they speculate. If your looking for a real challenge try calling them in the East. The ratio for a call in is about 1 to 15 calls/sets for pro in the East. There aren't a lot of coyote hunting videos produced in the East due to lack of response, population and they're more skittish than their western species.1 point

I'm not a beginner but the Hoyt charger is a hell of a bow for the money. Get to an archery shop and they will have you shoot Multiple bows in your price range. I'd suggest new for your first bow in order to get fitted and all set up.1 point

PR arm of the DEC? Come on.....NY Outdoor News has regularly criticized DEC on many levels.....license system, various deer management issues, staffing, etc. Had to check in on this one...now, back to work... S1 point

Go to an archery shop to let them figure your draw length. Tell them your price range and then actually shoot as many bows as you can. Let the bow pick you. You'll know when you have the right one. As said above, don't worry so much about brand, concentrate on fit and feel. A good pro shop will also help with arrow selection for the bow and accessories like type of release. A well established shop will have the expert advice to help you get going on your bow hunting journey. Good luck and check back to let us know how you made out.1 point

Because it is not really about buck management. Simply a political shell game. Watch the pea (the yearling buck.) The real goal is to reduce the deer herd, as was done in Pa., down now 40% in 10 years and headed lower. The buck zones with the highest deer population will see the most restrictive ARs. Hunters will not be able to shoot bucks there so they will whack the does. Simple. Mark my words. The deer population will tumble in the Lake Plains and Finger lake buck zones, just what the DEC wants.1 point

There is almost universal agreement that if anything, WMU size is too big to handle the diversity of deer numbers, and all the different habitat conditions, for proper management. So what does the DEC do? .... They establish a mere 7 management areas when it comes to buck management. Somebody want to explain to me the logic behind that? I don't get it.1 point

Out of the three I would go with the Franchi 20ga. A lot of the Spanish made guns are good but I would be leery of a brand I never heard of. Something seems screwy with the Browning, and 16ga ammo can be hard to find. Franchi is a good quality gun and 20 ga ammo is everywhere. Good luck.1 point

Some nice deer in that whole area! I doubt you will have a hard time selling it for a profit. Even with no power. I still wouldn't do to much, maybe clear the area for a driveway/parking area and let the next owner decide what to do. They may not even want to put a camp on the land. Just hunt it. So the less you do the more if that makes sense.1 point

True and fairly common? Someone here is suffering from cognitive dissonance alright, but not the folks who understand the connection between politics and quality of life, for hunters as well as everyone else. Hunters who like to think of themselves as possessing a superior mindset to all of their hunting peers, especially the ones who constantly try to elevate their status in their own minds by stepping on everyone else, are suffering from a serious superiority complex that has no justifiable foundation. It's a fairly common malady, but it doesn't represent millions of hunters. Even if an overwhelming majority supports a lie, it's still a lie.1 point

I am more then happy if my groups are inside a half dollar. A quarter is great! A nickel I do somersaults in the woods. If they touch great, if not, like I said, a 3 shot group inside a half dollar ( or even 3 inches ) is fine by me. In my opinion, if you shot at the target 5 times and theres only one hole, you probably missed the target 4 times. Sorry, I had too add my 50cents. LOL Now back to your topic..............I apologize for this brief interruption.1 point

Going to have my 11 and 13 year old grandson's much more involved with my hunting this year. Especially the 11 year old, Zac. He is head over heels about hunting and anything to do with outdoors. He tells me that his idea of going green is wearing camo! Though he is too young to hunt deer,I want to shoot one with him with me this year. The three of us has been shooting bow and rifle and making natural ground blinds in our woods out back. Also a very generous member here, (phade), gave the boys a trail cam that they are excited about. We're hoping to go out tonight to see what they have on there. I have had over 40 hunting seasons. Killed many deer and a few nice ones. This year I'm giving back. To my grandsons, and any new hunter that could use a helping hand.1 point

Not sure where I read it...I read a lot...but a study done on turkey egg predation . Deer raid turkey nests and it isn't just a fluke type thing....I know they will eat baby birds and even frogs. Eggs should have occurred to me...1 point

I agree. This is the time of year when the fawns are still pretty vulnerable. So we should be able to kill them all year. Yup. Looks like at least 5 reasons to get some target practice in.1 point
