So had a great hunt tonight and had my 5 year old with me so I'll type it out.. So about 4 the wife and girl were heading to store so I figured I'd take a walk with boy. We walked till about 5 and he sat down on this log over looking a steep hill...anyways out of nowhere I see a doe running thru the woods and sure enough probably the biggest buck ive ever seen hot on her heels...this was about 100 yards out so I told boy to look...next thing I know the doe 180s back the way she came so figured they were gone...now we are on top of this hill just chilling no masks just sitting when the doe shows back up 20 yards below is and the boy turns and says dad deer...I told him shah and watch don't move by I could see the buck coming about 50 yards behind her as she's still running....now I'm a let this buck run by be he's running no grunt or anything on me....well the buck stops right in front of me broadside at 20 yards so I draw and shoot...things a monster watched it run away like a bat outta hell pretty sure I got him...so I told the boy to hold tight and I walk down hill to find the arrow broke covered in blood...called up fil and he called uncle who came to help track after hr or so....blood is spotty found some with what appears to be lung in it...needless to say I'm taking the day off tomorrow to continue at the revine where we left off and hope the deer gods are smiling on me tomorrow and give me a dead deer....and my 5 yr old got to see the entire thing unfold right in front of him now just need the deer to mount in his room... 1st off a member asked for advice and he's call out. Hey the member stated facts as he was the one there, he doesn't need the keyboard army on him. Answers to your question is yes he will die. go out 1st thing today and look for hair where the impact was the lighter the hair the lower you hit him. Some times even with best of shots deer run a bit. Start at the spot you shot him draw a straight line where you seen LAST seen him. 2 things to look for along the way Blood or matter when he jumps small logs and ditches. With this type of shot he may or may not give a good trail to follow. Look at belly hight for sign on brush or trees. Follow the trail out 100-300 yds look for beds with dark blood spot, make some circles within the area. if you walk up on him and he is in a bed his eyes will be open if dead, closed if in shock. Watch for Crows, you can find him. Everyone makes errors and your not the 1st to make it, don't be fooled by talk. Let us know and good luck11 points

Just shot a nice looking buck... Waiting a little while before I get him9 points

So, some of you have never wounded a deer? Your self restraint and patience were well established on your first hunt? You came out of the gate well trained? Yeah, right. Keep telling yourself that. So he didn't sugar coat it, or beat around the bush. The guy was honest. It was a bad shot. It happens. He didn't intend to gut shoot the deer. To the OP, the deer is dead by now. Go look, & look, & look. If / when you find him, thank him for the food he will provide & apologize for making a poor shot. Make your peace within yourself, & disregard the bitch slapping you get on this site. Learn from it & move on. Most of all, when some new hunter tells you about a mistake they made, don't treat them like crap.8 points

I don't get riled up over the little stuff if I catch him again I will call the cops he will get a 25$ fine and most likely do it again. You cant let little things bother you. I do this because I enjoy being outdoors not to get stressed Over A holes. I can and will make his life miserable if it continues but certainly not getting stressed and ruin a beautiful hunt over it.8 points

Have tried this before and no one ever wants to put up the time and money but always wants to hunt over the best food plots and what not. I spend a ton of money and time on my land and I have found it easier to just have it to myself and my brother who hunts a few times a year. My neighbor on the other side who is a distant relative and I used to "share our lands" but he shot multiple "extra" deer and what not and instead of it becoming a fight we agreed to stay on our own sides with a "tracking agreement." It has worked very well for us. I guess I am kind of selfish but I like hunting by myself and not having to worry about others.7 points

Someone should keep a tally of that type of post. So far, in the last few weeks we had a guy who wants to make booby traps for ATVs, a guy who openly admitted his desire to kill someone over a $150 treestand, and now someone who wants to sling lead at trespassers. At least there will be a plethora of evidence on this forum once all of the "hunting accidents" start happening.6 points

I have to agree, it would make total sense for him to let me hunt his 1 1/3 acre so I can let him hunt my 400.So last nights "visit" went as expected he answered the door I told him what I seen him doing he denied it over and over and eventually slipped and fessed up.Then my neighbor who was with me told him that if that's how he was treating property that he didn't have permission to hunt that he didn't want him on his either. The man nearly started crying explaining how none of this was fair and he moved out of the city to get away from a$$ holes like us. And that he didnt work so he had a lot of time to "sneak onto our land when we weren't around" so as the plot thickens we will have to wait and see what else this moron will try. I don't think keeping him off of my property will be too hard because the only entrance he has because of the creek is about 20 feet wide and I have a 4 strand high tension electric fence that I have for keepin my beef cows in. Well needless to say the beef have been gone for a month but the power is back on the fence as of this morning:).6 points

That's pretty ballsy to not only hunt your land in the face of denial, but to actually hunt your stands.6 points

I'd like to think I have a sure thing the next time I hit the woods, a south or southwest wind is what I'll need to get 'er done though. I had to hang another stand just 30 yards north west of a long time producing archery stand due to the damn deer NOT following the script like they used to. You see, they have started to use a seldom used trail the goes within 2' of the base of my old stand. Yupper, two feet. I had a little 6pt do it last week and enough others over the years that I needed to make a change. I left the "killer" stand in place, just added the new one. Sure thing? Probably not but it's fun to dream.................................talk to me in a week, or less.5 points

I let the new mathews monster eat. She walked around my treestand for 2 hours before I shot her at 30yards.5 points

I'm absolutely not spending this much time on this guy however I rent the 4 acre field that surrounds his lot for hay and I just made a call to have 2 6500 gallon loads of liquid cow manure spread on it . We will see how he likes that!5 points

A little dark in your eyes can be completely different than O.P. A little dark could have very well of been before sunset especially on an overcast day. Why is everyone so quick to chastise a person? Not to mention by the O.P. grammar and spelling they are young around 16 years old I would bet, and a first time hunter. Nothing like attacking a young kid to push them out of the sport. Give yourselves a pat on the back for being that guy! Give the kid some advice and be on your way. Everyone has made bad shots. I made a bad shot 2 weeks ago hit a branch on a bedded doe and it got her just in front of her hips arrow stayed in her. Tracked her 1/2 mile with minimal blood and lost her, it happens. That was the first in 8 years we all make mistakes hopefully the kid learned from it.5 points

It is weird to watch the little feeding frenzies that occur periodically on here. There must be some little surge of personal worth or superiority that people get when they get a chance to lay on the grief to those that have had a lapse of judgment or a stroke of bad luck. I wish I could say that it is all comical, but I see it more as a detriment to the forum.5 points

After talking with my buddy (the owner), he encouraged me to use the compound. I was shooting well before the hunt, & felt confident. Took awhile, but got a 17 yard shot. Double lung, pass thru. Dead very quickly! Had a great time. We were shocked that it passed through. I was very hesitant, but it this was a real testament to shot placement.4 points

I'm 6'2" and purposely space my tree steps very far apart for the last 5 minutes I have been watching this guy trying to do "pull-ups" trying get into my stand. This guy stopped and asked if he could hunt my land the day he moved in and I told him no so I will be stopping by his house this evening. But in the meantime this is hilarious!4 points

I will say this, "NOW" is the time to hunt doe groups. I'd hang in there, magic time is about to happen!4 points

See, that's why I use fishing arrows to hunt deer. If they go into posted property, I can drag them back without ever setting foot on that property.4 points

Thanks All, I wish I could have been a little more positive, but I showed you what happened, no sugar coating. Sometimes things just ain't so great and maybe if I was younger I would have sucked it up, hunted the wind and rain, came back to camp wet and thought nothing of it...but I'm older now and more cautious..just getting out there was an effort for me this year. Sitting here next to the wood stove tonight, I think back and wonder if I had done this or tried that, the trip might have been different, but in the end I know I needed to be cautious, I made the best of it and have no regrets. On the way home I said never again, but I'm already re-thinking my options and how I could plan ahead for these conditions next year. Thanks Fletch for the offer, but I'm a true solo type person when it comes to these type of activities...I have a hard time coping with my own company...haha3 points

Forget the chastising were all here to help one another. This young hunter has now learned he made a mistake and will learn from it. He got the fever. It happens. He'll from it and move on. Any luck with the recovery. I live in Suffolk and can assist in tracking if you need any help. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk3 points

he IS a new hunter. he never said it was illegal hours or too dark. There are plenty of darker canopies that offer legal shots that can be made ethically but still offer a challenge versus full blown daylight. man the seasoned guys here are so quick to forget how hard this sport really is and how difficult it can be.3 points

Hunters helping hunters. We are the blood brotherhood. United we stand, divided we fall. Let the one who has never erred, cast the first stone.3 points

I am also tall and do this with my steps too. I actually had a local, not a neighbor, ask me why my steps were so far apart, it made it hard for him to get in my stand. He did not have permission to hunt. I just laughed at him and told him not to step foot on the property again. I would have taken him out with me if he had ask. I don't give permission for people to hunt on their own, but I will take people out with me and set them up, if they do not have places to hunt or have trouble seeing deer. I just do not want people walking around on their own, screwing up my setups.3 points

If the world was suddenly completely devoid of all poisonous snakes, the world would be a much better place to live. They rank right up there with mosquitos and ticks.3 points

Posts like this should almost be taken right off by mod's. New hunter is one thing but this is kinda massed up on many levels. Get some friends and grid search for that animal and as was said...Watch and listen to the birds. They will find it before you do.3 points

Don't celebrate to much tonight ,, if you do find him ,, it will be a pleasure to gut .. Look and look for that deer cause you caused him a terrible painful death,, so give that deer the respect it deserves and find it ....3 points

I don't agree with anyone that is irritated with me (us) for not smiling in the pictures. Matter of fact, its starting to irritate me that you'd even care what I look like in the picture. However, "what really grinds my gears" is hunters telling other hunters what they should and shouldn't shoot. If it's legal don't worry about what he or she shoots, especially when its on their own land. This never made sense to me.3 points

These bureaucrats were never empowered to enforce the law. They were never empowered to make the law either, for that matter. But over the last three years they have made 27X more laws than than the elected Congress. We have a federal government that has gone rogue.2 points

Assuming you were hunting in Suffolk County, as your profile states- why were you taking a shot so long after sunset? You state "it was already a little dark" apparently you shot under poor conditions and past legal hunting time. Hopefully you find the deer. Be discreet next time.2 points

hey, you gave it a shot...what else can one do? and yes it will die from a stomach shot, will you find it? probably not........you are joking, right?2 points

I have put enough hunting seasons behind me to know that the first couple weeks of November, you can expect anything to happen. At anytime. Anywhere. No matter what the weather may be. Be in the woods as much as possible. Expect the unexpected.2 points
