  1. Well. Long story. Lol. Started at Plan A, got to Plan F before I was done. Nothing close to me on the roost. Finally found 2 Long Beards in a bowl but boy were they call shy. Plan E I set up across a field from them, Avian X decoy out. They gobbled but never moved. Swung all the way around them, got below them about 100 yards. Set up in the rain. They still wouldn't leave that bowl. Saw 6 jakes across a road, probably 600 yds away. They gobbled at me every time. Sure enough they cross a road and walk right to me. Unreal! These were the 23 Jakes I've called into gun range this year. I usually dont shoot them so I let them go. Well don't they see something and start alarm putting as they head right for the LB's!!!! WTF!!! Everything goes quiet. I call. Nothing. Now I'm ticked! I text Sandra Pirog saying "I'm shooting the next Jake twice!!!!" Lol. I call. Nothing. I look to my left and at a dead run to me here comes the 2 LB's, white heads, beards swinging. I'm left handed. My muzzle is 180 degrees from them. I wait till they get 20 yards and start yelping as I swing my gun. The two birds split, one goes to the right. Red dot finds him at 42 yds and BOOM! Game over!!!! 1 1/8" spurs 10 1/2" beard. Scale says 18lbs but felt heavier. Good 3 year old!

  6. I havent had much luck with the turkeys so far, but Sunday I got out on Conesus Lake with a buddy and we had a pretty good afternoon. It was a little slow after the cold front that came through the night before, but we caught some decent pike and largemouth. Two of the largemouth weighed over the 5lb mark.

  7. Many folks go away to Mexico , Dominican Republic and other vacations spots and buy " Cuban" cigars often the famed Cohiba . Now counterfeits out number real ones by more then 10 to 1 and time after time friends have brought me fakes, and years ago I fell for them as well, here's my advice. First off there are NO glass top Cohiba boxes !!! Oh they sell millions of them ,ALL are fake like this one, which by the way was bought in CUBA . The only real Cohibas sold in Cuba are sold in Gov. shops , not street corners or back rooms , by " employees " who get " deals" on them ....... Cohibas cost around $20 a piece ( and some Way more ) depending on the size that may be a clue when you,pay $100 or so for 25 . What you are buying may be a decent cigar that was Rebanded, or often banana leaves and floor sweepings, enjoy ! Cohiba cigars are made perfect , the people working the sorting tables can tell 60 shades of the same wrapper and groups them accordingly, the caps and foots are perfect with a 3 ring cap noticeable . Look at this cigar , way to vainy and lumpy, the cap is crooked . But the band tells the story, those little white squares? The top row should have black spacing above it , never will it be cut though the squares or this close to,them like here . Where the band is glued together , the spacing between the squares and the line up should be perfect , here they over lap and run at an angle . Avoid glass top boxes , buy only from large well established cigar shops or Gov. Shops ( in Cuba) , look the cigar over it should be smooth , solid , and prefect in every way and all the cigars in the box should be the same length , shade and shape, and look the band over. I post this because so,many ( most are getting fakes ) these were bought by a camera man who was in Cuba filming a game, he was thrilled to pass a couple out to,select friends back home. I did not have the heart to tell him, but at the same time these people are not getting a treat .

  8. I always enjoyed your posts. And I am sure you gave more brightness to this site than you know. It seems the world we live in now has a certain percentage of people who are quick to criticize and have no empathy for others. Perhaps to cover up their own shortcomings, wich are usually numerous. Hope you reconsider and stay or come back after a period of time. Until then, shoot straight, and keep your top nott.

  11. A soft cluck or two then nothing till fly down time. A wing flap( the last part of Turkey Wing works well 7 primary feathers (chest slapping) ,then a pause and a scratch in the leaves.. but do in a rythem of scratch,scratch,.... scratch.. or 1,2 .... 3. Wait and see what they do if you hear a hen just imitate her and step (call) on top of her to get her mad, she can bring in the whole group..

  12. Lake erie is a dangerous lake, I would stay in the harbors unless you bought a sea kayak. . One guy fishing in a canoe was blown across the lake to canada and it took him 3 months to walk back to silver creek to find his belonging s sold as he was assumed dead.. granted it was 18 40s but storms on the lake can be deadly..

  13. This morning was the 4th time out for me this season. Haven't seen a gobbler yet!!! Only heard 2 one morning early, and then complete silence. Appears that they are henned up and don't want to play!!! Going to try another spot in the morning, if nothing but silence again, will wait an entire week before heading back out. Tuff sledding so far

  19. Plenty of unarmed protests have been met with an armed response too! Remember Kent State? Threatening the government's agenda in any way is very dangerous. No matter how it turns out, the government will never take the blame.

  20. fun ain't it. When you get so excited you lose control of pressure in your fingers on the striker. Like you've never called before. I thought I heard a grouse drumming when the woods erupted with gobbles the other morning. Nope , that was my heart thumping. There's some great advice on this subject so far. Good responses people

  21. The big issue is that the uninformed or those who are in the middle are to easily swayed by the meanderings of too many people in high places that have no clue as to what game conservation is. That game conversation directly relates to land conservation, and vise versa. These same people who are against hunting would crap a gold brick if hunting was banned and a bear tore the crap out of their house looking for food while they were on vacation in the tropics, because there was no hunters to keep numbers down. Then you have the dunces. You know who they are. I was in FYE last fall to buy a CD ( yeah, they still make those ! ). I had a Realtree hat on and a Mossy Oak sweatshirt. This dunce walks up to me and out right asks me if I am a hunter. I said yea. He goes into a spiel about animal rights. I smiled and when he was done, I asked him very politely where he though the leather jacket and shoes he had on came from and waked away. The web makes it way to easy for the masses to be mis informed, and be baited into following agendas rather then doing any real research on their own. Because after all, "I read it on the web it's true.".

  23. I have a retooled plan every morning. I get closer (sometimes) but to shots yet. Hitting the woods in the morning with plan number 5…or 6?? good news is the birds are thick this year.

  24. My plan failed.........................if it was a war, I'd be waving the white flag. One step out of camp and I new it'd be tough, the wind was stiff! Oh well, might as well continue with my plan. I made a long sweep around the backside of where they should be roosting. Everything went good on the approach and I sat down in the dark, waiting on the first gobbles. It was a long wait...........nothing on their own are even with my prodding. Dang........nothing with the owl hooter or crow call, the new mouth call will have to do it. CRAP, I left it in the truck! At the end of the day yesterday I set it on the passenger seat of my truck while I guzzled water. I made a few swipes on the box and got nothing. I hauled my butt up and out, grabbed the mouth call and stuffed it in my pocket. Plan B............start hitting other known areas. Heard three or four gobbles from a bird way to my north. There was a deep ravine between us so I decided to go high and swing around to his side of the ravine. Never heard the SOB again! At one other spot I heard ONE gobble after a twenty minutes of walking and calling. The problem is he gobbled to my CROW call, not one of my turkey calls! A live crow had just drifted over my head and I thought I'd rock his world with a couple quick blasts. Ha, the joke was on me when the turkey sounded off maybe 125 yards away. I stuck it out for thirty minutes without making a single call, thinking he may be coming in silent. After the 30 minute wait I let rip with a few quiet slate calls. Nothing....... OK, mouth call. Nothing.......... That my friends signaled the end of my weekend turkey hunting. It was now about 10:00am and my dogs were barking.

  26. Shot a jake on Tuesday and this longbeard today at 6:15. Had my friend Zach (11) with me on his second turkey hunt. Heard some talk at 5:40 and a few gobbles. This guy showed up silent at the other end of the field and came into a single hen decoy. 25 yard shot w/ Mossberg 935 w/ #6 Longbeards ended his morning. Good luck to everyone still at it.

  27. So True! But they also dont have seasons that last into months. 30 day season for all implements and its over, with no guns in any part of the rut. Bring that type of season on and Ny would be in the top 10 best places to hunt...Instead of the worst.

  28. I shot this bird at 5:39am, 10" beard, 1" spurs, 21.5 pounds. Tagged out and very happy I don't have to get up at 4am anymore. Unfortunately, while cleaning the bird I was not careful with the game shears and sliced my right middle finger open. I needed 5 stitches to close it up. Not a good way to end the day!

  33. As I am sure you know, often killing a good bird is a matter of BEING there on that one day, or perhaps the 2 hours, that he happens to be WITHOUT hens... The more time you can spend in the woods, the better your chances are of being there during that often brief period of time when that bird is vulnerable.

  37. even breast meat doesn't cook the same as a sodium stuffed butterball. smoked turkey legs or the casserole/pot pie are good. as long as you cook it with the mentality that it's a tough piece of meat it shouldn't come out too bad. you've got to slow cook them in liquid of some kind for smoked legs you're just exposing them to smoke for flavor and not crisping them at all. just straight up trying to roast a leg will leave it tough.

  43. So we went out again this morning adjusted our set up from yesterday set up decoys waited for the sky to turn grey and started to lightly cluck...... Within minuets we had gobbling no more than 50 yards away.... It turned out to be 3 jakes all rooster together.... After talking back and forth with them for 20 min or so they decided to leave the roost... They flew down to our right... Gobbled a few more times and then ignored my calls and went in the other direction never to be seen again.... Any Idea what we did wrong ? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  44. If I had the writing ability to put this morning in words, you absolutely would not believe it. In a VERY small nutshell, I had a pair of adults inside of 40 yards for a good portion of 4 (four) hours. I had a head pass by at 25 yards and couldn't get on him due to too thick of a spot. All morning I was in crappy spots because of posted land/neighbor relations etc. I moved three times over 600 yards and they'd come to each spot. I had two at 40 or less yards and a couple branches were in the way. I THOUGHT they'd come 6" more but no dice..... Another spot they were going absolutely crazy, gobbling to motorcycles, cars, crows, gun shots et. I couldn't get them to come into the precise spot I needed. Maybe I can get them figured out better in the morning; I have a plan.

  45. Patience finally paid off at about 9:30 this morning... 20.2 pounds on the digital scale, 10 inch beard and 1 inch spurs... Never heard a gobble until about 9:15... Every now and then even a blind hog finds an acorn...

  46. A few first light gobbles but tom flew down with hens and they wanted nothing to do with me.. had 5 jakes come in silent at 730.. 4 left..
