  1. We have hunted the first 4 days of season for years.Sucks that we cant use last years tags anymore but we still went.I set up in a field corner and thicket edge and at 8am this guy came through and he gave me a hard quartering shot at 8 yards.I nailed him perfect. He went around 100-120 yards before piling up.First northern buck I've ever shot!!

  4. I had a friend come out few years ago and he got a beautiful 10 pt with bow on the day with the worst weather possible, we took lots of photos and won a contest or two. We went to a sportsman meeting and he was happily showing pics to everyone, I didn't really.look as I saw it and help.get it out and spent night drinking with him in celebration. So i was just sitting at bar, whe n another member sat next to me and says wow that's the last time he will be hunting your place huh! I looked at him kind of puzzled look, and he then said well he he took that big buck of my place I wouldn't have him back.. I looked right at him and said, I didn't invite him out not to shoot a deer, I hope he gets a world record off my place next year! I'd still invite him out to hunt! He looked sheepish at me got up and left, That was the first time in realized some people are just jelous antler crazy I don't have anyone like that in camp and I wouldn't hunt with someone like that either.

  7. I have said this before. If you are not happy with killing small bucks, become a better hunter. Not many areas in NY that don't have at least a few three and a half year old bucks. Perhaps hunting the OLD way just doesn't cut it anymore? Learn new skills, change tactics, become a better hunter. Older, bigger bucks are still out there! Changing DEC hunting regulations will not make you a better hunter!

  13. So regardless of all of the doe only controversy in my area, I am still getting anxious to sit in a stand. I am not even low on meat. I just am looking forward to a fun season. Fishing is over and my wife has already resigned herself to my absence for the next 3 months, so I guess I am ready. Need to get my 6yr old daughter in a double stand this year. She is looking forward to it. Hopefully we can make it exciting for her again like when phade knocked down 2 doe last year 2 minutes after I texted him that Natalie was ready "to go look for the deer."

  16. To each his own on how far he/she can shoot accurately, but even a bow slinging an arrow at 300fps (which most don't when set up for hunting) takes a full second for the arrow to travel 100yds or 3/4 of a second for the arrow to travel 75yds from release. This doesn't account for the arrow slowing down in flight which means real life is longer. That is a lot of time for a deer to move between release and hit/miss. I think that unpredicted movement is the biggest factor that weighs against long shots. It doesn't matter how proficient/accurate you are with a bow, that risk remains. I know its done out west regularly and maybe that is a risk they can/must take due to the style of hunting.

  17. If thats all hes using it for, Id go used. Look into an ATV with an engine brake. My side by side has it, and going down hill is super easy, unless its a really steep grade, I dont even use the brakes. For a trailer, just a standard 4x8 with a drop gate would be fine for a single ATV. If you want a side by side or to haul more than just the wheeler on there, then go bigger, like a 6x10. Im not sure if theres a Tractor Supply store down near you, but they sell them for a pretty low price. Any trailer dealer will have them.

  19. A 160? Same thing that happens when a 120 is shot or an 80. If a friendship or hunting buddy is proportionally related to the size of the rack to be had, it's not likely a friendship at all. But if the scenario presented and I knocked down a 200" deer Moog or the other hunting partner shot first, that was a "lifetime buck," I'd probably be giving some major BS about how I have to do the dirty work for someone shooting low all the time or shoulder punching (depending on the partner, lol. I'm guilty of being known for a liver shot from time to time). Then I'd grab an antler and help him drag his buck out and we all celebrate and let the women in our lives know not to expect us home anytime soon. I guess the allure of getting worked up over a big buck being shot by someone else in my group alludes me. And, just as an FYI, we've already lived this a time or two with the amount of deer we are fortunate to shoot. It's a non-issue. I just feel like I need to respond when people question these scenarios in "general" or hypotheticals because it really make me wonder why hunters have a hard time with a scenario like this to begin with. It's the difference between sitting in your stand, and seeing your hunting buddy walking up the trail to your stand at an odd time with a crap-eating grin on his face and thinking before he gets to you, "Oh man, I hope he got a big one," vs. "Oh man, I hope he didn't shoot my buck or the 160." If you even wonder about the latter rather than only thinking the former, you really need to look within. Give me a break.

  24. Stands...I moved one that was where the new blind is...the 2nd from the bottom rung has bulged out and split length wise...I will have to assume the very cold weather and deep snows got water in the tubing ...that kept freezing and building up..the extreme cold weakened the steel tubing causing this....keep a close eye on those rungs and the welds...Best of luck and may this be a safe season for everyone...

  25. Hey all. So this is more of a "I'm showing off" than anything else. But I wanted to show everyone my "upgrades" to my Summit Mini Viper SD. I ditched the big suspension seat for a Hazmore Silent seat(made in the USA) this thing is cool it sheds some weight and slides way back out of the way, so when you stand up you can stay close to the tree. I added a Third Hand Archery Universal Bow holder, and stabilizer straps(made in the USA). Next I had a guy at work mill me a bracket for my quiver that mounts to the stand. This holds my quiver down near my feet on the riser bar. Quiver just slides in with arrows facing upward, making my arrows accessible and ready to go should I need a second one. I also added a MOLLE frame, Shoulder straps, and a Lumbar belt...let me say that this set up makes carrying this thing a breeze, all of the weight is fully distributed across my back and waist. The stock Summit backpack straps were really lame IMO. Finally the Sherpa Game cart(made in the USA) kit that attaches to the stand and turns it into a game cart. Lastly I cut and added these furnature feet felt pads to the inside area where the cable meets...it reduced the metal clang that happens when they are snapped in place. Thanks for looking...I cant wait to get this thing in the woods this year.

  27. The deer in my avatar was arrowed at 55 yards. He still doesn't know what hit him. There's too many intangibles that go into someone's effective range, which can vary based upon the setting and animal as much as the skill and will. The problem is too many people try to quantify this topic to back ethics or vice versa, and it's really pointless because any generalization, personal experience, etc. is really only applicable to that person. If you believe you can make the shot, then that is an effective range, in my book. And, as an archer, you know whether you can make that shot or not. We all know the thought process that goes on when pulling a bow back on an animal.

  31. Polaris,Honda Yamaha, Kawasaki all make good machines. I too would look for a used machine under 500 cc and 4x4 is a must if the hill gets a little snow. Got a trailer at Tractor supply that will fit an ATV for about $500. You should be able to buy a used machine and trailer for under $5000. Craigs List always has a bunch on there. Good luck with your search.

  35. There was a span of a few years where my buddy and I would see the deer first, that the other shot. We had a saying, you spot em' and I shot em'. We share all info and stands on our properties. And whoever gets a buck first, will bust his butt to do every thing possible to make sure the other successful as well. Both he and I have put down or finished deer that the other has shot first. That included a couple of the biggest deer we have shot. Outside of a little ribbing on how the deer was able to make it to the other, there was NEVER a discussion over who's deer it was. I really am as excited and happy for him if he gets a nice deer as I am for myself. Sometimes more if he breaks a dry spell or shoots a buck we both have a history with. Hunting with my own brother and brother in law is not like this. They are the competitive types who feel they have to shoot the biggest deer. And have had "discussions" over dead deer. I hunt with them very little if at all anymore. Even though we share a property. Pretty sad really. Over what? A dead deer........ I am very much looking forward to the best hunt of my life. When my grandson Zach, shoots his first deer in a couple years. It's not what you take away from hunting. It's what you give back that matters most.

  37. I shoot a 2015 Obsession Evolution @ 70# and 29" draw, GoldTip Pro Hunter arrows with a 431 grain hunting set up. Should be plenty of down range KE with this set up. I am not out there bowhunting intentionally looking to take a 50+ yard shot. I would much rather have that 40 and under shot. I have 4 stands on field edges giving me wide open shots so if a deer is hanging up at 50, 60, or 70 yards, knowing I can make that shot is nice to have in my bag. Even then, to take a shot that far you have to consider the conditions, ie. deer body language. LIke I mentioned earlier, I shoot in all conditions and really like shooting on the high wind days to see my arrow flight. I have seen very little change in my arrow flight at 50+ yards on these windy days. This is cross wind, face in the wind, and down wind shooting. I am not perfect, I've made poor shots on deer at close ranges as have many of us bowhunters. That is why I shoot as much as I do, to help alleviate the chance of error in my shot.

  38. http://www.archerytalk.com/vb/showthread.php?t=2921290 While scrolling through the archery talk I came across this thread. First thing you'll notice is the guys awesome bull he harvested. Congrats to him for that. But upon reading his post I read how he shot it at 71 yards. After 5 pages of responses not ONE person mocked, questioned, doubted or bashed him for making such a long shot. Many congratulate him on his great marksmanship. Just funny to see the difference in responses compared to this forum. I'm sure it's because this is NY based so like I've said before, longer range shots just aren't a common thing here, but they are out west. Just figured this was ironically good timed proof

  41. Done!!!!!!...Wow that roof was a beast but Mr B and I got her on...I have to say...I'm a tad impressed,,,the frame dropped over the out side edges of the blind like a glove!I screwed the roof to the frame and the whole blind to the decking....I had to cut a wide enough path through the woods behind the blind for the Gator to drive through...then we used the tree branches and rope with the Gators winch to get it up and into position,,,,I then put the door frame on and nailed the siding to it...just need finishing touches and the windows to be made....I'll take pics tomorrow...let it rain let it rain...need to sweep it before I lay the carpet down.. the carpet is a soft indoor out door dark dark grey..I think I'll lay rubber roofing down before putting the carpet down...

  42. Honestly in my area of NY I think most of the idiots walk out back the day before deer season and take 2 shots and if they can hit a 55 gal drum at 20 yards they call it good... That's just my opinion tho Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk

  45. Integrity is what it is. You either have it or don't. The amount of horn doesn't matter. I truly believe this and if you aren't certain your friends are the same, you need new friends. BTW - the temptation to act contrary to what you know is right comes in many forms and a big buck is, by far, one of the lesser forms. Its a freakin deer. lol Note - Belo, not questioning your integrity, I just don't understand the idea that some big horns are going to cause an otherwise upright person to act without integrity. There are a heck of a lot of bigger temptations in this world than antlers.
