Well, I am officially tagged out here in NY until November! Filled my doe tag last week and got on this buck on the past Sunday. Here's the story: A few days ago I pulled my trail cam cards and got this guy on camera. Based on this picture alone, I wasn't sure if I was going to shoot this deer given the opportunity or not. My rule for bucks is 3 years or older and a lot about this picture said 2.5. Well, when I saw him in person I just couldn't let him walk by. I set up in one of my honey hole stands, a point that juts out into a swail grass swamp bordered by a beaver swamp. To my right the acorns were raining down and to my left was a loaded apple tree. About 45 min before dark, I heard a deer walking through the swamp in front of me. Shortly after, I saw a 10 foot tall tree get ravaged so I knew it was a buck, but I didn't know what yet. All I know is that he was taking it out on this tree because all I could see was the top of it swaying back and forth. Then he stepped into view and when I measured up this deer I decided I was going to take him if given the chance. His body, combined with his torn ears and the fact he was unique because Im not sure if ill ever see another 4 point as big as him were enough reason for me to want to take my first buck in three years. He was on a trail that would take him through my shooting lane for an easy 15 yard shot. Being that this is usually how my luck goes, the wind which had been blowing perfectly all day out of the southeast stopped just as this deer decided to stop for a few apples before stepping into the open. When the wind died, it gave the thermals flowing down off the hill behind me the upper hand and right to his location. Some people don't believe in scent control but I am a freak about it and this is one of those times it paid off. He wasn't a dumb deer, within minutes he knew something was up but it wasn't enough to blow him out of the area. However, it was enough for him to want to start heading back to where he came from. He took a few step back in the other direction, away from my shooting lanes, nose in the air and being very cautious. I desperately searched for an opening and I found it. It was the size of a bowling ball, all the way to his vitals at 20 yards. I had to kneel all the way down on the platform of my stand to make the shot. I stopped him perfectly in the opening and watched the arrow sink behind his shoulder. I knew he was done and thats when I lost my composure. Eating tag soup and passing bucks for three years makes this moment extremely surreal. When I walked up on this buck, I couldn't believe the size of his body. The jury is still out on whether he is a 2 or 3 year old buck and even some of the more seasoned reviewers I know are unsure. His face and rack scream 2 year old but his body is that of a solid 3 year old. I am having his jaw read next week. Anyway, here are some pics in chronological order. I will have a video out in a few days. Upstate NY Buck Age: 2 or 3 years old Weight: 178lbs dressed, over 200 live.22 points

I believe in staying to last light. You never know what may come along. There have been times when I thought everything was perfect and I get a big goose egg to show. Legally you should stop hunting at sunset in your area, some do some don't. This thread will turn into a pissing match about what I just said…lol. I personally don't watch the time, I'll call the day myself.10 points

Just saw this thread so I figure I would post mine up,September 27th,8am.Great shot ran a touch over 100 yards...towards truck thank god!!LOL9 points

This afternoon I went on my first hunt of this season with Grampy. While building a new blind we found 4 scrapes and fresh deer tracks very close to our blind. After finishing up our blind we went on our hunt. We sat out there for a few hours and saw nothing but a bunch of birds and squirrels.6 points

Broke the ice on a nice doe. First nite out and one in the books.6 points

The more you contaminate the area, the worse your chances are. If you get busted by a mature buck, you are far less likely to get another crack at him that season. Its a pretty simple concept, and you know it. You are just being a troll, trying to get peoples hackles up. Its your MO on here. Same as the thread you kept poking and prodding, posting nonsense trying to get it up to "50 pages". The number of P&Y bucks on your wall doesnt impress me much when you act like a douche bag.5 points

Yesterday morning I hunted some winery property basically just to take a trailcam down that I had setup a couple of weeks ago. Upon, checking the cam I was pleased to find a whole bunch of bucks hitting the white oak that my stand was set in. Two deer really caught my attention...one was a beautiful 9-pt and the other was a doe that looked like a football with legs... Since, my buck tag is filled I decided to try to hunt this fat doe. Taking a wise old doe like this is definately no easy task. She liked to hit the oak up around 6:00 every few nights with a couple other does. I had a little time to kill yesterday afternoon so I went after her. I arrived to my stand late at 5:15...literally two minutes later she steps out at 150 yds down the field and started working my way. Eventually, she ended up feeding right under me and I put a Rage Hypo through her at 10 yds... I may have to have her aged...she has lots of white on her face/muzzle and her legs. I think she's been around a while. I have to give he old girl credit for surviving the nuisance permit onslaught that happens here every summer... This would have been a nice pic with a better camera... So, that's a wrap for me for this bow season. I have one more DMP left but my freezer is pretty stocked now and I have no reason to fill it. What a season!!!4 points

Looks like somebody has been working out those neck muscles... My friend couldn't hunt saturday afternoon due to a wedding. Lucky for him, his sister in law didn't take her son out for the youth hunt that night...4 points

As long as the stand is there for a while, the deer will get used to it. I have never ever ever ever brushed in a ladder stand, and I cant tell you how many deer Ive killed out of them. Also, if you hunt it the same day they may not notice it until its too late. Like papist said, just dont put it right on the trail.4 points

Obviously you dont understand the concept of not contaminating an area, or possibly getting busted by a buck you are hunting that season when you cant kill him. Cracks me up that someone that has hunted for as long as you cant comprehend it.4 points

Last night's doe...probably the biggest and definately the oldest that I've ever taken.4 points

Oh and one tip when sharpening. If you take a sharpie and blacken the edge bevel , this will show you what part of the bevel is hitting the stone for proper alinement .3 points

I generally use a shotgun the first few times out in early season.. When I get a few packages of squirrel in the freezer, I switch to a rifle.. So far this year I've taken 17 with the 16 gauge, 9 with the Ruger 10/22, and 3 with my NEA .17 MachII.... Both my squirrel rifles are scoped..I have a Burris fixed 4X compact on my 10/22 and Leupold fixed 4X on the .17 MachII...3 points

Like it or not, no matter how great of a shot one is or how much we practice, eventually you will lose a deer. In my experience, a good blood trail that disappears is usually a muscle hit, sometimes the deer will die, sometimes it will survive. Sounds like you did everything you could to retrieve it, great effort on your part.3 points

Thanks DEC! I haven't gotten to squirrel hunt this much in years. This doe only season has really given us time to get back to it. Still my favorite animal to hunt.3 points

Been using up my venison in the freezer, and came up with this today. Take a section of backstrap, and split it in the middle enough to butterfly it out a bit (dont cut all the way through). Stuff the backstrap with jalapeno slices, diced onion, minced garlic and shredded cheddar jack cheese. Next, lay out slices of bacon into a sheet as long as your section of backstrap. Then lay the stuffed backstrap in the middle of the bacon. Sprinkle a bit of Montreal Seasoning on the bacon slices and wrap them around the backsrap until it is encased in the bacon. use toothpicks to hold it all together. Last, rub the outside of the bacon with a Memphis style BBQ rub. Heat up your smoker to 250 and smoke the wrapped backstrap for 3 hours using the wood of your choice. I used pecan and it turned out great.3 points

70 degrees, that's cause for one last fishing outing with my daughter. She caught a turtle and that trumped any casting for the day!3 points

I just basically did a phone interview with a company that approached me recently, after about 5 min the guy finally asked why I was whispering, when I told him he burst out laughing. He told me to get back to my hunt, get a big buck and that he would see me on Thursday. Hopefully he brings me some luck3 points

Had this guy eating acorns for 15 minutes five yds from stand. Doe came by with fawn and shot her at 6ish yards. Centered arrow with a nice X imprint on her heart.3 points

Hunted up in 3M and didn't see a single doe all day. moved from a bedding area to a spot where they were eating last year and sat for the night and STILL didn't see anything. So at about 6:00pm I decide with an hour hike out and a two hour drive ahead of me Im packing it in. So i set my bow down and the MINUTE a start to climb down a nice sized bear come strolling to my thirty yard line and stops when she hears me cuss looks at me and then runs down to a hill where i have a 40 yard shot and stops and looks at me. I am never leaving stand again till the sun has dropped below the horizon. been out every weekend even in the rain and havnt had any luck. but it all in all it was still a nice sit. First time seeing a bear from stand was cool.2 points

that makes it a nightmare to administer. Check in of taken does. issue the buck tags. I think they are taking a totally wrong approach in reducing opportunities and expecting a standing ovation. They should have been expanding opportunities if they wanted the program embraced. it would have caused hunters to migrate INTO the impact areas rather than AWAY from the impact areas. It really is simple. Over the counter purchase for those areas and it does not effect the regular doe permit draw. No limit. 9 day GUN season in the middle of September.2 points

No its great, more range of movement in fact. The tether doesnt end up across your neck if you have to turn a long way2 points

5g/lb is the minimum. I wouldn't go lower than you are. you wouldn't like see much difference in trajectory until after 30yds in any event. Then again, I prefer heavy arrows. 530g for 80lbs compound and 600g plus for 52lbs with the recurve.2 points

Thanks for the responses guys......The arrow was covered in blood from the tip to the fletch....there wasn't any trace of guts or waxy fat on the arrow. The hit was not a liver hit....the blood was not that dark..It was just not the bright color of lung blood. I have shot a deer in the liver with the rifle before. I also think if it was a liver hit I would have found the deer with the grid search we did and the time that had passed. The deer search guy could have said it was above the spine instead of below the spine. Coverage was spotty and I was having a difficult time hearing him on my cell phone from the woods but I was pretty sure he said below the spine....I don't understand how I blew the shot that badly to hit above the spine....I practice often and most of my practice is from my elevated deck to simulate the angles from the tree stand. I have never used lighted knocks....I am going to get some....I was unable to see the arrow flight and where it hit exactly. Maybe the knocks will help. Still mad at myself but I will be back out there for sure.....2 points

My first thought was liver too. Where are you located? Not that it will do you any good now, but Luna and I will travel an hour and a half from Waddington.2 points

Actually this may be a good time. There is no monetary pressure on him. Would be a good time to learn and just plain enjoy yourselves. Good year to teach him how to handle the fur and you wont pop a blood vessel if he messes up a hide.2 points

No I am not a tool of the States DEC...they are a tool used by the tax payers of this state to help manage the herd in a sound and productive manner. Not only hunting but for general population enjoyment and to aid in the lessening of the amount of state $$$$ given out for farm subsidies. It is the DEC that needs to be made accountable for years of mismanagement and producing an air of distrust amungst hunters.2 points

So I have been annoyed with cable costs for a while and this thread prompted me to finally give streaming a try. Went with a mofu antenna for local, and the roku 3 plus sling with HBO for the rest. Already subscribe to Netflix and amazon prime. Called yesterday and cancelled cable. Should save over $100/mo. Let's see how it works out. Gotta admit, I will miss the rest of the season of Homeland on SHO, but they seem to post it later on Netlfix so I can catch it at some point.1 point

So now more than angry I'm thoroughly fed up! So listen up. The DEC and some hunters had best pull their heads out and decide whether hunting in this state hunting is a privilege or a job. For if it is a job, which has been thrown out there more than once over this situation, than I want : 1. part of my lifetime license reimbursed 2. a percentage of the money farmers get for crop damage(our tax dollars) taken from them and given to hunters. So much per deer reported and a check at the end of season. 3. a state tax write off on all deer hunting equipement I have to use during the season Other wise I DO NOT want to hear that hunting is MY JOB! years of the same guys saying in pages and pages of arguments, hunting is a privilege...well it's one or the other you can't have it both ways!1 point

Not the best pic, I normally dont shoot Doe this early in the season, But this was one of those smart ole girls, Who picked me out over 50 yds away through the woods, The wind blowing from her to me and i had plenty of cover, She started the foot stomping and the head bobbing, then blew wind and took off, When she stopped a few bounds away i pulled out the can and gave her a couple bleats then hit the grunt call, She then proceeded to move closer to my position but stayed in the thicker brush; before coming out at right about 30yds she turned broadside and looked away, The shot was a little forward and ended up breaking her front leg before exiting behind her offside shoulder, She did the high kick and took off straight through anything in the way, She ended up piling up about 125yds from the shot, Ive made the mistake in the past of letting old girls like this walk and regretted it every time, Im not gonna let one go that can pick you out and cause you headaches until somebody harvesters her,1 point
