  1. Being 17 and getting a buck like this was amazing! so blessed to have this buck, I was hunting a creek bed this afternoon and I saw the buck chasing a doe at about 4, then he reappeared around 5 coming down a mowed path hot on the doe mounting her, then came out at 30 yrds and let it fly, buck walked for about 20 yrds and sat down for 5 mins and got back up and walked 10 yrds and fell over on a cut path, I got double lungs. saw the rut in full action tonight, great experience and finally broke double digits!

  3. Long read, if I don't write it down now I probably never will. I've had a fairly gloomy outlook on this season for the past few weeks. Last year I was able to hunt nearly everyday before or after work. Now with a new job, I'm only able to hunt on the weekends when I can fit it in. After getting permission 3 weeks ago to hunt a nice parcel near my house, I've only had time to scout as I hunted. I've been out 5 times with only a few sightings, and all but 1 were does that were running away from me. My goal since last year has been to take an adult deer with the bow, but this hunt was so much more than that. I'd been looking forward to Sunday for the whole week. The temps cooled down, the wind would be in my favor and I had an open schedule. I planned to hunt Sunday morning but I woke up and easily talked myself out of that and went back to sleep. I woke up to a text from my buddy who shot a nice 8 that morning. I was pissed at myself that I didn't go out but I set out to hunt at 1pm. I set out with a stand and climbing sticks which I never used before and set up in a valley near a stream bed. I froze my ass off for 2 hours as the wind was really strong, then I packed up after the wind started blowing the wrong way. I walked around looking for sign then said screw it, and started heading back and thought I'd find another spot to sit. I skirted a field edge and thought maybe I'd walk towards where this overgrown field meets a swamp. I could see the remnants of my fathers wooden stand in the swamp, which he last hunted 17 years ago. I looked around and some oyster mushrooms on a maple tree on the swamp edge caught my eye. I walked over, dropped my gear and began picking the first mushroom. In that moment I heard footsteps in the field coming from 6' to 7' tall grass and reeds. I wasn't sure what it was so I grabbed my bow, knocked an arrow and stepped behind the maple. I peaked around the other side of the tree and grunted once. I looked and about 70 yards away in the tall grass I spot what looks to be tall tines moving up and down. I grunted again and he lifted his head up and looked towards me and started heading my way. I was shaking like a leaf and tried to get situated but I could hear him coming fast. He walked a bit passed me to 8 yards and I was exposed standing next to the tree, not behind it anymore. I had my bow up but not drawn and we had a stare down for about 45 seconds. His neck was so wide and puffed out. I could smell him as the wind was blowing into my face and I could hear him breathing and see his breath. I didn't move a muscle except for my shaking ankles. He bobbed his head and stomped his back leg, then his front. To my amazement, he turned around and started to walk back the way he came. I drew, ducked around the tree to the other side and he made a slight right heading into the swamp, presenting me with a perfect broadside shot at around 15 yards. I stopped him with a "mahhh" he turned his head and at 4:03 I sent a muzzy through him. I knew the hit had been a good one. He turned and jumped into the tall grass and his antlers appeared and disappeared every second until he was gone. I called my Dad to get ready to track and/or drag and I calmed down and picked the delicious oyster mushrooms and filled an extra hat with them. I went to look for my arrow and couldn't find it or any blood for about 5 minutes. I went back to where I shot from and really tried to remember where he was standing. I found my arrow covered in nice light red blood after 5 more minutes. The fletching had been snapped off and was missing. I decided to start tracking right away. The blood was great for the first 50 yards, spraying all over the sides of the grass in strips, sometimes as tall as 6 feet. After 15 minutes of searching, he lay dead in a small clearing in the grass, 80 yards from where I shot him. Double lung shot. Beautiful read headed 9pt. After a few minutes of bragging to my friends, my father met me there and we began the drag. He carried my gear and I dragged. During the drag I noted 2 or 3 loaded apple trees in the overgrown field where this buck came from. I must have missed this in my "scouting." It took just over 2 hours to drag him the 1/2 mile back to the road and I loved every second of it. My father and I, a sky full of stars and my first bow buck, it was great. After a little help from a neighbor with a tractor, he got him from the road to the house, and that's when I felt my lower back tighten up =) This is the best buck I have taken, not biggest but the best. This is my first bow buck, my first deer taken from the ground, and the first deer I grunted in. It's also the closest shot I've made and the first time my father has gotten in on the action. Your season can change in a minute, I went from being sad about the season to shooting a great buck and having an experience that is still making me smile as I type this. I will post pics when I get home. Thanks for reading.

  4. Saturday (10/26) - Morning hunt in the Creek Ladder Stand; Temps in the 40's and breezy with stronger gusts out of the SW. I was hoping they would be moving with the rut creeping up on us and with the storm front that's due to move in later in the day....And they were moving - -Seen a coyote and 5 bucks! At about 8:20 AM I heard some grunting mixed in the wind that sounded like it came from somewhere in front of me. I tried picking apart the landscape in front of me. Then finally some movement about 40 - 50 yards off caught my eye and I could see deer legs moving...then I saw antlers. It was a buck and coming my way. He was grunting and moving slowly in the right direction. As he was getting closer the binocs confirmed it was a SHOOTER through the thick brush but he had stopped moving. Then I saw some deer legs to my left. It was a smaller buck, a little 3 or 4 point. The next thing I know the shooter buck runs at the smaller buck. Now I could see that the shooter was a mature 8 point. The smaller buck ran towards me and went by less than 10 yards from my tree but the 8 didn't follow. Instead, he ambled back towards the thick brushy area and started to rub a tree. Then while watching him I saw another deer coming through the area. A small 6 point was walking towards the 8 point. But the 8 wasn't going to have any of that - the next thing I know, the 8 point ran at the 6 point and chased him right by my tree. Then the 8 point circled back towards the thick brushy area. Now the 6 point was walking right behind my tree - less than 5 yards from my tree; thankfully the wind direction was right. As the 6 point crossed behind me, the 8 point didn't like him circling towards the thick brush area again and the 8 point started walking towards him and grunting...Perfect...right towards my shooting lane. Now the 8 point is standing less than 20 yards from me but with a tree directly in front of his vitals. I stood at full draw for what seemed like an eternity waiting for him to take that final fatal step...but he didn't. Instead he turned directly away and walked in line of that darn tree. As I was thinking about blowing on my grunt tube, I heard movement behind me again...Oh yeah, that little 6 point was still there. Now when he walked again, the 8 point had enough of that. He turned again, heading to the 6 point and again heading towards my shooting lane. This time he walked like a deer with a mission towards the 6 pointer but again managed to stop behind a tree. As I was at full draw again, he finally did it...He took the step I needed exposing his chest region. He was about 18 - 20 yards away and staring at that little 6 point. I let the arrow fly......THWACK; God I love that sound of a good hit. The buck ran towards the pines and out of sight but I heard a crashing sound within seconds of him running away. I was hoping the crash was him going down and not just running through the pines. I was concerned about the shot because the buck had bolted towards the 6 point seemingly at about the same time I released my arrow. I let my arrow fly at about 8:45 and I waited until 10:00 to be sure since I was concerned about the hit. Funny thing...while sitting there two other smaller bucks, a small 6 that could have been that 6 from earlier and a 4 point came through the area. When I got down and went to the spot the buck was standing at the shot...No blood and No arrow. Oh boy...Not liking this. I got on my knees and looked in the direction that I thought I heard the crash and ... Oh Yeah...white belly just into the pines! As I headed that way now, I came across some decent blood and found my arrow. Then, I walked up to him...Oh Yeah...a nice mature 8 point bucK! Love this time of year! Good Luck all.....Hunt Safe, Hunt Hard, & Have Fun!

  7. Just want to start out by saying, this is the first time ever hunting on Halloween day. in all my years i never was able to get out and one of the things i always wanted to do was harvest a buck on this day. i slipped into my stand this morning around 5:40am, not 15 minutes later i hear walking around from behind me and i figured id start getting my mask on and get ready. the foots steps seemed to have stopped and i did not hear anything walk off so i knew what ever was there is still there... at first light i notice a few doe walking in from behind me, they were standing there in the dark the entire time. For some reason the doe were all corralled up in this thick area literally around my tree. Standing for awhile, grazing leaves and the yearling were even playing together. ive never seen deer hang around so long, it looked like they all sticking close by eachother. i know from my past few sits in this tree these doe were being run pretty hard so i didnt know if that had anything to do with it. at around 8:45 most of the deer had moved off and i sat there for another 15 minutes not seeing anything. It felt like it was one of those morning where anything can happen and at any time, nice overcast and no wind. i decided to hit the MAD Hyper Growl and do a sequence of long grunts followed by a snort wheeze then another long grunt. i waited 10 seconds or so and repeated. No sooner then i get my call back in my pocket i hear crashing through the woods and heavy steps, no doubt a buck coming so i get ready. This buck squirts in fast looking for what made the calls. Hes turning his head fast in every direction. He then steps into my lane at roughly 30 yards broad side but with his off leg far back in mid step. As i release my arrow it felt great, i watched as the fireknock hits it mark but no pass through. i knew the arrow stopped in his off leg after impact. The deer kicks, and makes a dash and stops 40 yards from where i hit him and crashes down. the whole thing lasted 8 under 10 seconds, text book im thinking. i was so surprised i could even see him go down in the thick cover i am hunting. upon finding him hung up in brush i could see where the arrow hit the off leg confirming my thoughts. i have this deer on trail cam from the past 2 weeks and he seemed to frequent past this stand. My origonal thought was i was going to pass this deer when i saw him. when i saw him come in this morning i thought he was slightly bigger then what i thought and being halloween, this was my buck! After 2 previous seasons trying to iron out the RIGHT tree and learn how i was going to make the perfect ambush after all the countless encounters with deer over the 120 and 130" mark, i was finally able to get one to feel comfrotable enough to step into a lane offering the shot anyone could ask for. The rage did its job and simply ate him up! breaking bone in and out with ease... after the gut job i can see i took out lung and almost cut the heart in half. for those who say the job starts after the shot, well your right. the drag out and effort to get him out of this spot thats a half mile in was fun to say the least, after he was tagged and all loaded up a sence of accomplishement had hit me. i was in the woods by myself today and did not have my partner with me so getting him in the truck was interesting lol with things heating up in the woods and another tag to fill you know where ill be! good luck to all you guys!

  14. Saturday I headed out into the woods and on my way in I notices some fresh deer tracks in and out of a known game trail. I decided to park myself there hidden behind some fallen tree branches. After sitting in the cold rain for 4 hrs I decided to move to a new location. I had recently discovered some new trails which lead to the interior of my property and skirted around a large hill in the center of the property. The trails were wet and I figured I get in there silently and get some deer to move as I had seen zilch all morning. About 15 yrds into my walk I run into this huge black bear. When I say this guy was pushing past a conservative 500lbs I am not exaggerating. He made a quick trot for about 50yrds into some heavy woods then slowed down a bit and began to walk towards me again. I wasn't certain if he had seen me and was just looking around. At this point, I crapped my pants thinking it this is one of those 1 in a million black bears that turns out not to be timid I am in trouble. At about 60yrds he walks between a V-shaped maple that gave me about a 1ft by 1ft space directly to his chest. I had nothing to lean on as it was a wide open trail and not possible to kneel down due to the elevation in terrain. If I was gonna do it it was to be a free standing shot. The rifle fires and this massive bear darts up the steep terrain. Half way up the hill he slows down to a moderate trot and it is not clear to me if he was hit or not. He hides behind some branches but still on the move in my direction on the side of the hill and I thought if I can get a shot he will come rolling down the hill as if he reaches the top there is no way I am getting up there in this rain. I take a second shot but I knew the second shot was a poor one due to all the cover. On the second shot he darts up the hill and when he reaches the very top he stops and looks at me for a minute. If there was ever a more perfect shot that would have been it but like I said it wasn't a good day to climb that mountain so I let him go his way. Now this all happened in a matter of seconds to minutes. After the excitement winds down I pull out my gps to turn it on as I still wasn't sure if my first shot was successful and I was going on a tracking mission in deeper woods. Go figure my battery is dead. I pull out my iphone and sure enough battery is on its way out. I look around and see no blood so I head back to camp grab a fresh pair of batteries. My neighbor had heard the shots and came to see if I needed help dragging something out of the woods. We both head out and trace my steps. We saw where the first bullet had hit a thick branch in the tree. The second shot I had doubts on but we wanted to make sure this awesome animal was not injured by it. So we treck up the steep hill slipping and sliding the whole way. We follow his tracks and not a drop of blood for about a mile. His tracks finally go into my neighbors swampy area and lost it from there. While on this mission we ran into tons of deer. A couple were quite nice but it was their lucky day as we were on a different mission. I headed back home with a great story, bruised ego and sore muscles from tackling that terrain. I hope to run into this guy again someday unless I have permanently scared this giant away.

That being said, we will be voting NO on Prop 1 as a thank you to Emporer Coomo for the SAFE Act. I have been encouraging all of the registered voters I know to do the same.

  18. This is an idea at the federal level that anti-gun politicians would like to pass, but as of this date, it has no hope for passage. Individual states may pass laws prohibiting the possession of ammo not purchased and registered in their state though. None of this has any intention of reducing crime at all. It's just PEOPLE CONTROL!

  19. hah you have it exactly right. I wasn't going to walk that way, I was planning on sneaking in deeper into the swamp but I saw the oyster mushrooms and decided to stop first and grab them. Now they will always hold a special place in my heart. Tonight will be tenderloin on the grill with oyster mushroom stir fry.

  21. So let me get this straight..... 1. You wait all week to hunt then decide to sleep in for the morning hunt. 2. You get out in the afternoon and sit for 2 hours before deciding to move. 3. You wander around looking for sign and/or another place to sit 4. You become distracted by mushrooms you found along the way and decide to go mushroom picking. 5. Big deer happens to wander by while you're picking mushrooms and you stick him. Do I have this right? If I was you I'd go buy a lotto ticket.

  23. I hunt in 9R. On October 16th I watched 5 bucks chasing a doe all over the place but haven't seen any chasing since then. It must have just been 1 early doe coming in estrus. The deer are getting hit left and right on the highway near my house and that's always a sign that the rut is getting into full gear. I haven't been able to hunt the last few days due to rain, high winds or work but I get to go out everyday this coming week. I AM PUMPED!!!!

One of the best shots I ever saw was a fellow who took an open sighted S&W (either a .44 or .357 I can't recall which) sat on his ass and banged a woodchuck at 150 yds while resting his elbows on his thighs. My friend Tom was with me as we watched, I don't know who was more surprised, me & Tom or Punxsutawney Phil's bro.

  30. Yeah, Larry... back years ago I used to be a FAIR offhand shot.... Woodchucks at 100 yards were in reasonable peril... No more...Nowadays I can't hit a bull in the ass with a banjo offhand...Unless he is REALLY close. Actually, I shoot better at MOVING targets offhand than stationary ones.. The fluid motion plus my wingshooting experience seems to help...Still, they need to be CLOSE...

The blind is only 600 yds behind the house so getting him in there was not a big deal.He was an avid outdoorsman right up to when he passed away this July. We always hunted and fished together .Every time I go near this a flood of memories come to me .He is missed

  41. Out of all the negatives I listed the biggest negative is that King Cuomo is pushing for it. Like everything else he is involved in in one way or another it is going to come back and bite the citizens of this state. I was not claiming that my community is comparable to the gangster era 20's or that we are flooded with hookers, although I do live right next to the Canadian Border where smuggling drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, and people happens on a daily basis and a casino makes it quite convenient to launder money. I was just trying to point out some of the negative things that come along with the casinos and just like Detroit casinos are not going to save NYS.
