  1. Thanks for asking, that's a good question. The National Rifle Association is the major advocate for gun rights in the American political arena. That means, when politicans begin to lobby to take away the right to own a certain gun or magazine, the NRA will be there to lobby against that. They will stand up for all gun owners. There other great organizations that stand up for gun owners rights. The NRA is the strongest and my choice. My membership....... along with the 4 million other members makes that possible. There are strength in numbers. Being a membership is a privilage. I realize that gun owners need to be united and make a stand against those who would like to take them all away. Hunting, sport shooting and owning a gun for self defense is dear to my heart. I'm on board for safe guarding that right. There are many other benefits to being a member of the NRA as you can see by visiting the NRA site. But being on the team that stands up for gun owners is the real reason for me. I hope this helps. GM

  3. Meet Griswold - Santa brought him for the boys. I just looked at doewhackers picture of bunny hunting. This guy is not quite field ready but he chases around the pheasant wing pretty good, i had him at the gun club during trap sessions gun fire didnt bother him - If the snow is not too deep I will get him for some romps in the woods. For now we are happy that he goes to the door to go out.

  4. Elmo hit the nail square on. We are well on our way to tyranny. Once the governing class considers themselves of higher status than the citizens to whom they are accountable, the path is clear.

  9. A good friend of mine and his wife do NOT allow anyone to hunt on their property . They are not anti hunters they just won't let anyone hunt the apple farm . Neighbors on 2 sides hunt and have been given permission to retrieve deer from the farm if necessary . Anyway several of our church group were at their home yesterday for brunch . My friend showed me where the deer mowed down their Swiss Chard and I laughed . He said it wasn't funny . I told him it would be funnier if the deer came during the summer months and ate the whole damned garden and that he needs someone to come over and thin out a few of those deer . That will never happen ! He said the deer never touched the parsley and I told him no one eats parsley . He asked me a couple years ago why I never offered him any venison and I told him that I would give him some venison from the 1st deer I got from his property .

  14. It's true. They have not changed their minds about eliminating all guns. They have just changed tactics and have found it much easier to accomplish their goals in a piece-by-piece fashion. Magazines, ammo, certain rifles ..... it is so much easier to turn gun owner against gun owner to achieve their gun elimination one piece at a time. Let's face it, that's what all this action against the so-called assault rifles is all about. Many gun owners have no use for those guns and are easily talked into joining the antis in demanding elimination and confiscation of those rifles. I've seen it here on the pages of this forum. I've seen those that would pacify the anti-gun lobby by sacrificing modern sporting rifles. And it is simply based on the fact that it is the "other guys rifle, not mine". All this talk about magazines is the same kind of "divide and conquer" tactic. I think it works, and that the anti-gun people have stumbled onto a successful tactic that will get them where they want to get if we don't start to smarten up. The NRA has been criticized for their "not-give-an-inch" stance. Well, anyone who's paying attention to todays anti-gun techniques might just catch on to the fact that it is piece-by-piece confiscation that has made the biggest strides for the anti-gunners in recent years.

  15. I agree. I've said it so many times, I am beginning to sound like a broken record. You don't have to agree with every statement and issue of a advocacy group in order to have huge value in your membership. Look at the over-all package. You will never find a single organization that provides all views that you can buy into 100%. But if you start avoiding all organizations that don't fit all your views exactly, you basicly will find yourself without any representation or influence at a governmental level, while the opposition makes huge strides by being well financed, and well organized and no where near as fragmented as hunters and gun owners seem to be.

  16. I made the pulled venison yesterday. I used some backstrap (YIKES) from last year. Thawed it overnight and trimmed it up. Placed 4 pieces (2/3 of the backstrap from one deer), rubbed with a mix I had on hand and a HUGE onion into the crock pot. Then put enough water in to come half way up the meat. Cranked it up to high and started drinking heavily. (I'M ONLY KIDDING!) 8.5 hours later I pulled it out, dumped the juice, and shredded the meat. Put it back into the crock pot with some bbq sauce for another 30 minutes. I use the KC Masterpiece brand and think it is great. Got some good rolls from Wegmans and enjoyed the hell out of it. Really a great recipe. It was great last night and AMAZING today for lunch!! Thanks Deerthug!! PS......The entire family enjoyed it.

  17. You get the government you deserve. Same people on this board voted for Obama probably voted for the Democratic State Senator/Assemblyman. Not that a NY Republican is any less liberal. I ain't turning in anything. Period.

  18. For most the big reason for not joining the NRA is because they're constantly asking for money.. or they call the house too much... or you didn't get the magazine they promised for your membership... the only real reason for not joining is because they aren't doing their job. Which they do and do well... better than any other organization. Standing together as NRA members is are best option against this onslaught

  19. One thing that should be understood is that protecting gun manufacturers is protecting our 2nd amendment rights. Needless to say the gun manufacturers are a prime target of the antis and also are in a constant struggle with the gun-banning contingent of our legal system. One of the strategies of the antis is to bombard the manufacturers with lawsuits, regulations, and other activities that cause the manufacturers to defend themselves and pass on the costs of those defenses to us .... the gun owners.

  25. Your welcome Red! Too bad we didn't score a horn today, but we'll get on 'em soon I promise you! Sorry you had to get your saw all stinked up on that lil 3pt, but I appreciate it. Which reminds me, I better get them outta my pack. Joe, the snow is starting to lay down some here but it's still pretty deep in the open woods and fields. Under the pines and hemlocks we looked through today, there was about 8" which is considerably less than the surrounding drifted areas. Burty- I've always been more of a loner when it comes to this stuff. It was nice to hike with a partner who had such a high excitement level! Great to know there's still guys out there that enjoy the outdoors, even if the goals set forth for that day aren't reached. I've had some VERY bad experiences with internet forum members in the past. I was happy things went different this time!

  27. I did not want to imply that Eddie was wrong either...Perhaps not being quite so careful with primers will someday come back and bite me in my scrawny little butt... I certainly make sure my hands are oil and grease free ...I'm just saying that in the process of dropping the primers from the box on the bench, picking them up with my gnarled little (clean) dwarf fingers and placing them in the priming arm on my press, and then pressing them in (always with safety glasses) I HAVE NEVER HAD A PRIMER FAIL TO FIRE. Perhaps I have just been lucky.<<grin>>...

  29. Well seems like it's been forever since my last antler so decided to suck it up today and head out to some public ground never mind the snow. Todays hike was a little different than any other I've been on before. Today I had company of forum member Red! I met Red here, and his enthusiasm about shed hunting got my attention so much that I wanted to be part of him finding his first real shed antler. I wont bore you all with the meet and greet details, but let me say he's a stand up dude I enjoyed hiking with ! I forgot to get some pics of the GIANT bear skull he brought for show and tell. Awesome! On to todays hike.... our first find was a shed dead head. Nothing crazy. I assume not much more than a spiker or forky. This kill was VERY fresh. I believe winterkill already. We kicked the snow around a bit trying to uncover his headgear but no luck. They are there close by but too much snow to waste any time on them right now. Hiked a few more spots for a total of 5hrs or so but not a shed in sight. Sign was spotty, so we focused on those areas where we at least found some. Didn't take long, and another dead head lied before us. Another VERY fresh 3pt. My biggest fears heading into the season are starting to come true. Winter appears to be taking a toll on these deer in this area. Antlers- 2 Sets- 1 Dead bucks- 5 Dead doe/fawns- 0

  35. I hunted with my recurve a few seasons back. I thought I was ready for the extra challenge of going totaly instinctive. I had decided to keep any shots within 15yds, but preferred inside 10yds. One thing I learned, is how many compound shot oppertunities @ 30yds eventually turned into oppertunities I felt comfortable with at point blank ranges. While I did get an arrow into a doe that year, I was never able to recover her. As the traditionalists say "Aim small, miss small". I didn't quite have that concept figured into my practice routine with my recurve. I was content to put my groups in an 8 inch circle and accept the fact I would have some "fliers" simply because I didn't have a sight. As I watched that deer run off with my shaft sticking out of her paunch, my heart sank and I really began to question my own ethics about pursuing game in a manner I had such limited experience with. In hindsight, I realize now how much dedication goes into trad archery, and how little I put into my endeavor. I plan on picking it up again some day when I have more time to dedicate to it in the off season. That very same night, after returning home from that hunt, I made a trip to the pro-shop and purchased my current compound set up.

  36. The NRA is not a pro hunting organization. In fact a lot of the stances they take have been anti-hunting, especially out west. And don't kid yourself, the NRA is a lobbying group to protect the gun manufacturers, they could really care less about the citizens. Regardless I continue to join, but it is pretty obvious they don't need any additional members the way they piss money away. And that is the only reason there is to join right? To give them more money?

  37. i've always shot compounds. I picked up a Bear Archery Super Kodiak and got into it. My normal compound draw is 29" and I went with a 60" AMO length bow so it doesn't "stack" as much. a recurve as people have stated builds poundage at a certain rate and more quickly the longer the draw, or its stacks. the standard weight is measured at 28". If you're somewhere close to that I would get a 45# or 50# bow to start off learning how to shoot. any heavier and you'll have a hard time with form and anchoring consistently. you can setup up a recurve just like a compound or you can shoot it instinctively. To shoot instinctively you'll want three fingers under the arrow or 1 above and 2 below. You'll want to pick up a finger tab or glove. on the string is usually just a knock, somewhere around level to 7/8" inch high depending on tune, and your preference of silencers. it's important to get a bow stringer to string your bow instead of trying to bend it over through your legs or some other way to prevent limb twisting and keep things straight. just about every mfg makes carbon arrows you can buy with a wood looking finish and feather fletching to get passed the riser shelf. a shop should help you tune the arrows to the bow so they shoot straight and not right or left. pick an arrow shaft with a .400" spine (for the above setup) and put tip on there to have a total arrow weight around 600 grains or more to give you enough penetration on game like whitetail. you can add or subtract twists from the string to change braceheight and at a certain braceheight the bow will shoot quietest and well. that shop will then cut a little off the full length arrow at a time until it shoots a bullet hole through paper (good right to left). each time they'll use reuseable hot melt glue for the insert so it can be put back in. when you get shooting enough and hunting ready pick a cut on contact broadhead like a NAP hellrazor or Magnus stinger of your same tip weight. that about sums it up i'd think to get started.
