  2. So with having a job and only being able to hunt the weekends I decided to take today and the rest of the week off to finish out my bow season in hopes of getting a buck. I couldnt have asked for a more perfect morning with the snow and the temperatures. Got in my climber early, sitting there about 25 ft up freezing my you know whats off, i hear leaves and twigs snapping across the ravine behind me about 80 yds away. Already standing up in my climber trying to stay warm I turned around and saw a deers body, grabbed my binos, and as soon as i could get a good look through the trees i could see it was a decent buck. I grunted until he heard me, he stopped, made a hard right, headed down the ravine angling back towards me, finally he gets within eye sight so i draw back my bow, he crosses another creek bottom that dumps into the ravine and he decides to stop directly underneath my climber. i sat there at full draw for what felt like an eternity but realistically about 3 mins while he stood looking around. After nearly missfiring due to all the layers i was wearing i let off and turned around, snow falling onto his back off my boots and climber, he begins to walk up the steady slope of the ravine my stands at, still no shot, he begins to turn broadside up the hill so i started mewing, he stepped in an opening between a clump of trees, it was now or never. it all happened so fast, as soon as i thought he was stopped i drew back, put my bottom and middle pin where i thought the vitals were and let the arrow fly. he took off like a bat out of hell i could see i hit him right sqyare in the middle of his body. I watched him run back into the open bottom of the ravine and could no longer hear movement. i assumed he bedded down in the tall grass, so i waited about 15 mins, slowly made my way down the tree shaking like a leaf the entire time. went to where i made the shot and couldnt find a speck of blood, determined to find the start of his blood trail i went down to where i saw him jump the creek hoping that leap would produce blood and to my amazement i could see what i thought was his rack sticking above the grass, but i wasnt sure i thought maybe it was a log and some branches, but a closer look i could see his body through the grass. he had piled up right where i last heard him and caught a glimpse of him. turns out it was a 50yd shot, entered his right side through the last two ribs and made its way through his liver and both lungs and the opposite side of his rib cage only coming short of 100% pass through by the thickness of his cape. When i found him his front leg was tangled up in his rack. he was dead 20 seconds after i shot him. arrow stirred his inner workings pretty darn good. he is an anomaly of a buck for the area i hunt, the taxidermist who lives up the road is darn sure he is atleast 3.5 years old. he rough scored him at 130.5... ill take that any day of the week.

  3. ok so on sunday morning i had two buddies both shoot deer and needed help with the recovery so i went and helped them, We found both animals and then we went and looked for my buck again, 100 yds into the track we found his first bed and the we jumped him, He took of at a good clip limping hard on his right front leg, we watched him go 3 hundred yds across an open bean field, and he disappeared out of sight when he swam the outlet, So im thinking he isnt hurt as bad as i thought, Second Belo i really dont care what you think or even what your thoughts on this subject are, this entire post has been filled with nothing but ignorant horrible comments from you, I had the scenario worked out i just had to call and wait for a response, But then again if you couldnt understand that from my previous posts, You are not intelligent enough to understand much, You can continue with personal attacks against my decision, But seeing as you dont know anything about me you truly have no clue what your running your mouth about, You have no clue how close to property lines i was when i took the shot and you have no clue on how much time myself and friends took to look for this deer, The original post said sorry just venting, Its all it was, I do thank everybody else on here who realize that things happen that are beyond are control and have supported my decisions and understand, Again thank you i would be glad to help any of you anytime, Most of you seem like great people, But Belo you are a horrible person and just so you know you truly are clueless, I hope you never have the same problem i just did, Being as your perfect i really dont understand how that could happen, But hey i would even help you if you needed it because thats how i am, Again thank you everybody for the support, I learned some important things this year and i will not allow the negativity of one person ruin my decision to stay a law abiding citizen who cares about the wishes of landowners around me, Again thank you for the support,

  4. A buddy of mine got his first bow buck and best buck to date on Saturday. He called me at around 10 Saturday morning saying he shot a buck but needed help tracking. He said he tracked for a few hundred yards, bumped the bedding buck and then couldn't tell where it went after that. He says he shot it in both lungs. Not sure how it ran so far with a double lung shot, I get there and we start tracking. He was hunting a stand 200 yards into the woods and saw nothing. Came out to his Jeep to leave and two 8's and 2 spikes ran buy, and he shot one of the 8's. He tracked it 200 yards to his stand (LOL) and it kept going. Blood is great at first, some big spots and big pools and a lot of disturbed leaves so we could follow his path pretty easily. Then the trail went dry and he said, "I already followed him to his bed, let's check it out." So we go to his bed in the all grass and prickers and sure enough, a lot of blood. Saw some spots on the sides of prickers which told us the direction he went off his bed. I noticed 4 clumps of leaves that were overturned, about 8 or 10 feet apart which looked like the buck hopped down the hill. Found another few spots of blood and the buck lay dead 50 yards away. In all, we tracked it like 4 or 500 yards. He shot it through both shoulders and had a pass through, I wonder how it ran so far. It was a fun track and was great practice. It looks like a 1.5 year old with great genetics. Body size was short and small.

  5. Got this 6pt. on Sunday morning. Lots of deer on their feet. Best part was I had my 10 year old son in the tree next to me and he saw the shot up close. Does it get any better? Good luck to everyone else. Bring on gun season....

  7. Finally listened to all my buddies and took all the courses this summer and decided to pick up a bow two weeks ago. After the first 10 minutes of firing some arrows, I absolutely fell in love with it. Read a S*%t ton of material for about two weeks straight and after shooting about 500 arrows, I decided to get into the woods and give it a try. Got permission to hunt up at my buddies house, so I looked around property for some life and finally saw some promising signs ( fresh scrapes..ect) and posted up 20 yards away at the base of a tree. Have to say that just being out there alone was amazing. Within the first 20 mins I spotted a doe about 100 yards away just leasurely hanging out and already had the blood pumping in my veins. I bought a cheap buck caller and was periodically giving a few grunts. 20 mins go buy and I hear some rustling to the right of me. Figuring it was a squirrel running around, I slowly turn and see a gorgeous 6 pt buck about 30 yards away, slowly walking my direction. I couldnt have been less prepared at that moment for this deer to walk through. My bow was basically lieng on the ground beside me and I didnt even have an arrow nocked. By some miracle, I was able to grab my bow, nock and arrow, and draw without this buck seeing me. I waited for him to get completely broadside and took the shot. I watched as the arrow flew about 2" above his back and he ran about 40 yards and just sat there staring at me stomping his hoofs, looking around to see what the hell just happened. I had fired about 60 arrows that day before I went out and was confident of my ability to make a good vidal shot at that distance, but nerves had gotten to me and it was 100% human error. I couldnt believe how bad I just blew it. But I sat there quietly for about another hour and kept periodically trying to call in another buck. about 20 minutes go buy when I see this 4 pt buck running full steam towards me. He stops about 15 yards infront of me, turns around so he is quartering away from me, and just stands there for 2 mins looking around. He was too small to shoot, so I just watched him and waited for him to walk off. He was so close that I coudl probably have thrown a spear at him, all while sitting at the base of a tree. First time hunting in my life and I saw two bucks within the first two hours. My Buddies couldnt believe how lucky I was, considering some of them have hunting for an entire season and not gotten to draw on a buck. Sounds a bit odd, but I am glad that I missed that 6 pter. I feel as thought I didnt deserve to take down a deer like that on my first trip out and havent put enough time in to earn that kill. Non the less, was an incredible day and It is safe to say that I am absolutely hooked. I know that I made every single beginners mistake in the book, but know now what I have to do now to get tuned in. Stevie Sacs

  8. I will shoot a doe at 715 the first morning if the opportunity presents itself. I go for meat and that is meat in the freezer.

  9. I don't see why people on this site argue over what is better sitting, walking, stand, or blind. Why not utilize every means available. I once started a thread on here blinds vs treestands and it was amazing to sit back and watch and laugh at the responses people wrote. This year I hunted from the ground, tree stand, ground blind, platform blind and anything else I could think of.

  10. If I were him, I would not respond again either. The worst are the chameleons. Say one thing as the tide goes that way then when it changes, jump on the other side. Then when you say something, you are attacking them. They just like to keep the boiling pot of crap stirred is all.

  11. Being 17 and getting a buck like this was amazing! so blessed to have this buck, I was hunting a creek bed this afternoon and I saw the buck chasing a doe at about 4, then he reappeared around 5 coming down a mowed path hot on the doe mounting her, then came out at 30 yrds and let it fly, buck walked for about 20 yrds and sat down for 5 mins and got back up and walked 10 yrds and fell over on a cut path, I got double lungs. saw the rut in full action tonight, great experience and finally broke double digits!

  12. No palpitations with my heart so far. You guys are the ones that will bring the coronaries upon yourselves with the lack of any exertion. LOL Might as well keep a defibrillator in that tree stand too, just in case.

  13. At least 30 mins before first light so I can get a chuckle as I watch the tresspassers flash light gong through the woods and the inherent swearing as he realizes his stand is gone. Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk 2

  14. You don't need a treestand, stay on the ground ,it is more exciting way of hunting. Learn to work the wind. Learn how to break up your outline. You will learn when and how to move and draw and you will become a better hunter if you put your time in.Then you can call yourself a hunter and not a shooter from a treestand.

  15. And that right there is why we have such a problem in NY. NO TEETH IN THE LAWS

  16. I find it funny how people get frustrated when they don't ever see the deer they capture on their game cams. Maybe they shouldn't put any cameras out and then they won't need to get frustrated? Simple solution really. Just go hunt and not worry about what was there when you weren't.

  17. QDMA suggests killing does early and often for the following reasons: 1. Deer management means killing does to balance the heard or more often to just reduce numbers. No matter what your goals are unless you need more deer (which is not the case most places in New York) shoot does. 2. Mature does kick yearling bucks to a new range...if the lead does are already dead, young bucks stick around 3. The fewer does the greater the competition for the remaining does during rutt, thus more mature buck activity. 4. Easier to determine buttons from mature does early on, as the season moves on the buttons get to be about the same size as the does meaning more mistaken buttons...though harvesting buttons is also part of the state's deer management plan. 5. Live Practice is the Best Practice for when the big boy shows up. 6. It is harder to harvest ANY deer as the season progresses.

  18. So you are asking for a written law that says something is LEGAL? NY doesn't have suck a regulation against it and if you don't feel you can keep it straight it may be unethical for you. If someone has more onthe ball it is probably fine for them. You can turkey hunt with a bow and that head construction is different. You can even carry a .22 pistol while deer hunting with a rifle or shotgun so you could shoot small game if you wish. But I wouldn't suggest that to you either since in the excitement you may goof up and shooot the deer with the 22.

  19. It's funny. Depending on how you view it, there's either 3 days left of bow, or 3 days till gun haha

  20. Another tip for tipping your jigs: Use tiny slivers of dried apple...works great, especially when you pull a "grub" out of your mouth to bait up in front of other fishermen. Just explain that "They work better when I warm them up a bit!"

  23. This is rediculous! He feels terrible about losing a trophy deer and seems honest and respectful and many others just try to make it worse. Making others feel worse in a bad situation is a very horrible character trait. Like all our mothers told us, "If you don't have anything nice to say then don't say anything". I learned quickly that if you bow hunt you are going to hit deer poorly and there is a good chance you might not recover, it's part of the game. I wish you best of luck finding that deer. Had a similar situation last season on a very big buck. I know no one feels worse than you. Everyone should look at stats about the number of deer involved in car accidents. Should we all stop driving?

  37. When rage first came out i played with them- had a bunch of Oring issues and the one deer i shot wiht them the blades were bent and the edge was turned over- very poor broadhead...but am not sure if the new ones work better or just have new marketing for a similar inferior product. I shoot reapers- and have for 5-6 years..... hated mechanicals prior but they tune easier and kill well. Guessing 12-15 kills and one loss. The loss was my fault. The broadheads did there part every time. I do agree that theyre not the sharpest..BUT i found a cheap and pretty amazing fix. A cheap Smiths boradhead sharpener from cabelas or gander works wonders on these. I have actually resharpened some used blades and used them again. This is something i never thought should be done. I also sharpen then blades new. Easy fast and works wonders in terms of ethical kills. Just my two cents...

  38. They all used to use Jeeps and quads to get up the hills way back in my area of the Catskills, that's until the DEC stopped and fined all of them. This was in the mid 80's when it was more of a sport to drive the Jeep up the mountain than it was to hunt. It took a few years before everyone said the heck with climbing mountains and stopped hunting here. After some time the hunting improved because of it. Less hunters has made the herd grow, now there is a good healthy herd here, by me anyway, and I get more big bucks on my cameras than small ones now. Back in the day you were proud to shoot a spike. It sucks to have to climb steep mountains to hunt at my age but the quality of bucks I see here keeps me motivated.

  43. For all he knows is a tree branch fell, but he wasn't taking any chances so he continued on. I'd say your odds of seeing him again are fair. Maybe not on the same trail at the same time, but that deer didn't go far.

  44. Hey fellow Archermen and women. My Brother and I drove down to camp Thursday evening, didn't get set-up and in bed until 1 am. I knew I wouldn't want to get up in the morning but obviously the rut is starting to get under way. Plus, we haven't been to camp since Oct. 15th or something. We both had the itch. I'll fast forward, in the stand 6:30, at 8:08 I see this buck behind me, he's at about 30 in lots of trees walking away, he's about to cross the powerline that runs through our property which would put him at 50-70 yards. Well he does what we all pray for, he picks up the scent drag at about 40 or so yards, snaps his head 180* and walks right in to about 17 yards. I placed a nice 100 grain Muzzy through both lungs, and he expired within 70-100 yards. My best buck to date, I'd say he weighed in the ballpark 175-185, he's a brute and even with incredible adrenaline, it still took a while to drag him out. I'm back home and I'm going back for a doe Tuesday-Friday. Good Luck to ALL!!!

  45. I understand your frustration, but they are volunteers who cover a large area and have lives outside of looking for someone else's deer 24x7. Keep looking, keep positive and I hope you find him. I have been through the exact same thing 3 years ago.
