  1. We got a double on may 2nd at 930!!!! Killed 2 out of 3 toms called in hunting on public land in schoharie county. My bird was 19# and the other 17#. Mine had an 8 in beard and 7/8 in spurs and his had a 9 in beard and 1 " spurs. My bird came in strutting, spitting and drumming to 15 yards before I shot him and my cousin took a second at 30 yards running away! Unbelievable hunt!

  2. Morning started off slow, not one gobble. Around 7 i decided to get up and find em. I worked three birds for an hour calling back and forth on a logging road but they never showed themselves for a shot. Frustrated, i hit one more spot before i left. Did a few yelps and heard a gobble off in the distance (or so i thought). waited a few minutes and called again, this time he was only about 60 yards away. I quickly tried to set up but looked up and saw him turn the corner. I panicked and quickly leaped into the woods (i was on a bike trail). About a minute later he and seven other jakes turned the corner and came right into the "decoy". My decoy was laying down on its back as it fell off the stake. They got within 35 yards and i had to make a decision to shoot before they noticed something was up. Steadied myself and picked the biggest one. I have been trying to get a bird on my birthday for 6 years and finally connected with this guy.

  3. It was a short but fun hunt this morning. Big Tom and I were walking up the power line when we stopped and Tom owl hooted. A gobbler responded immediately about 75 yards away. We quickly set out a decoy and set up. Tom owl hooted again and he gobbled again. We then had an owl start hooting and this tom responded to every hoot. We started with some soft tree talk and he became unglued with a series of gobbles the likes of which I have personally never heard. He sounded like he was trying to double and triple gobble all in one gobble. Almost sounded like he was gagging!! *lol* At about 5:25 we decided to do a fly down cackle...at 5:30 he flew off the roost and I could see him land in another tree...immediately after that I heard wings flap as he hit the ground...at 5:35 he was dead. Nice two year old bird weighing 17lbs with 7/8" spurs and a 9" beard. We used one of Tom's boxcalls and a prototype potcall that Tom made a few years back.

  7. Turkey drumming in no way resembles woodpecker pecking. Phonetically, the spit and drum might look like...."Spttt...Rrrrrrrrumm!" Sounds much more like a muffled engine revving than a woodpecker. Grouse drumming, common this time of year, would be...."Wump....Wump...Wump..Wump..Wump, Wump, Wump, Wumprrhhh!"

  8. I stopped by a friends house to drop off something and here, right in his backyard are a whole flock of possible guest (main meal) at a future backyard BBQ cookout. He never told me that he had deer in his yard like THIS! I think it was 4 or 5 that just ambled across the back 40. Does it look familiar to anybody?? I had my zoom maxed out to get these shots so the quality suffered a bit. Tasty looking critters................grin.

  9. Hunting during the week is the only way to go. My buddy and I had two birds on the ground before the weekend, should of been 3 or 4 because we messed up on a double (couldn't get the camera in position). We mainly hunt private land, in multiple locations. Then the weekend comes and guys are sneaking into our spots lol, it's like you gotta be kidding me. We were just going into one spot, just get in the woods, and a shot sounds off about 200 yards from us. We go over the rise and there is some dude walking dragging his feet, he missed the bird. I would suggest getting out during weekday mornings, if you can handle it before work. Come weekend time, everyone and there brother is out squawking on a box call.

  11. A grouse drumming sounds like an old one lunger John Deere engine starting to fire up and then dying out... I'm sure there must be films of grouse drumming on youtube... At a distance, the sound almost seems as if it is coming from somewhere INSIDE your head.. It's very hard for me to tell what direction it's coming from.... A turkey drumming no way resembles what you would EXPECT drumming to sound like.. PHFTTT.......HMMMMMMMM.... If you can hear it, he's probably within range. Some guys claim they can hear a bird drumming 100 yards away, but I've never been able to hear it more than 20-25 yards away. It is a pretty subtle sound.

  15. Easton Full Metal Jackets, (FMJ) are a phenominal hunting shaft. 11.3 grains per inch. Smaller diameter but have the weight to penetrate. Been shooting them for 4 years now and the exact same arrow has taken 6 deer and still is in perfect condition. Absolutely love them!

  16. Well I took off from work the 2nd and 3rd and headed up to my farm with my cousin. We walked and called state land adjacent to my property until about 930. I cutt loud on my mouth call and got multiple gobbles over a hill. We setup and called only a few times and the birds reponded very close and suddenly appeared on the top of the hill 100 yards out. 3 gobblers with one that never broke strut the entire time (the bird I shot). They were standing on the hill for a while gobbling at my calling but they couldnt see my decoys from their angle. I kept calling to keep them excited then heard a live hen. i called over her and cut her off everytime she spoke and eventually pissed her off so much that she had to see who the new gal was. The 3 gobblers then lost interest in the live hen and started coming to me! Then hen followed and they hung up for a while. My cousin never lost sight of the strutter but I lost all 3 of them for about 15 min. The hen suddenly appeared 20 yards away and popped her head up and saw the decoys and let out a loud series of yelps and cutts that made the 3 toms gobble and they almost blew my hat off!! The hen moved off and the strutter locked on to the dekes and came in to 15 yards spitting and drumming. I shot him and my cousin took another one of the toms running away at 30 yards! A double!!!!

  17. Some gobbling early on (kind of far off) At around 8 I set up on the edge of a field. started calling. ..10 or 15 min later I hear wicked yelping and clucking from across the field. The duration of the yelps seemed way too long so I thought it was another hunter. I was saying to myself "this @#$%@!! is calling way too much. Sure enough, around 10 min later, over a little knoll in the field comes a hen yelping her head off. I figured that she calls better than me so I let her have at it. She would scratch, peck yelp...scratch, peck yelp all while walking towards me. After a few min I caught movement on the other side of the field, maybe 150 yds straight across from me. It was 2 Toms sparing, while the stink'n hen kept yelping away. The Toms never came in but the hen got within 3 or 4 paces of me!!!I thought for sure that the Toms would be horned up enough to work their way over to the hen and give me a shot but no. The hen moved into the woods to my right and the Elton John type Toms disappeared over the knoll. It was still cool. Thats hunting.

  18. If possible slowly get up an walk away calling. Makes em think the hen is going the other way. Its worked for me in the past. Either that or switch to soft calling or get quiet altogether. Both have worked for me as well.

  21. Killed this one first thing Wednesday morning. Hunting at my Uncle's place in Naples. He came up the hill on a string.......1" spurs, 9.5" beard. About an hour later in a different location I called in 3 adults for my friend. They came in real nice also......for some reason my buddy thought they had made us and he took a shot at the closest bird at about 45 yards with the Mag 10 and off they all flew. Choked......... A couple hours later he banged a jake that was with a couple others. Good day. The next day we went to PA. Around 7am, after making a few soft calls we got a gobble from a close one. He hung up for a few minutes then came in and took a load of 4's from that same Mag 10 at 30 yards. Nice adult..... An hour later.......we spotted a bird out in a huge field about 400 yards away. He strutted & gobbled at anything! He was heading off to the east for a big wood lot. We tried to head him off at the pass and it worked. He was being difficult and came in cautiously slow. He hung up in a tangled tree top and I would get a glimpse of his head & neck for a second then nothing. This went on for a few minutes and he was pretty close, well within range of my gun. Well, I think he got into my head! I THOUGHT I had an opening and took the shot. I'm not sure if WHERE the gun was even pointed. I had been concentrating so much on finding a lane to shoot through I don't think I even aimed the damned gun. Boy does that sting...........You work so hard for them and then pull that type of stunt. There goes my "Value" thread. I jinxed it................................ Maybe I can go 9/10 for a little diminished value?

  22. Well, I had a heck of a hunt this morning and managed to call in this nice fat two year old for my cousin. Actually, I called in the two hens that he was with and he followed them in. Not bad for his first turkey...20 lbs, 9.5" beard and 3/4" spurs. He put on a heck of a show before the ole Browning barked and ended it. I'm pretty pumped, it's kill #4 for me for the season.

  27. I'd also like to add USDA standards are complete BS, there is not a single need for carbs from bread, rice, pasta, grains etc... Fats from foods do NOT make you fat, its amazing how backwards things are and what lobbyists and big money can do to even skew things like healthy eating.

  28. I use the standard Arizona E-Z fletch as I like the longer vanes . The Mini will work the same way for the shorter vanes so it should work quite well .

  29. Yep i use it to fletch a couple dozen arrows a year, very easy to use and clean and produces very precise arrows

  31. I think you guys are too eager to give these retailers a break. They have an obligation to at least acknowledge that there is a problem. Has anyone heard word one about how they intend to alleviate the situation? Anyone seen any attempt to explain anything about their inability to supply their product? Has anyone seen any sign that they are concerned for their customers? Has anyone seen any explaination as to how they are trying to thwart the hoarders? Are they doing anything to thwart the hoarders. I want to see some concern! I don't want to see a major supplier yawning and carrying on business-as-usual without their one primary product. These are the guys who have the ear of the manufacturers. They are a major account that has some clout. At the very least they have the ability to get answers and convey them on to us out of simple concern for their customers. I'm not ready to let anybody along the chain of supply off the hook. They all are part of the system that's going to have to adapt and take action. And as a very minimum, they should have the decency to communicate to their customers with more than just sale flyers.
