So, bit of a surprising result this evening. I came home a little early from work and despite the ridiculous temps, I decided to sit for the remaining 40 minutes of shooting light.I am going away for the weekend so I didn't wanna waste any opportunity to try and get Big-Boy. It is dry, a dead calm.Almost no breeze. I'm thinking, as I crunch my way to the stand, that this is gonna be a waste of time, but it's already almost 4:30, so I won't be out there long.Sunset is a little after 5 in my zone. I sit in the stand.2 or 3 squirrels are tearing it up in the dry leaves, making a decent racket. 10 minutes after my butt touches seat I hear a more regular version of leaf crunching. Something is coming my way. It's getting louder and louder. I can tell its close but I can't see a fricken thing between all the sapling trunks.Maybe it's my neighbor going for a walk I wonder? No self respecting Deer will be out in this crap, surely? Then I see him and for one fraction of a second I think it might be the Big 10. I see a decent amount of bone. After a couple of seconds I realize it is not the monster 10, but he looks a decent 8 and I have put in enough hours this last month to take the shot and reward my patience. He has read the playbook and is coming right toward the pinch point made by some fallen trees. I line my sight up right over the spot he is going to hit. As soon as his shoulders pass under the pin I let one fly. He drops like a sack of potatoes. My shot was a touch high and I have spine shot him unfortunately. It was a clean pass through, I haven't yet recovered the arrow. So he is down but not out, he crashes about behind this lump of dead tree tops. I cannot see him for a kill shot. I have to jump down and run around to get to the other side of the brush-pile. At about 15 yards I put another arrow right into the boiler room and it is over. This is the stand I was surrounded by coyotes in, so I rush back, get a 4 wheeler and the wife with a shotgun to cover me while I do the business of dressing him. I had no camera, so the photos are after dark and by the house. I cut my finger up nicely in my haste to get him gutted given the warm evening temps. I just missed the processors, so he is in the basement full of Ice packs for now.Have to wait till morning to get him to the butchers.20 points

Scored this nice buck on 11/1/15 While hunting with my brothers in Rock Hill. He was chasing a doe and came straight at me. When he got to 13 yds I drew down on him with my Bowtech Destroyer and sent my Rage tipped Easton Flatline at him. He dropped a few yards away.12 points

Between my bow, fanny pack, binos, and all the layers I've taken off, this tree is starting to look like the return counter at Dicks !10 points

I literally missed him by 2 mins....I went to close and turn on a cam I left open yesterday...had to take angel for a walk anyways...disturbed the area so figured Id check the wooden blind stand a 150 ft away...Wow ..This will stick in my brain for the rest of the season...PS note he made sure I got a good close up...lol6 points

One hour unless I see them go down. Obviously longer depending on the hit. Honestly I love the wait, there's no better feeling than sitting up there with the bow on a hanger, no arrow nocked, just chilling like the king of the world!5 points

Well the warm temps had me questioning going out today in Suffolk county, nailed a nice doe at 7:30, decided to hang out a little longer, well mr big comes walking in 30 min later, and I took my best buck with a bow to date, 8 ptr with one tine snapped off.5 points

Are we talking gun season or bow? Is the hunting grounds private and tightly controlled, or heavy pressured public land? Are we talking clear sunny days, or a driving rain? Time of day (losing daylight?). All of these things and more can have a bearing on what you have to do after the shot.4 points

- you've learned that nothing under any circumstances should touch your bow other than your face, release, and bow arm hand. the slightest contact anywhere and you're screwed. don't think about what it will do where, just don't do it. - another thing you haven't figured out quite yet is that there's a lot of crap deer do upon you releasing an arrow, including just before getting hit with it. darn good at 40 yards on the range doesn't mean much up in a treestand. lot going on. I'd knock your yardage down to under 30 yards and preferably at 20 yards. hunt off trails with that goal in mind. it'll help reduce the effects of error in everything you do. - also keep in mind deer have crazy reaction time especially when in close to you with something seeming off. they aren't meaning to dodge your arrow they're just lowering the body to preload the legs to take off running if need be. this in mind aim a 1/3 up from the bottom instead of centered on it's body from top to bottom. if the deer doesn't react your drill its heart and if it does you're center punching lungs versus sailing your arrow over its back like a warning shot. - don't shoot straight down or at a deer right under you. angle makes it hard to hit both lungs and harder to maintain form to put the arrow where you intended it to go. one lunged deer only is as good as gone. - pay attention closely to angle. quartering say toward you can look pretty slight compared to what it actually is. also remember to think about where the arrow will come out, not just where it's going in. a deer has depth and vitals change in size and position depending on angle. - download the DDH Shot Simulator for your smart phone if you've got one. play with that instead of crap like candy crush and slot machine whatever. that's my advise. good luck. still opportunity left.4 points

shooting at steep angles changes trajectory. not bending changes draw length you are pulling. If you want to verify the draw length. take a belt. slip the buckle over your thumb and (for a right hander) hold you left arm out like holding a bow. The buckle over your thumb like a ring. hold arm level and with your right hand take slack out of the belt and anchor the belt to the corner of you mouth. now bend at waist like shooting out of a stand. nothing moves. Stand back up straight and just lower your bow hand to make a similar shot without bending. What happens to the belt?3 points

Yep that's the stuff. Odds of lyme disease if a tick is on you for 24 hours are really quite high in this area, not worth the risk. It is not always easy to see them. Frost does not kill them. I do think they may get quite large this time of year so easier to see, but that stuff is inexpensive, certainly safer than flirting with lyme disease, and a worthwhile thing to buy IMO. Reviews are raving on amazon, too.3 points

we all have missed (atleast i hope im not the only one:)) no matter what we are using to hunt with. rifle, shotgun, XBow or compound... You might be the greatest shot on the range or out back behind the house.. But its a whole different story in the woods up a stand, at eye level on the ground with that creature.. trying to go undetected and pull off a shot with your weapon of choice. Your adrenaline will make you do some crazy things.. That animal is not always going to stand still like our range targets do.. On top of that, anyone who has hunted for some time has wounded them too, if anyone has yet to wound a deer, well props to you. but it happens, especially with the less experienced hunter, we learn from mistakes. ill admit ive wounded 5 deer in my deer hunting day. all were lethal shots but 1, i just decided to track the deer too soon.. and push it further away, my fault. live and learn. the other shot was just a bad bow shot...(wrong pin, hit the leg, deer lived for years) .. Ive learned above and beyond from all these, believe me. The keyboard doesnt type itself, the car doesn't drive itself neither.. The gun does not shoot itself, its the person behind each of these whose in control.. The gun, the bow, the rifle, and the XBOw are all as good as the person in power of these things.. Get proficient with yourself and better all of our odds3 points

And the fact is that no crossbow is as reliable at quick and humane kills as a scoped rifle. So if your overwhelming concern is to be always using the most reliable weapon for a quick kill then bow season was not created for you. Throw down that clunky crossbow and pick up a rifle and end your concerns. Do not muck around in the season of those that have entered the bowseason with a desire to use and accept the handicap of a bow. And my answer for those that refer to themselves as lazy, and undedicated, and too busy to use the bow season correctly and responsibly is to get the hell out of bow season and get your deer with the gun in the proper season. That is a weapon that is more in tune with the ability, responsibilities, and effort that you are willing to undertake. Why try to pry your way into a season that is not compatible with your lifestyle?3 points

Turns out that my fridge/freezer crapped out last night. GE profile that is maybe 5 years old on the long side.. In the past 5 years I have had to replace my ., dishwasher, dryer, washing machine, stove and now refrigerator. I bought them all new…… My old washing machine ($1000) lasted a whole 2.5 years, dryer ($900) 4 years, dishwasher( $800) about 3years, stove ($1100) about 3 years and now a 5 year old fridge..($1200) ..All different top end brands!! What a bunch of $h!t that is sold to us now. My mom passed away a couple years ago, and in her house were the same washer & dryer she had since I was in my early 20's,(long time ago folks) and the same fridge, basement freezer and stove that she had since not long after that. They all worked 100% . BUNCH OF B.S.2 points

The way I see it, there should either be full inclusion, or if crossbow has a separate season then compound bow should have the exact same season. If you want to hunt with longbow or recurve and feel as though you need a special season then I am actually fine with that. However, in my opinion compounds and crossbows should be restricted to the same seasons. They are both mechanically assisted, and arguing that compounds are more "traditional" than crossbows is like arguing whether dirt bikes or Harleys are more like bicycles.2 points

Went back to retrieve my arrow from yesterday evening. Had a couple of deer crunching through the area. They didn't even notice me. A small buck and the other I could only hear. Anyway, ranged the shot from last night. I had guessed it as being about 20 yards. It was somewhere between 22 and 25. So, not only a biggest archery record for me, but also my longest bow shot to-date. A twofer!2 points

Even if they had one, they probably wouldn't be that good. I purchased a cantilevered slug gun a while back with a separate scope. Got it home and was having a ton of trouble siting it in. Turns out the scope was way loose among a other things. box stores are great for toys, but not for working on them.2 points

Not a monster but a decent 2 year old 10 pointer. I don't know if I have pics of this guy at all from this year. Will have to go through the archives. Definitely my most impressive archery deer to date, so that is a personal result. Glad I passed on the smaller 8 now.2 points

11/3/2015 I went on a track this afternoon for a hunter that shot a 6 pointer at 7:30 this morning. He was in brush about 100 yards away, and did a mule kick when he was hit. He went a short distance and stopped, so she shot him again. This time he went down. After climbing down and walking over there, he was gone! She searched and found some blood, marked it and backed out, then went back 3 hours later with a helper. They lost blood after about 50 yards, then started a grid search. She actually called me from the woods as they were searching. Of course I advised her to back out and wait for Luna and I. Upon arriving we were unable to find the hit site, but Luna quickly found blood and we we were off. We tracked to their point of loss, then found blood about 40 or 50 yards beyond there. Our struggles began at that point. Luna took us off in 3 or 4 different directions but we never found any blood. I'd restart her at last blood and we went a few hundred yards each time, but nothing. The hunter had mentioned earlier that she thought it might have been heading to a thick bedding area, so I decided we'd see if we could pick anything up over there. Sure enough, Luna once again found a drop of dried blood. After continuing on for 50 yards or so, the buck jumped up about 5 feet in front of us. I called to the hunter to move up to get a shot, but the buck took off and was quickly out of sight. I showed her the line he took and told her to work in that direction and see if she could spot him. A minute later she raised her rifle and took a shot, missed, one more shot and he dropped. Luna was going crazy the whole time, barking and desperately wanting to go after him. When the hunter got over there, she saw he was still alive and asked if we should wait for him to expire. I told her no and to finish him off, so she did. Of course Luna was lavished with praise and chewed on a leg ????2 points

Just a thought, but most of the guys who care about measuring aren't going to be conservative since they seem to care more about the numbers than the deer itself. I know there are a few hunters who are more about the hunt that measure, but a LOT of hunters I know that talk about scores really only care about the trophy.2 points
-
I think some of the guys try to measure their own and really dont know what or how to measure. Had one guy that was measuring the tip to tip of the beam measurement and adding it to the score... I gave up trying to tell hunters not to post a score unless its offficial... they just open themselves up to scrutiny. Usually when I think there is a huge discrepancy with the score I leave it out of the post.. it saves everyone from the barrage of nay-sayers.2 points

Well I wasn't overly confident with the high winds this afternoon. I had only seen a small buck and was getting pretty bored. Then I hear noise behind me to the right. I quickly see he's a shooter, grab my bow and stand up. At this point he's maybe 12yrds from the stand. He hears the stand make alittle noise when I stand up, he looks around for a second and takes a couple steps and I grunt to stop him and get it fly. He went maybe 70yrds.2 points

If your shot was high , I have 2 questions . * Were you shooting from a tree stand ? * If you were shooting from a tree stand , did you bend at the waist or did you stay upright and lower your bow arm ?2 points

Great buck Papist and a great time hunting him thanks for the share.... Tinman....I have found if put in an area and left a day or two the deer just do not care....I build these big tower blinds and when I'm still working on them they cruise by look up once in a while and continue on their way or stop and feed....this newone...has had deer out feeding infront of it several times a day and it's pretty darn noticable.. Well to human eys at least...put cam facing away infront of it...will pull in a few days to see what is coming by...1 point

Opening day 9pt! I hunted yesterday afternoon and even though it was super windy I still had an opportunity at this buck. I shot him at 27yds with the Rage 2 blade, these broad heads have never let me down! I have taken 4 bucks with them now and never had one get away. This is not the biggest buck in the world but where I hunt you just can't pass them up this size.1 point
