It's a cool, crisp 46 degrees with wisps of clouds and no wind. What a great image to wake up to. [emoji41] [emoji41] - Deerthug10 points

Figured Id share a few entertaining videos from one of my cams. The first tow are of a fawn that saw its reflection in the black flash lens of my cam. Its reaction is great! This one I thought was kinda funny to catch4 points

Got a late start this year. Didn't put any cams out until I put 2 cams out on Labor Day (9/7). Same 8 acre property we always hunt in 3N Putnam county. The 2 cams are about 200 yards apart, one is the trail I watch when I hunt from my spot and the other is the trail my dad watches when from his spot. One 8 point looks pretty nice and I got lots of daytime pics of him, from both cams. Wondering if maybe he's the 8 point we had pics of last year. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk3 points

I'll be dipped,I was at my buddies house shooting rifles today and after we finished ,I decided to walk out to my stand and check things out. The stand is 40 yards into the woods off the field ,and I take one step onto the path and I'm now staring eye to eye with a doe at 20 yards . I was talking to her and taking pictures until I realized that I was just gonna walk away and not spook her. If she had thumbs ,she would have stuck them in her ears and stuck her tongue out at me.3 points

Stands...I moved one that was where the new blind is...the 2nd from the bottom rung has bulged out and split length wise...I will have to assume the very cold weather and deep snows got water in the tubing ...that kept freezing and building up..the extreme cold weakened the steel tubing causing this....keep a close eye on those rungs and the welds...Best of luck and may this be a safe season for everyone...2 points

To the guys who want a minimum.point , how many deer have you shot in your career hunting that would.not make a point policy if it was in place then? How may deer did you shoot where you counted the points before you shot? Just wondErin as I know I have shot most of my bucks without counting points and have a couple dozen that would not of.made a point minimum or given me a chance to count before I shot, each of them hold a fond memory for me though, I would hate to deny the chance for someone to make a memory for themselves because I wanted something bigger....2 points

Our phone at home looked like a black dial phone, but did not have a dial on it... We'd pick up the receiver and the operator would come on the line and say " Number please".... My home number was 242-M1.... My first love's number was 416-J... We were on a party line, as were many people because private lines were more expensive...Our ring was one long...Neighbors knew each other's rings and the local busybodys would pick up there phone and listen in on your conversation... Of course with mine, usually all they would hear was heavy breathing....<<grin>>....2 points

Then you should be fine. I don't think nerves care if you're using iron sights, red dot, or scope. When nerves wants to screw you over, it will. That said, I also say my groups (including the flyer) are doubled in real world conditions just as a general rule of thumb. i.e. if my groupings are 2 inches with the flyer, then I'm probably shooting 4 inch groups when nervous. Of course that's just my own personal rule of thumb and not a scientific fact. I include the flyer because Murphy's Law says that's the shot you'll take when the moment counts.2 points

The deer and wildlife have been hammering the apple tree next to my food plot. It's Been my most active location for the last month. Glad to see the buck I'm after has made some more daytime visits. Hope he continues this while I'm in my stand! http://i952.photobucket.com/albums/ae8/Chiefbkt/Mobile%20Uploads/BFE74502-309A-40BA-8FC6-785D0EE54B14_zpsr1micrwq.jpghttp://i952.photobucket.com/albums/ae8/Chiefbkt/Mobile%20Uploads/FF357CE2-E463-40A3-9213-F3D774DB9386_zpsztakluw4.jpghttp://i952.photobucket.com/albums/ae8/Chiefbkt/Mobile%20Uploads/6719EC39-2988-45F9-AE93-A036EB0030B9_zpsyqz8rpke.jpghttp://i952.photobucket.com/albums/ae8/Chiefbkt/Mobile%20Uploads/0670A65A-D3B4-49A8-AFC8-0D0C2EAE9CD4_zpscxcmxv3s.jpghttp://i952.photobucket.com/albums/ae8/Chiefbkt/Mobile%20Uploads/3E95BB0A-EDFA-4F66-BCE5-3DB8DCC491AB_zpsnixn73rv.jpghttp://i952.photobucket.com/albums/ae8/Chiefbkt/Mobile%20Uploads/83349E73-97CC-4537-BB47-259F60CF9A0E_zps4zj04022.jpghttp://i952.photobucket.com/albums/ae8/Chiefbkt/Mobile%20Uploads/6B591602-A391-4786-B649-5857D5E7A5E3_zpsyoluquir.jpghttp://i952.photobucket.com/albums/ae8/Chiefbkt/Mobile%20Uploads/D35AE6A9-0720-46F9-9CDA-1B420DA27157_zps2sqcwknw.jpghttp://i952.photobucket.com/albums/ae8/Chiefbkt/Mobile%20Uploads/0F799388-1AC8-441C-A2CE-96122D9E4C23_zpsrzx1jmmn.jpghttp://i952.photobucket.com/albums/ae8/Chiefbkt/Mobile%20Uploads/D0CE031C-14CB-4B83-9DDD-C285F4DFB114_zpslsoi4oc7.jpg Chiefbkt2 points

Looks like the skies will be clear and the temps comfortable tonight. You won't get another chance to see an event like this until 2033, so don't miss out on this one! No telescopes or binoculars required, either. Just step out and look up. https://www.nasa.gov/feature/goddard/nasa-scientist-sheds-light-on-rare-sept-27-supermoon-eclipse A shadow will start at a little after 8:00, and the moon will gradually turn dark reddish-orange for the duration of the event with the full eclipse occuring shortly after 10:00 and running until about 10:45. Edit: Got the time wrong. The shadow starts at a little after 9:00.1 point

I saw a bruiser of a buck on a good buddy of mine's farm last week. Over the weekend I helped move a stand and set up a camera hoping to get a better look at the big guy. Due to his hectic farming schedule my friend gets no free time this time of year so I've been checking his cam for him. Lo and behold the buck were are after showed himself this morning. Not much mass...but everything else looks pretty darn good!!!1 point

Pretty sure this is wrong. They changed things up this year. That used to be the way but as far as I've been told by like 10 different people that's not the case anymore.1 point

Took the kids and wife out fishing yesterday with my Dad. Since I wanted more action for the kids (6 and 13yrs old), we targeted lakers. Caught more than I could count in 2 hours including 3 triples. As soon as I set a rigger, it would fire and then the next and next. Kids got tired of reeling them in. Biggest was 14lbs. Definitely not like fighting kings and I know its a "lesser fish", but seeing the kids battle them was about as much fun as I have had fishing. Just when we were ready to start looking for kings, my wife looked a bit green from the sun and rolling water (she tends to get sea sick) so we headed in. Don't discount fishing mid-day. All this action was between 1-3pm.1 point

Replace a Lost Certificate Call 1-888-HUNT-ED2. You will be asked for your name, date of birth, type of course you took and when and where you took the course. Other State Certificates New York State accepts Sportsman Education Certificates from other states when purchasing a sporting licenses. Certificate Requirements in Other States and Countries: To verify whether a New York State Sportsman Education Certificate is accepted elsewhere, visit the International Hunter Education Association (External Link) to find certificate restrictions and requirements in all other states and countries. Many states and countries will require to see your hunter education certificate and will not accept your hunting or trapping license as proof of a certificate. Found this on the DEC site "Sportsmans Edcuation" page, hope it helps. Jaeger1 point

We're out this morning in Naples. 2 greys and a red so far. White oaks are dropping acorns like crazy. There were a lot of squirrels out this morning, but it's slowing down now. I'm proud of him, he got 3 reds and a grey yesterday. The kid's a diehard.1 point

That's funny. I'm either adding some more webbing as those seats are pretty comfortable or making a wood top that I can carry in an and out. Avoid droppings and ice that way .1 point

Ahh, the old adapt or perish adage applied to aging hunters. Goes much deeper than just failing vision, like long hikes to the stand, moving treestands. length of sits, tolerance to bad weather conditions, long drags, on & on.... And my nemesis, a weak bladder!1 point

No joke. I'd take that shot on a deer. I shot a doe at 56 yards last year and never thought twice about it. I have a speed bow and shoot thousands of arrows a year at long range. If I didn't shoot as much as I do I wouldn't even consider it.Chiefbkt1 point

I've done 50 and 100 with my 44 lever action with a red dot on paper with no problem and stayed within 4 inches but paper and live are two different things. If I had a bad shot on paper I wouldn't care but just wanna make sure I don't make a bad shot on an animal. I guess I'm just a lil nervous to do it for the first time. Imma be doing as much practicing as I can over the next 2 months.1 point

Before I get into my ranges let me say this...a ethical shot can only be judged by the shooter. No one has the same skill set as each other. That's just human nature...we are all different and we all practice and train ourselves differently. Kinda like a Army sniper vs me with my half ass sighted in 30.06. We both are essentially doing the same thing (well our targets may be different lol) but our skills and training are MUCH different. With that being said I will shoot an animal out to 100 yards with conditions being as perfect for me as they can get. Little to no wind, no obstructions in the way, animal is feeding or laying down with very little motion one way or another. Some will say this is crazy but it's really not. It doesn't take half as long as you think for an arrow to travel that far. Being from NY and growing up here I never used to shoot past 50 yards until I ventured out west to get into guiding for a living. That's when long ranges really became part of my shooting and training. If anyone thinks they are gonna go out west on a hunt of a lifetime and only shoot to 20-30 yards they are going to be very disappointed when they realize getting that close to a western game animal is very difficult and sometimes just not possible depending on 100 different reasons. When I got the opportunity to go hunt for antelope the first thing I was told was to become deadly accurate to at least 80 yards and that being accurate to 100 was much better. This was my first experience hunting out west and I thought they were crazy but after months of practicing on a daily basis to 100 I was amazed at the confidence I had as an archer. Honestly I kinda gave up gun hunting after this. Yes it's hard but it truly is awesome to challenge yourself like that. After spending a few years as a guide I've witnessed many animals taken at close and long range with gun and bow. I've watched guys screw up as many 25 yard shots as I have long ones. To me there really is no unethical shot based on range as long as it falls within your equipments capabilities and weather permitting. It always comes down to the shooter being capable of making the shot. I highly encourage everyone to break from their comfort zone and practice at long range with a bow. Even if you don't wish to hunt that way. Just practicing will make you a better archer which can only increase your success in the field! Not to mention it's just a lot of fun standing in the back yard betting dollar bills with your buddies on who can make the best shot at 80,90,100.1 point

I practice regularly from 10 to 60 yards. My effective hunting range is 30 yards. My longest kill shot was 37 yards, a few years ago. Most of my kills have been 20 yards or closer.1 point
-
My limit is around 20,less is more for me as I tend to get rattled easy. A slam dunk (yea freaking right!) is 12-13 yards and, once again, closer is desirable. Killed last years buck very close, 5 yards IIRC. 30, 40, 50? NFW..............................(for me)1 point
