  6. I thought it would be neat to show the steps that go into mounting a deer head. This will only be my second solo mount attempt ever. The first one still needs a few finishing items to complete it. I prepared the cape (fleshing, pickling, shaving and tanning) for this mount myself too. Here's a sneak peek. In order to get the cape to fit I had to make some slight alterations to the form. Looks like it will come together nicely!!!

  9. We got about 27 1/2" of snow here in Queens last night with some wind drifts up to 5 feet. I think dealing with snow in the city is a little different than dealing with it in the country Fourseason.

  11. Seeing how man is really the only means of effectively controlling coyote populations it only makes sense that hunting them is necessary... and making sure enough hunters get afield to help reduce populations is essential to maintaining a balance between predator and prey in any habitat. If the introduction of a bounty helps get to that balance that's a good thing and worth the "experiment". Some here would have us believe that the coyote has no purpose in the ecosystem and the only good answer is to eradicate them from all habitats by any means necessary... that approach is irresponsible not only to the animal, but to wildlife management in general. Promoting a bounty to help eradicate the coyote population, like some would have it, only furthers the promotion of foolish misinformation and untruth being passed around by many hunters.

  13. Ok, with much difficulty, I think I got the gist of this post. And, I believe that I might even agree with it. However at the risk of being called the "spelling and grammar police", I have to say that a little time re-reading some of these posts probably would have avoided a lot of head-scratching. Seriously, I got totally lost a few times as I struggled more with the wording than the topic. I still have not figured out what the thought was when the word "dump" was thrown in to several sentences. What the hell does that mean? I am not trying to claim perfection in the English language, but I do try to make my posts readable. And I do that by re-reading the message before poking the "Post" button and fixing some of the glaring confusion.

  19. What people do on their property IS their own business... they will have to suffer the consequences and live with whatever choices they make about how to manage their land. Promoting, in general, the eradication of coyotes based on misinformation and lack of knowledge about real coyote behavior is irresponsible. Claiming that coyotes have totally destroyed an entire habitat and all the wildlife in it anywhere in NY as fact is completely delusional, unfounded and should not be taken seriously. A position of controlling predator populations to maintain a balance in any habitat is common sense, that is not what is going on in your case.

  23. It was damn cold out there this morning but we went after em. Long story short, we kicked up two, had no shots at the first one and two of us missed the second one. We tried to get one for the dog, but no success this time. Chance did a good job and did get on the fresh tracks a yelping. Maybe next weekend. 4 miles in the books today. Here is a pic of Chance curled up on the ride home.

  25. I see the coyote in NYS and PA to be a predator at the top of his food chain. As such, being so naturally prolific, I see them as something that requires some form of population control just like any other species. I try to keep the image of cute little puppy dogs out of my thinking when it comes to letting an efficient predator explode in numbers without any other control. Hunting has been justified in society primarily because it is recognized that hunters have a necessary place in the food chain that can help regulate animal numbers. I believe that the same justification can be applied to coyotes. However, it appears that since coyotes have no value as table fare, and the fur prices are not motivating hunters to become that population check, maybe a little cash incentive in the form of a bounty might insert hunters back into the food chain to control numbers of a species that currently has no control. So if for no other reason, I would like to see them go ahead and treat this bounty program as a lab experiment to see exactly how effective (or not) such a program can be here on the eastern side of the country.

  31. I'd like to see all the evidence of coyotes decimating an entire 1000 acre piece of land in NY... just one 1000 acre piece devoid of any wildlife because of coyotes. That seems to be the motivation for a certain onslaught on coyotes. I know of one person in NY that has made that claim, but nothing concrete to back it up. Legend has it that after all the coyotes were killed, two years later the wildlife began to re-appear just in time for the re-appearance of the coyotes as well. I could be wrong.. I might have just seen it in a Disney movie. Yeah, I think I'm wrong on this... it seems a little too far fetched.

  40. Maybe so, but I have seen no evidence of rutting in this area (bucks trailing does, flehmening, lockdown, etc.) Buck sparring is simply bachelor group pecking order establishment and challenge. Interesting that often there is a spike buck, or a yearling toady, that is close too, sometimes even locking horns with its bigger brothers at the same time. A couple more photos of the skirmish.

  41. I don't think it was weak. I think it was dumb. The videographer claims he videoed a wild bird but there is something in there about edited. I mention this because I can accurately age the bird in the opening shot. I cannot accurately age the bird hanging onto the chamois. The opening bird is not more than a year old. The bird that attacked the chamois is a young bird. It might be the same bird, if not, it is not more than 2 years old. I think it was a young bird that made a big mistake. Golden eagles kill ungulates rarely. They do so by knocking them off cliffs. They also grab their backs - like this bird did - and hang on until the deer, or whatever, drops of exhaustion.

  45. The wonders of the internet, thanks to Al Gore....... I Googled Jim Kassman & Jim's Sport Shop and found that it's been 20 years since he passed away. Damn..... "James F. Kassman, 66, who operated Jim's Sport Shop in Clarence, died Sunday (Feb. 25, 1996) at Mitchell Campus of Hospice Buffalo, Cheektowaga, after a brief illness. The Hamburg native graduated from Hamburg High School in 1948 and had lived in West Seneca for 30 years. He was a staff sergeant in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. An avid fisherman and hunter, he provided financial and program support for several area sports groups, including the Northtowns and Southtowns Walleye Associations, the Lake Ontario Fishing Association and the annual Pepsi Challenge Fishing Tournament on Lake Erie." It's funny what you remember about a person or place from your past. Jim enjoyed smoking a pipe and quite often he'd be burning some Borkum Riff and BS'ing with a customer when I'd walk in. Like I mentioned, he was one of the first around the area to rent hunting videos. Boy there was some great early ones and some real crap too!! $3 a night I think it was....WELL before all the Hunting shows on TV now. It was ground breaking stuff back then. Jim wasn't too much of a hunter as I remember. Seems he wanted to hear about all my hunts when I went in....at one point he sent a picture of me and a pretty big buck into whatever was the state wide equivalent of the NYOutdoors News we have now. Another thing I recall about Jim's shop was that he had a tannery that he worked with that would take salted raw deer hides in and make garments from them of your choosing. I sent a number of hides in and about all I have left are one or two pairs of fleece lined buckskin choppers. I still have two tanned hides (no hair) from back in the day, one gun and one bow. The bow one is cool because I used a Razorbak5 head to kill the buck and you can see the entrance/exit holes in the hide still. Those had to have been tanned almost 30 years ago. Man does time fly........... OP.......sorry to derail/sidetrack this thread. Once I get wound up, I can't stop.
