  6. My daughter connected on a jake this morning! Her first! She missed one last year, so this one built up her confidence and gave her some redemption!! Possibly the most exciting/suspenseful turkey hunt I've ever had and her getting it was the icing on the cake! Talk about highs and lows and we both learned a few lessons!

  7. How accurate are the results when many parents tell their children that it's a test for their teachers, not them? Or... it's a difficult test so my child is going to "opt out"? What does that teach children of today? When life gets difficult, we all know that you can't just opt out. Believe me, I am all for holding teachers accountable, but there needs to be some accountability on the students part as well.

  8. I wasn't gonna post, but seeing the pics again sure puts a proud smile on my face! Plus, thought a good story might give others a little "fix" until you can get out there yourselves! We hunted the first day of the youth season, but didn't hear or see anything. Didn't have a whole lot of hope for the second day either. We were set up in a blind on top of a hill, in an apple orchard, where turkeys have sometimes been roosting on the wooded hillside below. I owl hooted a few times just before daylight to see if I could get a gobbler to respond, to give us some hope. No response. I gave random calls from 5:40-6:45, but no answer. Didn't seem like there was a turkey around for miles! I tried to remain optimistic and told my daughter that just because they weren't gobbling, didn't mean that they weren't there. We were both discouraged, but I didn't want her to know how I felt... At 6:45, we heard yelping coming from straight down over the ridge on the wooded hillside. She said, "Well yeah, but it's just a hen." I told her that it could be a hen with a gobbler in tow OR it could be a gobbler yelping, which I've seen/heard before. Everytime I called, it excitedly yelped back. It sounded like it was going to come up into the orchard to our right. All went silent for ~30 min. She was just sure the turkey kept walking out the hillside and wasn't going to come in, since it shut up. I told her how they come in silent sometimes, just to try to keep her hopes up. Finally, a jake appeared in the orchard ~80 yards to our right. He saw our decoys (jake and 2 hens) and heard my calling, but simply walked back down over the hill from where he came. WTH?? I called a few more times, but no response. Figured I would throw something at him that I've never really tried before, a fighting purr. Well, let me tell you, the hillside exploded with gobbles then! The next thing I know, we see 2 bright red heads looking over the hill at our decoys. Then, they went back down over the hill again!l! They started gobbling like crazy, walking out the hillside, just over the ridge from us. I told my daughter that they were probably just circling the decoys. I told her where I expected them to top the ridge and where to point her gun. Sure enough, a few minutes later, they appeared 40 yards away! Unfortunately, after patterning her gun, I'm not comfortable with the pattern beyond 30 yards, so that is our limit. The jakes strutted and gobbled their heads off in the wide open, from 40-45 yards for ~30 minutes! What a thrilling show for my daughter to witness!! They wanted to come in so bad, but I think my jake decoy, which was still bigger than them, was just intimidating them! I had a bobbing head head decoy that I have fishing line tied to, so I can tug on it a little for some movement. They would start in, then would hesitate, and turn around and walk off a little ways! Everytime they did this, I started purring and that would get them fired up again, gobbling like crazy and inching closer to the decoys! I bet we did this 10x, but they must have thought they were "turning the hens (decoys) on" with the purring they were doing! LOL Finally, one jake cautiously took a few steps closer to the decoys. Must have been peer pressure, because the other one (more cautious), decided to follow. When they crossed the 30 yard line, I knew it was "go time" and told my daughter to that I would tell her when to shoot. At 25 yards, the more cautious one again started to back off and turned the other jake too. I told my daughter to shoot! She did and down he went at 8:10am! That was such an exciting and suspenseful hunt! One we will never forget!! She missed a jake last year in the same spot, so this one sure built her confidence back up, gave her redemption, and reinforced the fact that you gotta have PATIENCE!!! LOL

  9. Very interesting. The pattern in my daughters Rem 870 20 gauge looks similar to those posted, using the same loads too. Not "great", but they'll certainly do out to 30 yards. My dad always used 4 or 5 shot, so that's all I've ever used. I was reading on other forums about a lot of people using 7 1/2 shot 3" mags and saying they are great for turkeys. To me, I guess it just sounded like too small of shot size for turkeys, so I never considered it (Geez, I never use anything smaller than #6 for even squirrels). I would feel more comfortable seeing more shot in my daughters patterns. I've been on the fence about trying #7 1/2, but I think you might have just convinced me!!

  10. Sure, but there is a difference between asking the kids to do their best and straight out lying to them. We had already told her that the tests will not count against her, so she knew to ask after the (Ill call them a staff member) told her that. Other kids were visibly upset by it from what she told me. What drives me nuts is that they have been doing nothing but preparing the kids for the tests for well over a month. Thats over a month that should be spent teaching them things they will find useful down the road, not coaching them on how to make the teacher look better. Between this nonsense and the constant focus on sports, etc its no wonder why our educational system is so shoddy.

  15. I touched on some of the reasons anti's take the stand they do in post #36. Why would a french filmmaker come here to make an anti-fracking film? has clear cutting the rain forrest become too passe? there is money to be had as an anti fracker as well. i cant tell you why each person is against fracking, but if you ask 100 of them, ill bet 95 cant even tell you what fracking is. and thats why its tough for me to believe what comes out of there camp. I like hard facts when making decision, and thats whats missing out of the anti argument. its all emotion no facts with one exception, there will be a lot of truck traffic. Every time there is a concern or question the gas companies are correcting it. i have yet to find one valid claim where the gas companies have created a problem, then turned tail and said oh well your problem. it would be bad for business. Road rebuilding, frack water treatment plants, replanting of right aways these are things that that the gas companies do to make sure the residents are affected as little as possible, leaving the area better than they found it. these companies have a well documented track record available for your viewing, and they pay for what they harvest. if anyone can come up with hard facts disputing this i will listen, its just the antis have yet to do it. and as i stated in my first post, with the drop in natural gas prices, and gas friendlier states welcoming them in the risk reward factor for NY is quickly waning, and with every delay imposed the opportunity diminishes greatly, ultimately giving the antis the 'win', leaving ny'ers in the stale stinking economic environment we find ourselves living everyday with no foreseeable end.

  23. the more I read that statement, the more I'm blown away, for you to even suggest that one hunter is entitled to the hunting woods more than another is beyond comprehension....any sensible statement you ever made on here is totally forgotten by that one statement...what a douche.

  27. An environmental impact study is a fair request, as is a posted bond to cover future cleanup costs. A proprietary company product is not uncommon in any industry. just read the back of any food container, ' and other natural ingredients'. nature produces some of the most toxic substances known to man, but we blissfully consume them everyday. if the proprietary component of frack fluid is of concern this would be revealed in an impact study. good idea. thats how decisions on this matter should be made, not the emotional drama that most anti fracking groups use as a tactic to move their agenda. At the local level (within a township) the residents should be able to make the decisions that affect them and their views, but should not affect how my town makes its decisions. I respect the fact that a gas well will never be put in the commons in ithaca, but people in ithaca have no business telling the people in lets say the town of lisle, what they can or cannot do with their land. Its not the wealthy that bother me, their motives are always the same, black and white, return on investment, and can be delt with in that way. Its the special interest groups that annoy me. They come in and attempt to make a decision for me thats in my best interest, i think im old enough and hopefully gained enough wisdom through the years to make up my own mind as to whats best for me and my family.

  28. Just looked at a map..... yep were still in the U.S. not europe. I do believe the purpose of ANY company is to make money. That is how my paycheck is covered every week. You're typing away on a pc or mac... im sure it dosent bother you that microsoft and apple make a fortune every time you log on.... If the industry has no moral boundries then how do you explain this... http://wnbf.com/new-pennsylvania-plant-cleans-frack-water/. if the industry has no morals issues such as this would not be being addressed. So what is it you do for a living? im sure there are people that think your billable hours or products are thievery, but i believe that you have to charge what you charge to make your mortgage payments, feed your kids, buy a rod to go fishing. This is america, this is what we do, this is what built this country.

  29. My son and I went out this morning and had a little action. He could have taken a shot at Jake but if it was 10-12 pounds and he decided not to shoot it. We also played with another bird in a different spot but did not get a look at him. It was fun but very cold with rain, ice rain and snow.

  30. My nephew scored on a jake this morning. Called in a big ole longbeard with ten hens but he followed the hens. Two jakes came in and at 25 yards that was close enough. Bird has a 4.5" beard with 1/2" spurs and weighed 17.2 lbs. it was a real quiet morning till 10 am when I got a hen fired up. Thirty minutes later the toms came in.

  32. Problem a lot of times with this type of testing is that teaching to test becomes more important than teaching and understanding the subject. There is a difference.

  33. I can tell you personally that the NYS ELA state test that my 8th grade students just finished this week was a grueling three days! The test consisted of 9 long passages with 72 multiple choice questions, 3 more passages and 3 short responses with and essay on day 2, and 3 more passages with 5 short responses and another essay for day 3. Grow, the sad part is that this test is for the teachers. It has no effect on the student what so ever. The test scores a student receive does not reflect the type of classes they take the following year. This test, which many parents are telling their children not to worry about or having them "opt out" is the same test that teachers are being elavuated on. If we truly want to improve the educational system, we should follow the model of other countries that have surpassed the United States. Most of those countries do not have standardized testing and they also tract their students into two categories. One as college ready and the second prepares them for a trade. In my honest opinion, today belief that every student should go to college is flawed. I have friends that have become incredibly successful from learning a trade and never attending college.

  34. ahhhh..... there is the quandary. we must not trample on the property rights of those who wish not to have drilling, but what about the property rights of those who wish to use their natural resources? how often do you hear of this much protesting when a gravel bed is put in? when the dredges dig down to the water table and open it up to the atmosphere, the potential for contamination is tremendous, and often unmonitored. i find it disgusting when a property owner (and the state) decide to pick a section of woods and clear cut it, with complete disregard for erosion. and the eyesore of the madison county wind farms it not appealing. But the fact of the matter is its not my land. that is what the property owners decided to do. so be it.

  36. Belo: I guess im just a fan of the razor because I like the idea of the broad head being just one giant razor that balances nicely. The first deer I ever killed was with a 75g muzzy and it worked great, and I have a friend who shot a buck with a chisel tipped rage this year that did a nice job considering the shot was a bit forward, but I have never liked the balance of a trocar tip, they feel heavy in the front. I have shot two deer with the the razor tipped rage, the first of which that was a doe who took it right through the front shoulder, so I have good faith in the razors bone cuttin ability.
