  4. I'll tell you...last night Angel pawed my back ...when I didn't respond she slowly climbed up and straddled me,then laid down between me and the edge...She was quaking, shivering, whining...I turned and held her thinking it could be a heart attack. I tried to comfort her...and thought I heard her give a high whine every once in a while...then my brain woke up and I realiized the whines were evenly spaced and she wasn't settling down and her nose was wet and cold...She was also on high alert though shaking...Our carbon alarm was going off...I went down stairs...mind you Mr B still sound asleep..to check burners on gas stove all our windows were open..I finally woke Mr B...the batteries were low...Angel and I took a moon light stroll while he fixed it...She slept under his side of the bed and settled down finally 2:44 am...Now that is a good dog We had slept through the low battery beeping and she wasn't going to let anything happen to us in our sleep...

  6. I'm a 20 yard and under guy. Yes, I have 30, 40 and 50 yard pins, but those are for paper. When I feel the need to test my archery skills, I have a target range for that. I used to love the 80 yard walk-up on the NFAA field archery, especially with the recurve. My bowhunting features hunting skills that measure how close I can get to a critter not how far away I am forced to settle for. That's where the excitement and challenge of bowhunting are for me. I have gun season and a rifle for the long-range meat gathering....lol.

  8. Coons can be pretty bold and curious especially if there's food around. I've seen a few that were obviously terribly sick, but that one looks like he still has his senses about him. The only thing that doesn't look right is he's not splattered on a street with 4 other members of his family, lol

  9. Up until a few years ago I usually always used open sights including with my own 1895g. Then my eyes got old and I was forced to put on optics. As long as your your comfortable with open sights, I say go for it. I always thought it was quicker to get on target and easier to follow what was happening after the shot.

  12. I just planted a 1/2 acre of winter peas, forage oats and clover yesterday 9/8.. I have never planted winter peas before, does anyone have any experience with these? as in if they need a frost to release sugars (like the faorage oats and brassicas) before deer will eat them or do they hit them as soon as they starting growing? just looking for an idea on what to expect. and what not. these are on a brand new, never worked plot.. i tried to set up as a "staging area" close to bedding, about 70 yards in the woods from my soybean field, this is actually still damp and moist, considering the "drought" this pass month and a half.. thanks for any info!

  17. I have an H and R 12 g single shot that I used when tracking for Deer Search. It has just a single bead for sights. It has put down quite a few deer that jumped up in front of me that were already wounded. Most all of the other trackers used a handgun. But the shotgun was light and easier for me to to swing on target for quick shots. I also painted the bead blaze orange, to help with a quick target accusation. And practiced shooting this way quite a bit. I also custom made a two point nylon sling that kept it out of the way but I could reach back with my left hand to bring on target very quickly.

  18. hunting with iron sights had been the norm for a very long time. As with anything else if you practice it will be fine. as a kid there wasn't a gun in deer camp with a scope on it other than one sporterized mauser. now every gun in camp has one other than when i take out my 16ga. changing times i guess.

  22. Most of my bow hunting is done in tight quarters and the shots are almost always slam dunks of under 20 yards. I have shot three between 37 and 42 yards, but they were all shots where the deer came from an odd ball direction. My only miss came at 34 yards with a thick, bare branch right in line with the deer. I thought, due to practice, that my arrow would go into the vitals after arcing over the branch. Thought wrong and found out broadheads don't come out of wood very easily, if at all. I don't even know how many deer I have killed with bow, but If you set up right, and play the wind, and stay relatively calm, you can get nice easy shots. Don't be in a hurry. I think shooting too soon is one of, if not the biggest reasons for misses with bow or gun. Have your shots planned out before a deer comes along. And, think out scenarios where the deer doesn't do what you think it will. Every year, I have some nice bucks in range, that never get shot at because they stay in cover or are moving too fast. Big deal. My life goes on, and if I do nothing to spook them, I usually get another chance at them.

  26. The deer and wildlife have been hammering the apple tree next to my food plot. It's Been my most active location for the last month. Glad to see the buck I'm after has made some more daytime visits. 27. I think the concern is justified. Any animal that is acting unusual should be avoided. Yes, from those two pictures he looks healthy enough, but rabies doesn't always have visible symptoms at first glance.

  28. I am lucky to live in the country where I can walk out back and shoot daily. I practice with broadheads out to 50 yards. Most of my deer have been taken at under 25 yards and my setups are in thicker cover. I've taken very few shots over 30. Everyone has a different skill level, but I think one really needs to put a lot of time in and know his/her equipment to shoot the longer distances. A range finder is a must past 20 yards. Also, shooting a bow from a treestand with hunting cloths on, and the adrenaline pumping is very different from shooting relaxed at the range in a tee shirt.

Will start my slow walk to my stand prolly about a hour and a half before first shooting light. 30 min walk and then a nice hour of silence in the stand before I can see

  32. Well I decided to make the switch from Hoyt to Bowtech. Been a Hoyt shooter for 10 years now...decided to try something else out. Got me a Bowtech Carbon Knight. Man what a sweet bow it is so far! Crazy light and absolutely dead in my hand after the shot. Amazing speed as well! If anyone out there is considering a carbon knight I highly recommend it! I put on a Throphy Ridge Revolution drop away rest and a HHA single pin sight. The HHA sights are awesome. Sight in your 20 and 40 yard and you can use a pre made yardage tape they supply you that has all your yardage markers set out to 80 yards. And it's dead accurate too!! Anyone else have a carbon knight or have any experience with them? I'm hoping this bow will last me a couple years First pic doesn't have my drop away or HHA on yet. I bought it with the R.A.K. package but I didn't care for the hostage rest or the multi pin sight so they were taken off after my first 30 shots. Second pic is my grouping at 50 yards the first time testing the yardage tape that HHA supply's you after you calibrate by using their site in method. These were shot with less than 50 shots total on the bow. Still have plenty of time to spend dialing in my form with the new bow but I was impressed at the grouping so early on. Never could group and bow this well at 50 yards on my first try at that range with a new bow.

  33. I agree with not caring who shoots what at what ranges. I just don't agree with being told that long range shots are a "no-no". That's just totally false. Anyone who believes this is simply closed minded and that's truly their personal preference. Just don't label those who do as "wrong". No matter your range skill level. Everyone should be practicing so they are confident they can take a animal humanely. Doing anything less than that would be unethical which I'm sure no one here stands for. Either way we can all agree to disagree on some things. All in all I hope everyone on here has a VERY successful season and good times with their friends, families and themselves! Good luck to all! Let's get some BBD pics up soon!

  34. Was gonna offer my 2015 Evolution up for you to test out, but I see now you bought a knightmare. You couldn't have gone wrong with either the Elite or Obsession. Six of one, half dozen of the other. Both great bows that shoot amazing. Like you, I liked the obsession a little more. It's a legit tack driver. Chiefbkt

  36. https://sustainabledevelopment.un.org/post2015/transformingourworld This is agenda 21 on steroids. For those of you who aren't familiar with agenda 21, you'd better wake up. This isn't conspiracy theory. It's real & it's happening now. The words "sustainable" "equitable" "transformative" "collective" etc, should scare the crap out of you. "We are determined to take the bold and transformative steps which are urgently needed to shift the world onto a sustainable and resilient path." "We pledge that no one will be left behind." "11.1 By 2030, ensure access for all to adequate, safe and affordable housing and basic services and upgrade slums" "17.1 Strengthen domestic resource mobilization, including through international support to developing countries, to improve domestic capacity for tax and other revenue collection" The above is just a hint of what lies in this agenda. The goals may sound nice to the ignorant person, but the underlying meaning and the implications for all of us are terrifying. If you don't want to believe or hear about this stuff, that's fine, it's too late for you anyway. Don't bitch though, no one is forcing you to read this thread. Go climb back under your rock.

  37. Most older folks don't care because it may not become obvious to them before they die. They don't seem to be concerned with the issues their offspring will suffer with though. I hear a lot of grand parents telling their grand children what a great country this used to be. That's sad.

  40. My first hunt on one of the farms will be Oct 16th in the evening. That one I know for sure. I have a spot that I used to hunt all the time where I may sit a couple of times during the first 2 weeks, but I wont be putting in much of an effort. I dont care if I blow that spot out.

  42. I have been literally feet from all kinds of deer on the ground without being detected over the years and never with anything covering my face. Some years maybe some facial hair, but I've never found the need for a face cover myself. My Italian olive oil and garlic colored skin seems to blend in well with the natural surroundings... LOL. However, I don't see how covering ones face can hurt at all. Whatever makes you feel more invisible and gives you some confidence can't be a bad thing.

  45. Steve Phade, another hunter and I often hunt together. I cannot imagine a situation where we would be fighting over who killed a deer. I would be happy to finish one off for one of them (and its still their deer) and I am sure vice versa. If that is really a concern, I agree that hunting alone is a better option, but if you are hunting with friends it should be a non-issue. Forget first fatal shot, if a friend wounded a deer and I finish it, its his (whether the first shot would be fatal or not). That's what a friend does.

  46. What's the matter. Just because you can't hit anything at long ranges means no one can? I always shoot to 100. Makes close range shots a breeze. I shot my antelope at 88 yards. Hard to get close to a lot of western animals so being capable of hitting them at long range is a must. I practiced for months before that hunt and made sure I was rock solid as I don't like wounding anything just like anyone else. I'm young with better than perfect vision (thanks lasik!) and have been practicing to 100 yards for 6 years now. Never said I'd take a high risk hail marry shot at 100 through dense forest. But on a feeding deer in a open field with no wind. Yep I'm letting a arrow fly. With today's new bows why does this seem like a ridiculous feat? Not only does practicing at long ranges make you a better shooter in general it makes the way more common shorter range shots much easier. But the biggest thing is the confidence boost you get
