Took a decent 8 from my property this morning with my nephew with me. It's a shame one main beam is missing about 3 inches from being snapped off in a fight I presume. Happy to have him though..8 points

The doe on the left is the one i got this am, My buddy and i decided too just stand around in the woods this am, We figured that people would start pushing the deer and sure enough, after 20 mins of just standing there shooting the bull, Four doe ran into the wood lot, I took aim with my 30-30 and dropped her in her tracks, The deer on the right is my buddies deer, He asked if he could bring his daughter with him to hunt last night, so i threw a ground blind up in the middle of a large hay field and this bb comes out with a smaller one, At the time he didnt realize it was a bb, but it doesnt really matter, His daughter was happy and seeing as he is injured and cant walk right now, And i didnt have to drag the deer very far, I didnt mind him shooting it, His daughter cant wait till she is old enough to hunt, That is what its about for me, Passing down the tradition, Sorry for the pick up pics but in hurry to get to the butcher and then home to get ready for dinner,5 points

Well heres the story, here iam opening morning of rifle its 10am and im dragging my 6 pointer out of my ditch to the road with the help of my cousin. As we get on the road a small car pulls up and we start to chat hunting. Shows me a 4 pointer he took that same morning (funny was stuffed in the truck of that tiny car), turns out he hunts on property that hes a care taker of at the end of my road. Now it gets interesting, he continues to tell me that hes in the DEC sportsman reg. Book for this year. Pulls out the book and there he is on page 68 i beleive check it out). Turns out that in December 8 2014 with the ML he shot a nontypical 12 pointer. Whats even more unusual i tell the guy i have a picture of his buck when it looked to be a 1 1/2 yr old back in August 2009, that would put this amazing buck at 6 1/2 years old. Why i think its the same buck, fist thing he told me was the buck had a unusual long nose (look at both pictures), also the U shape in both sides of horns. I always wondered what happed to that buck, now i can put that buck to rest.4 points

Opening morning 8pt. Was chasing does behind some blowdowns before he followed one out about 120yrds heading toward the swamp. This was a buck I had never had on camera until i checked them that day he was on both from the week prior.4 points

Was fortunate enough to take these two opening morning about 5 minutes apart..he came busting in behind me running three does in circles...once I repositioned my rifle he took off downhill after one doe...the second doe wandered behind some tress and headed down hill as well leaving the big girl I was able to take locked up at about 35-40 yards...I let the .30-.06 bark and she dropped within 20 yards after I caught lung-top of heart-lung. So I decided to call my wife and let her know we had a deer down, and low and behold I look down hill and the buck is peaking at me from behind a tree at about 120 yards....I told my wife I had to go and out the phone down, carefully took aim and drilled him with a liver-lung-lung shot quartering away...he was down 40 yards later and my freezer was instantly full!! Great memories and a great opening day spent at camp in 9p. Sent from my XT1254 using Tapatalk4 points

Well here's what the Canandaigua Messenger's outdoor editor's opinion of the opener in an area centering on WMU 8N. He did a much more thorough job of gathering info and opinions than I have, but for what it is worth, I have to say that in my little area of 8N, I have to agree with what he found. http://www.callingducks.com/newsfeed_item.aspx?ID=92531 It is interesting that 8N is one of the primary WMUs that the DEC has claimed is over-run with deer.3 points

If you're seeing deer but not getting shots id suggest spending more time pre-season trimming lanes and putting in more stands. Perhaps making runs. Too many people throw money at hunting. Believing the latest gizmo or gadget will cure their woes. Nothing beats boots on the ground. Spend the money on stuff to keep you warm and in the woods.3 points

It's silly to say the rut is over....It is a dynamic event, starting about the beginning of October and ending perhaps in early January in New York. Of course there are peak periods when the most estrous does are available, usually in early to mid November, but some does come in earlier, some later, and some do not get bred in their first heat and come back in about a month later. Whenever a doe comes into heat, there are always bucks willing to accommodate her. Kinda reminds of MYSELF when I was younger...<<smile>>..3 points

Tenderloin medallions flash fried about 1 minute per side in butter and sprinkled with a little seasoned salt... Did up both inside TLS and have enough leftover to take a Ziploc bag for lunch tomorrow for the PA opener...Along with proper accompaniments of course...A large Mr. Goodbar, a large Almond Joy and a pack of Reese Cups... One rule...DON'T put the chocolate and the hand warmers in the same pocket !3 points

It only took 8 weeks but I was finally able to connect. Sat in my ground blind tonight. She came out at 3:20 walking through the tall grass. Was at 10 yards at one point but I had no shot. She finally cleared and turned broadside at 36 yards. The Obsession bow and Rage broadhead did the rest. She ran about 40 yards and piled up from the double lung shot. Glad to finally get one on the ground! Let's hope it's all down hill from here. She dressed out at 105 lbs.3 points

Im a new hunter too (self taught) and have been hunting for 4 seasons now. I also hunt only public land. Strongly suggest getting a bow. Its much harder to get an animal with a bow, but the season is much longer and you have significantly less pressure. And trust me you'll need the longer season because it will take many hunts before you get something. It took me 3 years to harvest a deer. I learned A LOT from listening to podcasts. Hunt fish journal is great. A few others are pretty educational too. Look into how to field dress. The first time is definatelly a learning experience. Google maps your area and find small local patches of land where its not posted. If its green its a state park (no hunting). If you are not sure call DEC, theyre pretty nice and friendly they will let you know if its huntable. Look into scent control - most important. Also strongly sugest to get a treestand (climbing one) otherwise theres a strong possibility that someone will steal your setup. Quickly you'll realise that its a very expensive hobby/sport, but most rewarding. You get to bring home pure, tasty organic meat Have fun and enjoy. Good luck Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G890A using Tapatalk2 points

Is that field corner between the two lowest blue dots a low spot for the field? If so, that is most likely where he is entering the field in the PM. Thermals dropping will allow him to suck in the air off the field for threats, plus it often gives good sight advantage with potential for quick escape routes.2 points

Hunting a new spot this afternoon hasn't been hunted in a number of years. Signs are everywhere .Had to cut out a 2" poison ivy vine, this morning which grew across the seat of the stand, which is still in nice shape. New rachets and chain on and good to go. It's very thick in there, except for a shooting lane that still usable. By the looks of the trail, this is where the deer are.2 points

Ha-ha-ha ..... It sounds like you are asking us to give you permission to hunt there. Sorry .... the only place you can get permission is from officials of the town. If you are concerned about their word being any good, ask for written permission. At least you will have evidence of attempting to do the right thing. Town governments have legal representation that they may call on if the question of legality is a tough one. However, you cannot just out of hand assume you are going to get a bogus answer. Of course don't be asking the cleaning lady or the town historian....lol.2 points
-
My guess is that just like any town possessions, permission has to be obtained before use. I would inquire at the Town Hall, asking the town supervisor or the Town Clerk or some other appropriate individual and try to get written permission. If you don't, sure as hell some animal rights wacko resident will be more than happy to make an issue of your hunting there and you could get dragged into an ugly public controversy. Another way to look at it is to consider it to be like any land that is not posted. It is still considered land that is not to be trespassed on without some authorization ........ posted or not.2 points

Arrived in Geneseo at 6 am . Walked 1/2 mile to stand and was settled in at 6:20 . Sunrise was 7:09 . Heard the 1st shot around 7:15 . Not much shooting happening . The only barrage of shots was a 4 shot blast . Anything else was a single shot here and there . I didn't see a thing ! My sister in law said she walked down to the South end of her Lane Way and thought she might kick something to me . She saw a fawn and a doe and went back up to her barn . I left the stand at 11 and went to my car . Had a sandwich and went to Walmart to use the john . Came back and took a crash nap until almost 2 pm . I had a plastic lawn chair stashed there so I set up at the south end of the lane way so I could see all the way down the lane and across the gully lot pasture . It was pretty quiet with only a couple of shots heard . It was just about 4 pm when I saw two deer way across the pasture . They were way upwind of me and there was some cold wind . They were feeding on the mowed pasture and the bigger one was working her way towards me . She started to slowly head toward the thick area by the creek and I figured I had better take a chance and shoot . I ranged her at 145 yards . I aimed for the shoulder with the NEF 25-06 single shot and she folded right up . The other deer looked around and kept feeding until I started walking up to get the ATV . Came back with the ATV and sled . Loaded the doe and hauled her over to another field to field dress her so the gut pile wouldn't be in the pasture . While I was field dressing the doe I could see a couple deer milling around a couple hundred yards down the field that I was in . I was surprised how little shooting there was on this opening day . The last shots I heard were about 40 minutes past legal time . Almost 5:30 and it was dark .2 points
