I have never had an accuracy concern with my Ithaca Deerslayer, but that 12 Ga. was never something I would call a pleasure to shoot. By contrast, I spent an hour up on my range "playing" with my .270, just loving every shot and seeing what kinds of tight groups I could get. It was truly recreation, and a familiarization process that I wish more deer hunters could (and would) experience with their deer guns. Compare that with the typical annual 5-shot verification group that I would painfully go through with that old 12 ga. Why 5 shots? ... because beyond that I would begin to bruise. Hopefully at the end of the 5-shot group I would be satisfied with the group, because anything after that involved increasing flinching and I would be in for an ugly re-sighting process that was absolute misery. That 12 ga. has not been out of the closet since they legalized rifles in Ontario County, and I haven't missed it for a moment.5 points

2014... He showed back up post season already shed and suffering from what appeared to be a bullet hole at the top of his shoulders. When I hung my cams in early July I was left wondering if he had made the winter given his poor condition prior to the onset of the cold/deep snow that Feb. and March brought. Well, In late July he answered this question and showed up with a very visible scar on his back... He dropped by on x-mas eve to let me know that he was still out there... This deer will never be a high scorer but is one of those cool character bucks. I look forward to seeing him next season as a 4 yr old. Given the mild start to winter and the fact that he is in much better physical condition than he was last year at this time...I think he might add some inches this coming year.4 points

Yeah no doubt. Bet they will even try to defuse this research. This has been a givin in this area. Take them out and you will have your game back and no the coyote will not just repopulate itself over night. It takes years before you have any numbers back again. I think the problem is that some think 2-3-5 yotes are a problem and i dont think thats the case. When you have them talking to each other on 3 different corners of your property you have a problem started.4 points

All I can say, is that after more than 40 years hunting a property. The more coyotes we have, the less deer we have. This is not a guess or estimate. This is boots on the ground, see with my own eyes. As the coyote population has exploded over the years, the deer population has decreased exponentially. There is no doubt that one population has effected the other. Only a fool would say otherwise.4 points

Saw few turkey this year and the "lonely hen" and her single poult...So this makes me very happy...and I do not believe I've seen them up on the hill this late in the season ever...By now they have settled down in the valley and return in late March.3 points

Well got a new LEM sausage stuffer from santa and tested it out today, worked out great. Made 25 lbs of fresh sausage and 20lbs of snack sticks. Both were a 50/50 mix of venison and pork. Used hog casing for the sausage and 21mm collagen casing for the snack sticks. The snack sticks are currently in the smoker for 12 hrs and the sausage we cooked up some tonight to try and they were delicious..3 points

I did this once on our piece in wheeler, ny about 6 years ago... throughout one spring and summer.. The camera picked up "51" fawns killed and brought into that den. anyone who thinks different can try it themselves. And that was a year coyotes didn't seem near as populated as they do like this year and last. I saw 17 coyotes my first 3 sits this archery season, and ended up killing 4 of them with my bow.. i have never seen coyotes like this before in the 20 years we have had our property... The deer numbers do seem down some, especially compared to 10 years ago, but they are not "horrible" here.... yet..3 points

Honest to Penelope, not too many police SWAT teams using open sighted 20ga smooth bores for THEIR task. I don't take my responsibility lightly, I choose the most accurate option available and I dare say I knew my shotgun/slug as good as ANYBODY. I shot plenty of slugs each year, testing different loads when they came out with new/better options. Rifled barrels, telescopic sights etc. are not going to be out shot by smooth bores and open sights at the extended ranges that the best slugs today are capable of. Ain't happening............ Fade in. The family is sitting around the dinner table after the Christmas feast, discussing current events, and having some laughs. The youngest person in the room is 20 yo, and it's a pretty intelligent group of doctors, dentists, nurses, college students, etc. The subject of gun control comes up and my SIL makes a comment: "Only a crazy person would think they need to carry a gun everywhere they go." Without really thinking, I made the mistake of saying: "I'm not crazy, but I'm carrying a gun right now." Oops. SIL kind of flipped out, like I was somehow an immediate threat. She's a school teacher, btw. She asked to see it, and I told her no. (I wasn't going to make it worse.) She asked me why I was carrying and I told her it's like putting on socks in the morning, I don't give it much thought any more. ... Things mostly returned to normal for the evening, except for the icy stare-daggers from the SIL. My brother called me last night to say they had made it back to New Hampshire okay after their holiday excursion. He chuckled when he let me know that his wife is still seriously pi***d at me. He's a family psychologist, so he'll work it out.2 points

The physical stuff isn't very appealing either..I was just commenting to friends the other day that my "boobs" keep getting bigger and my "nether region" keeps shrinking. That means if I live long enough, I'll eventually become a woman......An old, ugly woman...How depressing! However, the good news is that it's highly unlikely that I'll live that long...<<grin>>...2 points

You have a huge problem started my friend. The only reason you have deer is because you are in an area that has large numbers. That will change around that piece of ground soon enough. If they dont kill they will run them out of your area. I would be jumping on that problem this winter. Run the dogs every weekend and you will pile them up. Also make a few $ as i hear they are bringing decent $2 points

as we get old these things do occur. At 74 I sure misplace things such as the wife, bills, kids, and grandkids. But not the key things like car, guns and my trusty compound bows or stick bows. Can think back to were I shot that first deer and who I was with. It seems just like yesterday. But were did I put those keys for the master lock on the tree stand...???? it is a great day if you still see and say green side up. You look out and can still see the grass is green. My wife got me a cheap cell phone to take in the woods with me to call 911 if I fell or had to call the son in law to drag out a buck. Now that when it hit me that old fart shaving was me. so have a great day and green side up....2 points

To each their own. But my rifle is far more accurate than my old Deerslayer 2 with a slug barrel and scope. And my 7mm\08 did just fine at 30 yards in VERY thick cover on my buck this year. I'm sticking with my rifle, but like I said,to each their own.2 points

If you don't belong to the NRA... you are also part of the problem. Yeah I know there are other good organizations... which wouldn't exist if not for the NRA. $30 a year... $2.50 a month... less than a penny a day... can't be why you don't belong!2 points

I have a Bersa Thunder in 380. I love it. Very accurate and never had an issue no matter what I feed it. I believe they came out with a 9,40 and 45 in about the same size package. I think it was a Thunder Pro.1 point

The issue is that because some may not have coyote issue, or they think that Cornell is the absolute for NY ( Cornell studies cover about 1/7 of this state ). Just because your backyard is filled with the most adorable creatures, and they sparkle in the sun, doesn't mean other people don't have problematic predators.1 point

There are a lot of good makes and models out there.. For the type of hunting you are looking to do, I would go with 26" barrels... I have a weatherby in 20 gauge, that I have had for about 25 years.. Love it and love the fell and "swing" of the 26 inch barrels.. One thing you might want to look at is that often on GunBroker you can find some great older guns that are new "old stock"... some great SKB, Weatherby, Browning etc... guns that seem to be superior in quality to what you get today.1 point

I exorcize at home vs the gym, but yes, I plan on starting again very shortly, only the last 2 weeks have I slacked off enough to where I physically feel the difference. Plus all the holiday food that was at the ready just about everywhere i went did not help. I excorcize to keep my lower back in check due to a herniated disc last year.1 point

Don't I know it! ...Though I'm surprised I only gained back 4#'s...I actually think I lost muscle mass...Need to work those thigh muscles hard again...they are what keep my knees functioning...With the ACL being severed I really feel it when the muscles in the thighs and around the knees aren't at peak...I have the ecliptical at home.... but it's my bike work and weight training at the gym that really work my legs. I'll be back to 3 hours a day 3 days a week soon.1 point

Making the switch would make no sense to me you get more recoil, a worse trigger, more expensive ammo, less accuracy and less range. What do you gain with the 12 gauge?1 point

I believe it was very appropriate for Christmas, since it explains a lot of the controversy in America surrounding the holiday, Christianity and Christ. I find it hard to get through the holiday without constant reminders of it's "offensiveness" to certain people. I'll see if I can find something to post for New Year's Day that will be equally upsetting.1 point
