So the wind was perfect for the "Sure Thing" stand. Up and in position, bow hauled up, arrow knocked, put shooting release on hand, hear a couple footfalls to the west, spot doe. No way........I JUST got in the stand 60 seconds earlier.........................OK, I'll participate. She doesn't follow the script exactly though, she heads to the base of the stand. A couple whiffs of me and she takes two quick jumps towards where she came from. I had the bow drawn before she even stopped, figuring she'd stop and take a peek at the blob in the branches........FFFffttt..,. the arrow is gone and right in the boiler room. She sprints away and I hear her crash about 60 yards from me. I can't see her but I'm confident she is down...................................I decide to leave her be until 9:30 or so, planning on the arrival of a buck at some point. Well, around 8;15 I see a red fox sneaking up on the approx. spot she went down. He figured he had a freebie coming! He must have gnawed away on her for about 20 minutes when all of a sudden I see him/her sneaking towards me with something in it's mouth. WTH man, it's the tail from my doe!! Honest injun...... I guess my aluminum arrows and 100gr Thunderheads can still do it even at 35 yds. This buck was a real fighter as he has scars all over his face. His left eye was even swollen almost all of the way shut from a recent brawl. I haven't had him aged yet, but I believe he's and old timer and was in decline. He has unbelievable mass on the bases and main beams. His face and head are very gray, and he's missing quite a few teeth in the front of his mouth.

My first with a bow, I was told if I want to help out I need to start shooting doe. (To please the land owners.) So after many years of passing them, now they are on my radar. After passing 3 early that where pushed by a 4pt I spotted 2 button bucks but could not see the doe. She popped out at what I though was 20 yards but after reviewing the video she was probably closer to 18 yards. Arrow broke off and spun around the cavity, broad head was stuck in the entry wound, found that out the hard way and found the rage was still sharp! You can hear her crash right after the shot. This guy popped out of a stand of pines and was heading in the wrong direction. At 66yds I decided to grunt which turned him around. He came back to about 40 but had no shot. Started to leave again so I grunted and snort wheezed. Why not. And low and behold he came back and two my left for a 32yd shot. We have several cam shots of him. I actually told phade I would be happy to shoot him. Big bodied and named him tank. Not the biggest of those we have on cam but I couldn't be happier. First time I truly called a buck in.

So, here is an update on my shoulder problem. Not quite sure what happened,maybe bursitis or some minor tear of stuff. I could hardly move my arm, had a lot of pain and trouble sleeping, but finally after a week the pain started to subside and I got some exercises from a PT friend. It is pretty depressing how fast muscles can atrophy. The saying Use it or loose it is too true. I feel like I can maybe get back in the game next week. Would be nice

1st buck with a bow 3m. Saw 3 does early but too far out. About an hour later, there were 2 - 4 pointers making a ton of noise behind me. I used a grunt call and both came towards my stand. I used a new scent I saw on these forums and hung them in good shooting lanes. One of the 4 pointers took the lead and headed right toward the scent . 15 yd shot, and was down in 20. Love it when a plan comes together.

Now wait a minute. We just got done tar and feathering a new hunter with 5 or so pages of telling him what a scumbag he is for not abiding by the legal hunting hours that I assume had slipped by him. You know the old rule: "ignorance of the law is no excuse". So, everyone should have a copy of those volumes of Environmental Conservation Laws purchased and committed to memory as well as constantly checking and memorizing all new laws that are passed every year...... right? A bit of sarcasm here, but I think you all know what I am getting at.

Nada this morning , more of a hunt n scout with this insane wind n rain in a spot that I believe is part of the crab claw 10's area for cruisin, couple scrapes no rubs, no deer, back in his core area tonight.... ​Suppose to be warm her on LI. If my cold gets better I am suppose to be off Thursday until the 22nd. You can bet I will be out hunting this week, this warm weather will not stop a buck chasing a doe in heat. This is the weekend to really step up and put your time in. Anything can happen at any time so I pack a lunch and stay all day! First weekend in November should not even be a question about if you should go it is really about how long CAN you go!

I'll only move after lunch. I have plenty of antlers on the wall that came after 10am.

There is another thread on this somewhere . I'm off for two weeks and was really going to,hit it hard those weeks and still will. Little wind, no rain easy temps to sit all day if one wants. Now it has gone from mid 60's to low 70's , I may hunt more mornings now , but from what I saw and others reported bucks are on their feet where I hunt. I shot this guy a on a bright warm sunny afternoon. My friends old west are hunting Montana next week out of a tent, lows in the teens ! I'm ok with 60 !

What a morning ! So fricken close. I feel a little ill. Here's what happened: Alarm goes off, I hear the wind and rain and decide it is a fool's errand to be out in that crap. Then I remember I have a busy week and am out of town next weekend for hunting camp. This will be the last morning for a while, that I can hunt locally. I slowly get my act together and decide to do the short drive to my neighbors. No one hunt's the area but I have only sat one evening there so far. I did not get any trail cam pics, pre-season and scouting revealed zero fresh rubs. The land is quite swampy too. I figured a hard winter and not much to eat may have done in the larger bucks. However, a couple of days ago I found a line of fresh and aggressive looking scrapes. For a change of scene, and just to see what if, I hit the stand I moved yesterday over a scrape. The stand is set-up for a shot, 20 yards to my left. I don't really have any shot on my right side due to the pine tree I am up inside for cover. Expectations were low, I had started to wander in my thoughts. I was lucky enough to be standing, facing back toward the expected direction of travel. I am literally miles away in thought, but I see movement toward my left side, the wrong side of the stand. Something is coming in fast from about 60 yards off. I see bone, lots of nice bone. This guy looks a shooter. At first he seems to be heading to my right side, the side totally covered by pine tree branches. I maybe have a small window if he passes at 15 yards. He starts to zigzag and each zag pulls him more and more in my direction. I am hoping and praying he is going to peel off and head toward the scrape. Nope, he has somewhere else to be and before I know it he is 10 yards under me, behind me and behind a thick Cherry tree.He stops, looks right up at me, through the pine branches. He knows something is off and doubles back and quickly heads away from me. I try calling, he stops but he is wary and has no desire to check me out. He is gone and out of sight in a couple of minutes. He really wanted to get past me so I figure he may try a long circular double back move and come by further off to my right. The stand is blown, I know that , so I jump down and head toward where he came from, a thick stand of hemlocks. As I approach, another Buck comes out of the exact same spot! A four point this time, not on the menu. I hide behind a tree. He too starts coming right at me. I am annoyed at the time delay this will cause. He eventually heads away and I get in position. All the while I am scanning for a new tree. This area is obviously a corridor for bucks and I need to be on it. I give it an hour. No more action. The 4 pointer is still around though, and he doesn't seem that bothered by me as I head back to the stand, following the trail left by the bigger 8 earlier, I realize I have put my stand in one of his corridors. There is large, fresh poops right next to me. My stand placement was literally too good, too close. I will be moving the stand this afternoon in anticipation of hunting this new spot later, where the Bucks are moving in and out of. A very frustrating morning, but lots of fun none the less. That is probably the best Buck action I have had so far. Actually had eyes on a shooter right under my stand! I may have pics from the camera I put over the scrape. Checking now.

2005 in PA the last 3 days of archery: Day 1 as I'm driving to my spot I see a giant buck cross in front of me chasing a doe. It runs into an area that I won't be hunting. Day 2 I see the big fella now in my area hounding a doe. He stops for calling but won't leave doe. This is an evening hunt so I stay in the woods late so I can leave under cover of darkness. Day 3 last day of PA archery. My plan is to hunt from climber last place I saw him until 8:30 and if no sightings move climber 100 yds to the trail where I saw him the previous night. 8:30 am break down stand as quietly as possible and move 100 yds. Find tree, climb, trim a limb, and start grunting. 9:00 am 136" 10 pt dead. A hunt I will never forget Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk

Also, I only use single pin sights. Too much can go wrong with multiple pins in the heat of the moment.

Never forget my second year hunting with my best friend and hunting partner Shawn in the Catskills 1989. It was our last day and we where heading out just before dark. Walking down a dirt trail covered in rocks we where not exactly quiet, a buck must have been on the side of the trail and at about 20 ft he found out we where not deer! His snort growl was loud and fierce! (We both jumped!) Then he bolted in a direct line away from us, anything in his way was broken, snapped or ran through for 50+ yards and he was not stopping! The sound of this beast crashing through the woods at tops speed was something I had never heard before and his growl at us was unnerving to say the least! We both had our guns at the ready and said what the hell was that! Gave us a good scare, lol. My first close encounter with a big buck and he scared the hell out of us!

Bucks are chasing and can't shoot them from your couch. You never know when old moe will appear.

It's been 42 years since a person died of a snake bite in New York. I prefer my chances with snakes to lightning, mosquitoes and ticks. Numbers of people have died from West Nile, and countless more have been made sick by tick borne illnesses. Snakes are only a problem in your mind.

And the other reason to use tarps. Easy clean up.

In 2003 I was bow hunting in IL and I shot a big buck. The shot, I saw later, wasn't exactly perfect. The buck took off after the shot and I waited about an hour before climbing down. I looked for blood but it ran out quickly, so I followed his tracks in the dirt. As I was staring at the ground I hear a deer take off from the wood line. I look up and I see a big buck taking off across the field but he didn't seem right. I had an idea of where he was headed so I ran to my truck and headed to where he was going. As I'm driving up the road I see him cross a couple of hundred yards ahead of me. When I get to where I can see him I pull off the road and watch him start to cross the field when he suddenly lays down. I'm watching him through my binoculars and all of a sudden I see a doe come running across the field as she's being chased by a 140" class 8 pointer. Both deer stop and look at my buck and all of a sudden he jumps up and chases off the 8 pointer. He didn't go too far as he had bled out quite a bit by then. He laid down again and finally expired after about 5-10 minutes. Even in death the power of the rut took over.

I guess for me, I am out of the game for a while. I am looking a lot like a mummy with gauze, tape and a jillion stitches and orders not to be pulling back my bow. Timing for this surgery really sucks. There was some stuff that the doctor didn't want to see developing on my skin so they all decided to skin me like a muskrat ... well that's a pretty big exaggeration....lol. Hopefully by gun season I'll be able to shoot and drag deer. Well, that's the way it goes sometimes. I'm pretty lucky because after all these years, these are the first stiches I have ever had. So now, it's up to all you guys to control the deer herd this year without my help until gun season rolls around. So get out there and keep the DEC happy. I'll still be here bugging everyone ..... lol. Probably even worse now. So brace yourselves for an evil-tempered frustrated old geezer.

He was mature enough to shoot disregard any other comments about age! You want to start a threat about when a buck reaches maturity go right ahead but don't reign down on another hunters kill that he feels is mature enough to shoot. This winter was pretty hard on some area's and this will affect antler growth, he is the buck that survived the 2014-2015 winter and that is a feat into itself! Nice buck! Congrats!!!

Last 2 weeks - same as last year. Up till the Oct 1st date - bow opener was a different date every year. SZ gun still is.

Seen lots of crazy stuff on the road, lots similar to yours. I've also seen where entire knuckles were torn off from their ball joints. I have a few stories of my own, but most of them were foolish incidents that I was fully aware of the consequences and took the risks anyway. Living on the edge is always fun, until you fall off. Wow I'm glad I put this post up, I just checked and sure enough it is the 7th, I have 2 other hunting buddies who think it's starting tomorrow too. Guess I'll be using the old Bowtech vert for another week. Thanks for the heads up.

But then we'd be overrun with rodents... those pesky mice! I think snakes are extremely interesting... saw my first rattler in PA over the summer... I was actually excited.. stopped the car and ran up to it to get a pic before it got into the woods.

You must admit, though....It seems like "behind the rump roast" would be an appropriate place to hide them..
