I posted in the "what other hobbies" thread that I am starting to get into some hobby blacksmithing. I figured I would post up and the work progresses. A little history. I have always thought is was very interesting and I remember as a kid wanting to spend time at the demonstrations whenever the family went to any historical period museums where they have characters living like they did in the day. Well needing one more hobby like I need ANOTHER hole in my head I did it anyway...lol. I did quite a bit of research and reading, joined an online forum that is world wide and spent hours reading there. I decided i would like to go the route of using a coal forge and that I wanted to build it myself. I pick up a damaged anvil from a member here and to my surprise my wife got me another one that is in very very good shape. I picked up a post vise too. So then I was in possession of the 3 main tools of a smith. I have to make everything fairly portable because I will basically be doing it in my driveway and will need to put everything away in the garage after each use. And (and this is a very big AND.) I need to keep the garage open enough so my wife can park in there during the winter. So as of this date the forge is built and I have run two fire in it so far. I am focusing on tooling and developing my techniques for now, but I want to dive into some blade making down the road. I'll try to keep this as kind of a diary of the progress and welcome comments and critiques. This is the forge completed. it has a variable speed electric motor and will reach forge welding temps with ease. You can see a couple tools for tending the fire that I made on the first day. A poker, a rake and a few hooks to hang on the forge table. I don't have a picture yet but on the second day I made my first set of tongs to handle the materials better than a pair of vise grips. I also made a rack for the anvil stump to hold all the hammers within easy reach.5 points

Does anyone want to guess why he is doing this now? It can be summed up in 2 words. Safe Act. Everything in here is already I the safe act already. When the safe act was thrust down our throats, it was a trial to see if it would!d hold up. Our king Andy was promised a shot at the white house. Well now2 years later, residents have become so complacent, they expect little resistance. As most sat on their collective butts, they waited to see what would happen. Well this is the result.4 points

I didn't see many saying NOT to use it. Like a bow or any weapon. There are limitations. If you accept them, understand them and select a suitable bullet then have at it.3 points

Law abiding hunters should never be restricted, because of what a criminal poacher MAY do! Scumbags will always find a way to be scumbags!3 points

I think the number of deer being poached with air bow would be very minute. Not enough to get your panties all up in a bunch over.3 points

Funny part is the places in this country that have the strictest gun laws, have the most shootings. You never hear that from the gungrabbers3 points

Well..... lets state the obvious here...If I was biting my tongue not to say what those thoughts were...Saying them now ...only leaves me with a sore tongue...Now that would make no sense to me at all. I will say yet again ,it had nothing to do with what is floating around in Robs, Vigils ,Shawnu's(based on his "likes") or even perhaps your head. There are many things, actually...that could be done and none of them have anything to do directly with Obama . No I won't hold your hand and guide you though them. Now lets point out one more obvious thing...My OP that started this whole 8 page discourse has developed a dialogue , for the good or the bad of it...given perspectives ...ideas..information excreta...All despite the absolute pointless and fruitless post of a couple of people...To that end I'm pleased2 points

I have never believed that the death penalty should be use as a form of vindication, retribution, or vengeance... it should be used only to eliminate that individual from ever being a threat to society again. In my Opinion...Hatred is no reason to kill in any capacity.2 points

He has trying to make the no fly list a means of taking away guns. They can put anyone on the no fly list just because basically they "feel" like it. Sorry culvercreek I didn't realize you said the same thing.2 points

The only problem I have with the death penalty is it isn't severe enough for the scum of the earth that are sitting on death row. I would be ok with the death penalty for more things too....Rape, child molestation etc. If your family member is murdered and there is clear proof of who did it that family that is already grieving shouldn't have to wait years to put their torment to rest. Our ridiculousness of our society has given criminals more rights than the free people. The scum of the earth that escaped from the prison upstate this summer is clear proof of this. How they are not just sitting in a freakin jail rotting is beyond me. Then we find out that guards aren't even aloud to shine a flashlight in their cell at night??? Give me a break....Your right to a goodnights sleep or anything other than a bed, toilet and meals was checked when you did the crime. (I would be ok with hard floor and a bucket)Deal with it...but no....now they can get a free college education while they are in jail.....who the heck comes up with these idea's..??2 points

Have you read them? Are the including the No-fly list provision? Have you read his mental health reporting provisions?2 points

IRS targeting, Benghazi obstruction, bypassing Congress, stripping . The wording of this last EO 1 ,2 or more firearms pose infindgement of the 2nd Amendment. He sits back while NY citizens are stripped of 2nd Amendment rights, it makes him guilty along with coumo. Just because it passed doesn't make it right, but its part of his agenda. Id rather give my business to the local guys and do so whenever I can. But it is nice to find just what you want online vs scouring every local shop for a lousy couple of boxes a certain type of ammo.2 points

Holy crap dude, while I am not on here complaining about all the stuff going on right now. I do believe you need to question and hold the government accountable. If not, it is a very slippery slope. It is our job to question the government in everything they do. They work for us, not the other way around.2 points

Don't forget to bring your pistol permit with you if buying any ammo that is sold in a pistol caliber. Most major retailers ask for it now, at least in my area.2 points

Haha great minds think alike. I haven't had a greasy burger since August or even a single French fry but my wife asked me what I wanted for dinner tonight. I had a craving and ended up at Five Guys and brought home burgers and fries for the whole family. Man was that tasty!!!2 points

The mentally ill used to be confined to institutes for their and our safety. Now we have 'care in the community' programs. A recipe for failure. SSRI drugs are also a huge problem no one wants to face up to. BigGuyNy There is nothing in the law that says you can't have ammunition shipped to an FFL. It is a choice made by some internet retailers & it is BS. This is tantamount to propaganda on their part! These are people that SHOULD be doing everything they can to support your rights but instead they are throwing a temper tantrum.2 points

Here we go again with the small caliber bow cartridges . Next is the head shots and exact placement ending in I have killed several deer with a 223 or my buddy did . Why not use a caliber that is going to knock the snot out of a deer !2 points

As growalot stated earlier in the thread it's a bit different from what your used to with your bow as the limbs hangout and catch on things when carrying it on your back .... just something to aware of. I've gotten hung up in the dark a couple times.1 point

I hope many of us view ourselves as not just hunters or sportsman, but outdoorsman. I hope many of us appreciate and value the peace and beauty of the great outdoors. I believe we should be even more appreciative as our pheasant fields are turned into walmarts, and our golf courses built around our creeks. Anyhow, I don't understand why we leave behind the garbage that we do. I constantly pick up water and beer bottles near the public land I hunt left behind by fellow hunters. I also don't understand why a mostly conservative group tends to be the loudest voice against environmental regulations aimed at reducing pollution. Regardless of your opinion on global warming, anything we can do to preserve our earth should be welcomed. What we've already done with regards to polluted soil and water is fact. I know many of us remember not being allowed to eat the fish out of the Great Lakes. Please guys, as a group we need to do our part to keep are woods and our waters clean. Find a local shop and give him a shot at getting what you want! My local guy can basically get anything in 3 days after I call him. It's not always as cheap but to me doing business locally is worth it. If I am asked for my permit while purchasing ammo I leave it on the counter and walk out! We have strict enough gun laws from the GOV. I don't need it from stores too. As far as the companies not selling to NY. Oh well it's hurting them more than me.1 point

I will apologize for the "other poster" comment. But, not the rest. You knew what you were thinking making this post and where it would end up. You and everyone else knows what you "meant". There is no assumption, well, maybe one. The assumption is that 'you assume' people wouldn't get what you did in fact imply. Say what you want, cover your backside. I get it. See, to keep in secrecy with your true thoughts and feelings, there's a word for topics like this ( pssst, it starts with a "T" ).1 point

257 wby mag is my deer pick. 300 win is a great round but I rather have a lighter gun in all capacities for whitetails in NY. I shoot a 300 and 7mm a few times a summer- just not want I take to the stand. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk1 point

My gripe in using a 223 is that ,in the right hands it is quite capable of killing deer cleanly . But then Joe Blow hears that someone kills deer with a 223 and thinks it's okay but he can't hit a barn from the inside with the doors closed . Not all shooters are equal if they don't practice a lot .1 point

Expanding background checks and fighting the flow of illegal guns are two separate issues. Perhaps some of the additional money Obama is calling for can be used to fight the flow of illegally obtained guns. As it is already known our Justice system is broken and many crimes go unpunished and many laws go unenforced. However we should all agree that doing everything that is possible to keep those who should not have guns from getting them should be a priority.1 point

Some people are into wine. I prefer good beer. Nearing 2500 different beers tried. Got into trading with out of staters for stuff we can't get here and vice versa. Only usually a couple at a time. I could stand to lose about 10-12 beer pounds lol. Guinness and Stella Artois are two of my least favorites. Some great local breweries putting some good beer out. Good to see.1 point

I don't understand what the thrill is to be trying to kill game with the least effective equipment, but there seems to be some reason why people want to try it. The .22 hornet is a legal deer caliber in areas of NYS where rifles are legal. I'm waiting for someone to try to rationalize using it for deer hunting. Of course, given perfect circumstances, the hornet will kill a deer, but what would even make anyone try?1 point

The point being if you stopped imports on those consumer products that were made with no emission controls ,the companies would have no choice but to either return to the usa creating jobs, or go out of buisness, or force emission controls to go global to sell its products. Will it sting for a bit yep, but long term jobs, and less pollution will be the outcome1 point
