  1. It was so hectic trying to keep up with helping the kids, netting, reviving and releasing fish that I didn't get many photos. My wife took some. Below is my son yesterday and my daughter last week with grandpa and her silver. Pretty sure my wife has photos of my daughter yesterday but not on my phone: We fish every week but my daughter comes more often than my son. She is more of an outdoor sportsman and deadly with her 15lb recurve at 5 yds. Lol

  2. Took the kids and wife out fishing yesterday with my Dad. Since I wanted more action for the kids (6 and 13yrs old), we targeted lakers. Caught more than I could count in 2 hours including 3 triples. As soon as I set a rigger, it would fire and then the next and next. Kids got tired of reeling them in. Biggest was 14lbs. Definitely not like fighting kings and I know its a "lesser fish", but seeing the kids battle them was about as much fun as I have had fishing. Just when we were ready to start looking for kings, my wife looked a bit green from the sun and rolling water (she tends to get sea sick) so we headed in. Don't discount fishing mid-day. All this action was between 1-3pm.

  4. Just an update on yesterday......... My wife and I thought about going up to see her father in Waterport but with all the heat, humidity and lousy a/c we went to plan B. I sent Pygmy a quick PM and inquired if he and the Mermaid wanted to meet my wife and I down at the Mountain View in Atlanta NY for their family style chicken and biscuits Sunday only dinner. They agreed to go and we set a time of 4PM. Hmmm.......now what are my wife and I going to do on the way???? Well. a friend reminded me of a fine little spot down on the east side of Hemlock Lake (south of the south end), just north of Springwater called Reynolds Gully. It's a series of small waterfalls in ravine with some super steep walls. (you can Google more info) We made it to the spot around 2:00pm or so, made the hike up and had a blast! It is an awesome place to visit, easy 10 minute hike upstream and some gorgeous country to boot. After our hike we took a slow ride down to Atlanta and me up with Dan (Pygmy) & Sis (The Mermaid) at the Mountain View. Dinner was delicious and the company even better, we all left stuffed to the gills! After super Kathy and I headed up north past my uncle's old cabin in Naples, off Garlinghouse Rd. Then we stopped at my friends in Canadice for an after dinner vodka & tonic and a nice Macanudo cigar around the hot tub. (he was in, we weren't!) We made it home shorty after 9pm, fat and happy. The best birthday in years!

  7. I think the real problem is that they fail to see the importance of keeping hunters happy while still doing conservation a good service. Keeping the hunter population up has got to be in the equation... it makes a good management plan possible especially when population control is the goal. The DEC won't get far by pissing off any faction of the hunting population.

  8. They really are two entirely different kinds of hunts and I also like each one for their uniqueness. For me the bowhunting is a solitary kind of hunting that requires some heavy scouting and patterning of a relatively undisturbed deer herd with hopefully there still being a roughly repetitive feeding and bedding routine and some traditional rutting patterns that are again unbroken by excessive hunter activity. The bow is a short range weapon, so that the shooting distances are limited and requires a bit more solace and lack of interference. Gun season gets to be a more social event where friends and family gather for all the strategy B.S. sessions and the time when hunting partners go on joint excursions for stand locating and construction. And there are the pre-season target sessions for those that waited to the last minute to zero in those guns. And then there is the magic of opening day when the woods explodes with activity and all the shooting starts and that super anticipation that the orange army will push that deer in your expanded circle of gun range capability. It is quite exciting and all that stuff has its appeal too. Each form of hunting has its different styles of challenges and their separate kinds of fun and their separate kinds of requirements. And each style has certain aspects that interfere with the other. They were always kept separate because they are separate in all aspects and ways that they are conducted. I like them both, in their proper (and separate) times. Too bad the DEC doesn't have a clue about those differences or even care that there are differences.

  9. Not much I despise more than a scumbag thief. I feel bad for you having to go through this. Been through it myself many years ago. Still makes my blood boil when I think about it or see it happen to someone else. I really hope it works out for you and you get your stuff back. And I hope those rotten SOB's that stole from you die a painful death. And sooner rather than later too!

  10. Gun season is kind of fun in its own way because of that atmosphere. It just has no place in archery. Both seasons represent 2 totally different emotions and goals and strategies for me. It's what I really love about hunting. Just when I'm sick of the stick and string and scent control and deer just out of range, in comes the gun with pumpkins and their 870s in orange jump suits pushing deer right to me. Oh well I guess it'll all blend together soon.

  11. I havent talked to a bow hunter yet that is going to bother hunting the first 15 days this year. I wont be putting all kinds of pressure on my spots so I can let mature deer walk by, bust me and be more spooky for the rest of the season. Back to the old opening season date. In other words, the typical success rate and hunter numbers are going to plummet for two weeks.

  12. Bingo, nyantler.....I wrote about this in the Aug. 21 issue of NY Outdoor News....when hunters are THE management tool they need to be on board with any regulatory move in order to have it be a success....

  17. Bucks in a bachelor group 8/12/15. Starting to pay off by passing on small eights with bow and gun. Many of them will get whacked of course, but that is OK. Makes some other hunter happy! But if they get through to become 3.5 year olds, then they become literally something to shoot for. The small eight gets a free pass this year. If I need the meat, I'll shoot a spike or a yearling or a small doe.

  18. Eddie- It's not whether I can get a doe or even a buck that has me upset. It is simply the stupidity of the change, and the fact that the DEC seems to be going out of their way to single out bowhunters with the responsibility of maintaining deer population management (or else!). Their current attitudes toward bowhunters indicates that they really have a problem with bowhunters occupying some premium season time and intend to change that situation, which of course cannot bode well for anyone who enjoys the change of pace that bowhunting provides. I too have a pile of days to fill the freezer, but still the shoddy treatment and strong-arm tactics being used on bowhunters is pretty irritating to me. And so, I am not ok with it.

  19. Just something different in an effort to keep the board active with somewhat hunting related topics; Decided to cut up some old Whitetail antlers from various years sitting around for pen parts. I buy the actual metal parts as a kit, these are twist style and take a standard ink refill. A few disasters here and there for some losses, can be a difficult media to work with. They stink something aweful when sanding, they get a coat of super glue and then resanded for finish, everyone is unique. I sometimes make these for clients out of wood from chunks we remove during renovations; doing some Chestnut from trees that started growing in the mid 1700's next.....house was framed in 1817 best we can tell.

  20. Stopped into Walmart to pick up hunting license and noticed a little sheet hanging up on side of cooler with gun prices. After further inspection it was a huge sale with guns marked down up to 60% off! I ended up getting the Savage 220 20 gauge for $268 including tax. That was a 50% savings.

  21. I've used similar stands in the tree. if it's big enough I go to the crown where the trunk splits angling out and place the stand in the center as much as possible without getting to confined. idea is you use the others splits to the trunk as cover partly surrounding you and to brace your gun (hand) for the shot. also found you don't need a bigger platform as when you tip the stand back while leveling the platform it hunts bigger than it is. usually throw on an extra strap too. stability sucks with the more angle you've got.

  22. while I think the tag will be purchased anyway and used otherwise, don't forget participation in late season will be dismal. only those procrastinators or unlucky that still very much so need to freezer full will be out.

  23. Hunting from a tree stand has a lot of advantages, but the main one is being able to draw your bow with much less chance of a deer seeing you make the movement to draw and get into position to make a shot. I'll take a tree stand over a ground blind in most situations.

  24. Plenty of positives and negatives for both choices. If you're comfortable with being up in a tree, and with shooting from there, it's a good way to see more game and keep your scent and movements from being detected. Being up in a tree keeps you anchored to a spot as well. If I'm in a ground blind I'll get antsy and probably start moving by 9:00 or 9:30. I've shot a lot of deer between 10 and noon just because it wasn't easy to walk away from the tree stand. ;- ) Whichever you choose, practice shooting from it before the hunt! You have to be very confident that you can make the shot. You owe it to the animal, and to yourself. Best of luck to you this season.

  25. It all depends on the area you hunt. The places I hunt, there are natural elevations and natural cover that I can hide in. I prefer the ground more because I like to move. I'll sit still all morning. Mid-afternoon, I'll stalk. Late afternoon I'll sit again at a different spot. The areas that I hunt are more pressured so the deer tends to shift patterns every once in a while so I adjust. I have a spot, a backup spot, a backup to my backup spot and a backup to my backup to my backup spot, etc. A climber (I hunt public lands) is just too much of a hassle to go up and down the tree repeatedly. I use the climber only if I am hunting a spot where there is no natural cover or I can't get a clear shooting lane. You have to know the layout of the land, the behavior of the deer and adjust accordingly.

  28. Ground blinds can be created yourself. All you need to do is bring some brush that matches the area and basically make a fort with shooting lanes. You can chop some of the woods in the area (Private land only) to get limbs and branches to cover your area up. Then you only need a good seat. You can do this in many area's to play the wind and cost is very little, you can make them permanent and do not have to take them down. Wear gloves to keep scent to a minimum. Tree stand are great for viewing deer, your scent is higher. If you choose this route please be safe and use a safety harness and tether system, especially if you are solo. If you get a stand, set up a target under it at different ranges to get use to shooting down. If you can afford a tree stand they have many advantages over a blind. But blinds can be made for free and you really only need a seat and can set up a few area's with very little cost. I would do the blinds first.

  30. You just have to learn how to work the system. Apply for 4A for your first choice. If you don't get it, at least you built a point for next year. For your second chance, apply for somewhere with a higher chance like 4F. Prefrence points only get used on the first choice, but count towards both choices. I have been building PP for a few years by applying to 4A where I cant get a DMP (Non Resident) and still getting a DMP every year. This year put me over the 3 PP limit, so next year I should actually be able to draw 4A if I was to apply for there even though I'm a Non Resident.

  35. Have to remember, food plots and land improvements benefit multiple generations of deer over the span of years, so better spread that "cost" over more than one season.

  39. Which of course is the whole point for me. There is no way I will go afield with a bow if the countryside is ringing out with gunfire. Bow only works if there is a quite pre-gun period. I would be OK with a shorter bow season if it came down to it, but that is an entirely different proposition. Bow and accessory manufactures will be pissed I imagine, if Bow season is effectively snuffed out.

  41. I posted a deer/fireworks shot that was captured by a friend in a small group that is active in cam development and use. Every so often a good challenge presents itself, like the fireworks. We had alot of time to talk about it and prepare. This time, the Perseid meteor shower came up yesterday morning. I didn't have much time but did what I could to try to capture a meteor. Alot of cam settings won't allow for manual operation (longer shutter namely), so there was alot of talk of taping arrays, removing filters, shining a flashlight at the cam but out of the FOV. Short on time, I set the cam up with the best settings I could. So far, I am the only one who has caught a meteor in the group, albeit not a real nice streaking shot we all aimed for. Next year!

Pics are cool, but I depend on the meat too. I never thought that 56 yo would be my cutoff. Roll with what ya' got an' make the most of it.

  46. What is a "Smart Rifle"? Regarding the cams, I think people really over-estimate the advantages. Drones ..... watch out for these. I think they have a much larger potential for mis-use than most people can even imagine. That's funny that such things would be made into law by a state that has the motto "Live Free or Die" ..... lol.
