  1. A hidden plot in a secure area will draw deer as they won't enter a open field till after dark. It won't be a feed plot but a pure hunting plot as the deer will just stop on their way out to farm field. Ideally it should have thick cover adjacent to it so the deer feel secure and far enough in the woods/ brush so deer get to it in day light. On the edge of a farmers field isn't as good as deer will still wait for darkness to enter

  3. Wildcat, first I qualify as an old timer as I will be sixty in Dec. I did plumbing and heating. I did OK and have no regrets. I was offered an office job in computers when I was young as both my friend and brother worked with them but I couldn't work in an office. You have to go with your talents and inclinations. My brother who was a big shot in computers could barely change a light bulb so working with his hands was not an option. My best advice is to do something you don't mind doing. Are you talented with trade work like plumbing carpentry or electrical? Or do you see yourself more as an executive type? It also depends on your geographic area. In the city and LI a reliable man with a truck can do OK just doing handyman work like painting and minor repairs. In farm country I think they take care of that stuff themselves. Whatever you choose you will probably need to take some classes. BOCES and VEEB offer night classes in trades. Colleges also have night classes for Paralegal or Real Estate license. Hope this helps and good luck.

  5. That is cuz you guys live in the weird places with all kinds of screwed up regulation....Damn down stater...lol When I posted earlier I was speaking of general regulations. If you guys are asking for a specific area you may want to put that right in the post and the question.

Post in this thread using your smart phone (or other device you can get to the internet with) from your stand / woods with your thoughts, current conditions, pictures, sightings, etc. Don't forget, the site is Tapatalk enabled!

  7. Well that is just short sighted and shows you immaturity. The conversation should go more like "hey honey it is about time to rearrange you shedule again this year and pick that third job back up. Deer season starts in 2 weeks and I want the kids to have a really nice Christmas. Oh and the new rifle I want is on lay away. here is the pick up ticket. No need to wrap it for me." Geeeesh. gotta teach you guys everything.

  8. Thanks for the tip...I believe this will be OK for the strength ...load capacity/breaking strength is good and with using it properly....making sure I slide it up at a full arms reach...any slip or rung malfunction would have me swinging away and not dropping....just like I hook up in the stand...I tether high enough that there is just a slight pull when I'm seated...that way should I pass out or loose my footing I never drop below the platform...I also have a back up...I have a short rope attached to my climbing loops to that I have a long "hook"..term escapes me...and as I climb I hook the rungs above me....I use to use that with my back strap...just incase a rung let loose...and I could hook to the stand seat as I got onto the plat form...but now that will be on the life line

  14. I'll tell ya...I have done many different things in life and don't regret that with the exception of retirement funds...the best advise ....with the limited info..... the guys have given you is...don't live beyond your means...and yes money is important and great...but when working to have THINGS over shadows LIVING life...your bound to have a long sad time on earth.. At your age you should be able to work and pursue other options as well....IE..Our son 28yrs old...went to MCC for HVAC...got a job at Circuit City at the time and as long as his grades were good they payed tuition...Wegmans I think has a good program...Well they ended up teaching him install and then made him a manager...he later decided HVAC wasn't for him after 2 yrs and went into Construction...Now he still works Construction but is starting his own business doing lawns... installing side walks ...digging drainage...property work...but starting slowly and small.... All this has given him several things to fall back on...but what ever it is you attempt...do the very best you can at it...for when you do opportunities unexpected will open up for you...Good Luck

  19. Its a major funnel point. It doesnt change all that much once the corn is cut, which doesnt happen until the 2nd or 3rd week of gun season anyhow. The farmer uses an old combine that drops ears and spills all over the place, so theres always plenty for them to eat after the corn comes down. Its always a major hot spot when those 2 fields get planted in corn. Theres a stand off to the right of the frame, about 30ish yards, and another one 60 yards behind the cam. Just to the right and behind the camera is a deep creek bed, and they move up and down that alot, as well as cross the creek right there where the cam is. The bank on either side literally has an 18" deep cut in it from the deer crossing there. I will put cams near to where I hunt, but never right by my stand.

  21. I did in fact work with Neil that day and he is a great guy and seemed very knowledgable but he was also extremely busy that day so I was not sure if he was telling me not to focus on paper tuning for the simple fact that he did not have time to work with me. Anyways my broadheads and field points are flying and grouping true and within a 1 1/2inches at 30 yards so I am satisfied with that for now. If I have more time to play with then I will try and work a little more on it.

  24. You're what?? Almost 16 according to your stats? In the long run it's WAY better not to cut school to go hunting. Getting an education is way more important than killing some stupid deer or something else, this I could assure you. It's none of my business of course, but you seem to post a heck of a lot when most 15 year olds should be in class, so lots of time seems to be wasted already. It's your life, though.

  30. In general, only the extra full chokes are recommended for lead shot only, because steel shot does not compress as much as lead. Any modified or IC choke should work fine with steel. Even FULL ( as long as it is not Xtra full or SUPER full) would be safe, although you might end up with an xtra tight, ragged pattern. With modern steel shot loads, I have always had the best results with IC.

  31. Use buffered, copper plated 2 3/4" magnum loads such as Winchester XX or Federal Premium... With the reduced pellet count ,chances are #6 shot will give you the best coverage. Use the tightest choke you have..Pattern your gun to determine your maximum range..

  33. new member here, just sayin hello. This year will be my first year hunting in NY. Did some deer hunting when I was a teenager (almost 20 years ago, yikes!). Born and raised in Texas, so definately different terrain here. I'll be posting a new topic in the deer section looking for some tips etc, but wanted to come here and say hello first.

  34. Feeders, salt blocks, food - mineral blocks, all that is illegal in NY. When your in Bass Pro, Gander Mountain, etc., try not to trip over the pallets of that jazz stacked on the floor or shelves. One day I think some of these restrictions will get lifted. And then this state will see a sharp increase in welfare animals such as wild bore. Personaly I think a mineral block would help local deer but the right time to use them would be in the spring. All that other chemical waste people dump on their property they can keep imo. Food plots and care of natural browse is fairly popular. Forgot to add; not sure what area your near but look up a local fish & game - rod & gun club to sight in. Good luck.

  35. "Steel shot patterns tighter than lead shot. Generally speaking, you will want to use a more open choke when shooting steel shot than you would with lead" do you have a improved cylinder choke? that should be just about the same with steel as your modified is with lead............"

  36. the only way i can tell a dominate buck is to see group interaction, other bucks will put their heads down and get out of its way. once in a while someone will challange him, it may have a smaller rack, even a smaller body, a lot of it has to do with agressiveness. lots of big bucks in the mid west are pushed off their home ranges by younger more agressive bucks. you cannot stockpile big bucks on a property unless its high fenced. once in a while you will see an article where a hunter tried for a buck for years only to have it killed a farm or two over by someone who had never seen it before. there is even speculation that some large racked bucks do not participate in rut activities at all so they are never dominant.

  44. It is possible that the theft of my sign was an act of vandalism. Perhaps when the leaves come off in a few weeks, I might find it chucked into the brush down the road. I hate to think that it was stolen by another gun owner that just wanted to put it in his yard .... although anything is possible. On the other hand I think your idea is still a good one. By the way thank you for buying and displaying that sign. These things are popping up all over and are sending a clear message that the rage over the so-called Safe-Act has not died down as some of those guys that signed that law were hoping. It has to be giving these politicians a few nightmares.

  46. About 8 years ago durring slug season, I spotted two deer coming my way one ridge over from the stump I was sitting on. The lead doe stopped in a clear lane and she looked like a fatty so I sent an ounce of lead her way. I watched her run off and I was sure she dropped just out of sight so I immediately followed up on her. I finally got to a point I could see her white belly laying there, so my pace quickened. In my mad dash to get to her, I didn't notice the big ol' buck standing next to her dead carcass untill he took a few hops out of sight. I assumed he made his way off so I began to field dress my doe. A few minutes later, something caught my attention, and I looked up to see the buck standing there watching me gut his girlfriend. I slowly eased over to my shotgun laying a few feet away and let a shot fly from an awkward position. The buck bounded off once again, but I couldn't tell if he was hit or not. I left the doe lay while I went to look for blood from the buck. When I got to where he was standing I searched for any signs of a hit but found nothing. A little disgusted, but I'd just get back to my doe and finish up my work with her. When I picked my head up from the ground in front of me to turn around, I heard the buck blow at me and saw he'd been standing behind a tree trunk watching me the whole time. Certainly by now he'd seen enough and was probably already in the next county, so I got back to my doe, and finished cleaning her up, and began the drag home. Not long into my drag, I stopped to take a smoke break. When I kneeled down and unslung the gun from my shoulder and rested it against a nearby tree. As I sat there smoking, something once again caught my eye coming down the same bloody trail I'd dragged the doe..... yup, you guessed it.... the buck was still following all this time and I could never be ready for him even having so many oppertunities. That memory always comes to mind any time I shoot a doe durring the rut now days.
