  1. Well I wasn't overly confident with the high winds this afternoon. I had only seen a small buck and was getting pretty bored. Then I hear noise behind me to the right. I quickly see he's a shooter, grab my bow and stand up. At this point he's maybe 12yrds from the stand. He hears the stand make alittle noise when I stand up, he looks around for a second and takes a couple steps and I grunt to stop him and get it fly. He went maybe 70yrds.

  2. My friend nailed this guy on Halloween night,he hit a branch and the shot wasn't good.We left him overnight and we found him this am.By the time we had gotten to him the coyotes had tore him up real bad.He still tagged him for the horns and we are taking the carcass back out to set a few traps around it to get some of the friggin coyotes. He came in to rattling and grunting. He green scored at 138 so he should make NYS big buck club

  3. I took this old fighter on Halloween. He came in after hearing a few bleats with the can. The shot hit its mark and he only went 30 yards and fell over. I guess my aluminum arrows and 100gr Thunderheads can still do it even at 35 yds. This buck was a real fighter as he has scars all over his face. His left eye was even swollen almost all of the way shut from a recent brawl. I haven't had him aged yet, but I believe he's and old timer and was in decline. He has unbelievable mass on the bases and main beams. His face and head are very gray, and he's missing quite a few teeth in the front of his mouth.

  4. I guess for me, I am out of the game for a while. I am looking a lot like a mummy with gauze, tape and a jillion stitches and orders not to be pulling back my bow. Timing for this surgery really sucks. There was some stuff that the doctor didn't want to see developing on my skin so they all decided to skin me like a muskrat ... well that's a pretty big exaggeration....lol. Hopefully by gun season I'll be able to shoot and drag deer. Well, that's the way it goes sometimes. I'm pretty lucky because after all these years, these are the first stiches I have ever had. So now, it's up to all you guys to control the deer herd this year without my help until gun season rolls around. So get out there and keep the DEC happy. I'll still be here bugging everyone ..... lol. Probably even worse now. So brace yourselves for an evil-tempered frustrated old geezer.

  6. I specifically requested the thread not become a debate on high fence. I was simply looking for input on my equipment. I've always wanted to shoot one with my bow. The opportunity came along, so I took it. I'm not trying to portray it as something it wasn't.

  7. So the wind was perfect for the "Sure Thing" stand. Up and in position, bow hauled up, arrow knocked, put shooting release on hand, hear a couple footfalls to the west, spot doe. No way........I JUST got in the stand 60 seconds earlier.........................OK, I'll participate. She doesn't follow the script exactly though, she heads to the base of the stand. A couple whiffs of me and she takes two quick jumps towards where she came from. I had the bow drawn before she even stopped, figuring she'd stop and take a peek at the blob in the branches........FFFffttt..,. the arrow is gone and right in the boiler room. She sprints away and I hear her crash about 60 yards from me. I can't see her but I'm confident she is down...................................I decide to leave her be until 9:30 or so, planning on the arrival of a buck at some point. Well, around 8;15 I see a red fox sneaking up on the approx. spot she went down. He figured he had a freebie coming! He must have gnawed away on her for about 20 minutes when all of a sudden I see him/her sneaking towards me with something in it's mouth. WTH man, it's the tail from my doe!! Honest injun...... I got a little Iphone video to substantiate the theft. Here is the doe................

  8. If you think you hit in the guts or ass DO NOT TRACK IT! give it at least 4 hrs. Trust me you cannot jump a dead deer but a mortally wounded deer will cover a lot of ground if pushed!

  12. Nothing like a hunting site where people advocate not shooting a game animal. When the NY State DEC takes them off the huntable game list, I'll stop shooting them. It's bad enough the season isn't year round. Next, we will be chastised for killing porcupine.

  13. After talking with my buddy (the owner), he encouraged me to use the compound. I was shooting well before the hunt, & felt confident. Took awhile, but got a 17 yard shot. Double lung, pass thru. Dead very quickly! Had a great time. We were shocked that it passed through. I was very hesitant, but it this was a real testament to shot placement.

  15. So I stepped into the woods this morning 5:15 and right into a group of deer...they started running and one snorted...before it could get any more out I hit my archery hands free grunter..and then I heard a grunt behind me...I kept moving as quietly as possible.... grunting every 10 steps...... then stopped and listened...under cover of pines ...the deer were moving back in on me and milling around....... God forever!...I stood there a tad worried about just how big a buck had snorted and which steps I heard coming my way might be his...I stepped into a pine and started quietly bending and crushing branches, filling the air with the smell of pine...evenually the snapping of branches and steps in the leafs subsided...and I broke from the pine in hopes not to get nailed again...I'd spent 15 mins just 12 yrds from my stand and now it was getting lighter out...climbed up and just as I knocked an arrow in come some slow steady steps...I was praying it would have some wht. on it's head but it was still too dark to see clearly...I watched as it fed out in the clover 25 yrds away......by 6:25 it had fed in under my stand and I could clearly see it to be a doe fawn she kept looking behind her but nothing showed...then Mr B loading up and starting to leave had her attention...I had turned my head toward the road and as I slowly turned back there she was looking straight up at me....thought about it a moment then jumped out of the plot...stopped again and looked my way but I was frozen...she fed in grass in the hedge and slowly moved off...nothing else seen...Pulled the cam I put on the apple tree 44yrds directly across the from the stand ...all night a line of big doe and fawn right up to 5:15...It was that group of doe and fawn that had a group of buck come in to them...I recognized much of the noise I heard as doe being pushed around...either that or fawns being pushed away...but I did hear that grunt.. No deer but a great on ground hunting experience...I was able to keep them in the area even after having been snorted at..I got a buck to return grunt......success in my book as far as this game of chess goes.....Now to plan the next move...perhaps capture the queen....

  16. any 3.5 is a stud to me. ESPECIALLY with the stick and string. Here's my nomenclature 1.5 - little guy or scrub buck 2.5 - nice buck, tweener 3.5 - stud, shooter, mounter 4.5 and up - monster

  17. I wasn't having great results with my Matrix 310, shooting 125gr Thunderheads. I was getting fliers and the grouping just wasn't there. Also, the trajectory of the bolts didn't match the 20, 30, 40, or 50yd marks on my reticle. So, I called Excalibur, & the guy said I needed to use a shorter broadhead to get less planing, as well as switch to a 150gr. He said heavier was better and the more weight forward of center, the better as well. He recommended the Excalibur Boltcutter 150gr 3 blade. I was skeptical because I figured it was just a way to sell their heads, but I bought them anyway. Long story short, the trajectory now lines up perfectly with every yardage on the scope, all the way to 50yds. The bow will now put every shot into a 3" circle all the way to 50yds, even with a broadhead. At 20 & 30, it's putting them in the same hole. Would I shoot a deer at 50? No way, there's way too much time for a deer to react. But I'll shoot to 30 all day long. Being so accurate at 50 makes the realistic ranges feel like chip shots. I love this thing!

  18. . I got some flack for the weekend I had but Jesus, you think you way have it a doe not sure, stayed in your stand which is the right thing to do. Give it some time. But then you drew on a buck. Seriously guy. Worry about the one you might have hit first. I spent almost 2 full days looking for the doe that I killed this weekend.... Never found her but I looked and didn't draw on another deer or even hunt until I was sure I wasent going to find her

  20. One of my neighbors and I have stands 10 feet from each other and we both usually sit them for opening morning of gun because the deer follow the hedge row when pushed off other neighbors property. For years we had stands 200yds apart but were always worried of shooting towards each other so we agreed on this set up a while back and it has worked great. He shoots the first buck he sees so it usually doesn't take long and me being right there keeps him honest and not shooting one on my side.

  22. You are in control of the outcome of this situation! It can go two ways, either very badly or to just deal with it. If you decide to confront the other hunter, voice your displeasure, deny retrieval rights... it may come back and haunt you! Yeah, I too have stands located on or near property lines. My stands are generally positioned so I can or will only shoot onto my property! I also explain to the neighbors what I'm doing and ask well in advance for retrieval rights if/when the situation arises. If they seem the least bit apprehensive, I move the stand. I also request if they have stands near my property, please don't shoot onto it. Retrieval is fine. I won't shoot onto your property, so I'd expect the same courtesy! Stands that are close to one another for bow season is one thing, but a completely different set of issues for gun/firearms season!! Pissing matches with neighboring hunters never ends well, everyone gets PO'ed! BTW - Not your situation, but just a general statement... Stands located on/near property lines are prime candidates for theft!

  24. Let Montana and other states with wolves show us what a population unchecked can do to wildlife numbers ... I am all for taking them bye all legal means necessary they are over taking red fox and greys quickly in all territories. ... I think I seen a study that said our coyotes were only 10% wolf blood of any kind Wich was extremely low .. Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk

  27. Imagine someone coming into your living room and putting a new chair with a hideous floral pattern right in the center of the room. You would notice right? So now imagine someone getting a new chair that looks like your current furniture, and sets it off to the side as not to stick out and hopefully blend in. Same thing goes for setting up a blind. Set it off to the side and make it blend in. Use pine boughs and other sticks and twigs or branches to break up the outline of a square hut placed in the middle of the deer's living room. They will notice but get used to it as time goes on, but can't put an exact timeframe on it.

  29. If the wind is howling where you are the way it is here, you could walk through the woods breaking every branch in the woods, and dragging both feet through the leaves and never have deer hear you coming. so move around where ever you want. I usually use these kinds of days for scouting and getting updated on what's going on in different parts of the woods. perhaps while on the move you can catch a whitetail being blown by. A big fish net can be useful on these kinds of days with super-winds.

  30. I was going to say the same thing. Additionally, I personally don't shoot past 30. Been bow hunting over 10 years and it's serves me right so far. I'd certainly suggest a new hunter keep it under 30. Not a rule just a suggestion. Good luck.

  31. My first with a bow, I was told if I want to help out I need to start shooting doe. (To please the land owners.) So after many years of passing them, now they are on my radar. After passing 3 early that where pushed by a 4pt I spotted 2 button bucks but could not see the doe. She popped out at what I though was 20 yards but after reviewing the video she was probably closer to 18 yards. Arrow broke off and spun around the cavity, broad head was stuck in the entry wound, found that out the hard way and found the rage was still sharp! You can hear her crash right after the shot. She was 40 yards from the hit. This is the video. Shot is after the 1 min mark. Buddy made me wait until dark to find her, his property so I comply. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yxfsMDedRok

  32. This guy popped out of a stand of pines and was heading in the wrong direction. At 66yds I decided to grunt which turned him around. He came back to about 40 but had no shot. Started to leave again so I grunted and snort wheezed. Why not. And low and behold he came back and two my left for a 32yd shot. We have several cam shots of him. I actually told phade I would be happy to shoot him. Big bodied and named him tank. Not the biggest of those we have on cam but I couldn't be happier. First time I truly called a buck in.

  36. I've said it on here a bunch of times. I've seen some of the biggest bucks wandering around on days in the mid 60's during the rut. Enjoy the warm temps and hunt all day if you can. Staying warm on stand won't be an issue.

Nothing to show today but I got out to a new property and looked over all of the 100 or so acres he has of swamp and cornfields that drop down steep hills to the swamps ... so I set 4 sets down on the logging roads 1 double and 2 other separate spots ... we will see how this spot pans out but I got a good feeling about this spot Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk

  45. 30 years ago while checking my muskrat traps before school in the dark. I shine my flashlight to the waters edge as I'm in chest waders wading looking for a set I knew I had nearby. Light spots a 4-5 ' water snake on the waters edge. I couldn't walk around on dry land as too thick so I decided to keep my distance in the water. Looked good on paper til I hit a beaver run and filled my waders up. That snake was huge !! Only water snake I've seen in immediate area before and since. I don't mind small snakes but big ones freak me out. Big rattler ...no thanks.
