  11. Thanks guys, glad you all enjoy the journal! I'm hoping to stumble upon a few early drops soon, but in the mean time, the snow here is just too darn deep for any real "antler hunting"..... it's still WAY early but I know there's a few out there waiting to be rescued and probably even a few I missed last year. We got a good bit of rain today and more on the way this weekend to melt some of this white crap away. Now that I got my legs stretched out the last few days, I'll start to cover some more ground looking for some more deadheads in some of the usual thickets they seem to turn up routinely year after year. I don't like finding all the dead ones after season, but in a weird sort of way I feel recovering someones unrecovered buck is the best way for me to salvage some of that excitement they missed out on, and give those trophies the final resting place they deserve and will be admired and appreciated. Hoping to have something to show after the weekend, but it's a loooooooong season full of unknown ups and downs. I'm just happy shed season is finally here!

  14. And people that see that what A&E did was nothing but cowtowing to the liberal extremist minority, have the right to speak their minds on it. Face it, its just more bowing down to the PC bull crap that is so prevalent now days. a&E will face the repercussions of their actions as well. Btw, did you read what the man actually said. Not really much ignorance in it. Im not religious, and dont necessarilly agree with everything he said, but none of it was ignorant. The only ignorance has been from the people saying it was some kind of hate mongering. Id be willing to bet most of them havent read the whole statement, in its full context.

  15. A guy that I used to hunt with at his place upstate, told me that he and a relative did some pigeon hunting .. They'd get permission from farmers and put out decoys in a field and did really well. He told me that you can burn up a whole lot of shotgun shells, and get a lot of birds. He said that pigeons up there, as opposed to city pigeons, were good to eat. I think that he said dark meat. I remember a poultry store on LI used to sell pigeons to eat.. They called them squab, but sure looked like pigeons to me. My fiend drove me around and showed me some farms and how many pigeons were around, there were loads of them. I never got to do it with him because our lives changed. I forgot about it, but today I was looking for crows and in some areas and saw a number of pigeons, and made me think of it. I don't know how you can tell feral from domestic pigeons, like the one that race, but I guess if they're hangin' around farms they are wild We may never get a dove season, but I guess it could be like dove hunting . Does anyone pigeon hunt ?

  20. The reason most want to go with smokeless these days is to have much increased pressure over black powder and to shoot their bullets without sabots. The energy and velocity they get is outstanding and shooting to 300-400 yards is very common. I have a friend who has built a couple for himself off of Model 70 s/a rifles. He has used both Kreiger and Brux barrels and you would NOT believe the accuracy!! He uses Parker 275BE slugs that are, oh what is the word for it......swagged down to fit real tight for super accuracy and no gas loss.

  21. Way different pressures between smokeless and blackpowder.putting smokeless in a blackpowder gun is basically asking for a gun to take your hands and face off

  28. Heck yes, Greybeard...I've shot hundreds of them over the years..They are very good eating..Dark meat, similar to wild duck..The only thing is, the older birds tend to be somewhat tough, so you need to use a slow, moist method of cooking, like braising, slow roasting, pressure cooking, or crockpot. The meat is all in the breast..I simply skin and cut the breast away and discard the rest... In the crockpot, put a layer of pigeon breasts, a layer of onions, another layer of breasts, etc. salt, pepper and then add some red wine and cook all day on low ..Good stuff. They also provide some very challenging wingshooting.. I have a local dairy farmer that lets me come down once or twice a year and shoot pigeons..He has dozens of them hanging around his corncribs and silos. It's a great way to spend a winter afternoon and burn up a few dozen shotshells. Field loads of #6 or 7 1/2 shot do the job just fine.

  29. Well said men (Larry n Antler). Sometimes you got take risks for big rewards. I left a stable job in 2009 at 25 years old during a bad economy for another job. It was risky and my friends/family thought I was nuts. Now I make more than double what I made in 2009, but much more importantly I enjoy going to work each day. I work with many people who were my superiors 4 years ago and now they report to me. Of course, they are jealous n whine. I don't feel bad for them. I had no connections and got to where I am through hard work. I went to a crappy college and have ivy league graduates under me. Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk 2

  32. Typical comment from someone who thinks they know how it works. Many will make claims to what they'd do with money, but they always change their minds when they get it. I just received a very, very nice bonus. The government took almost half of it. But hey those on welfare worked hard for it, not me right? Vote blue and it'll continue to happen.

  33. I have a long draw also. I am almost at 30 inches so I am pulling 51 52lbs with my bow. I would get some finger pinch if I went much under 60 inches for my bow length. As it is I have some pretty funky calluses on my shooting fingers. Hunting traditional is very addicting. I haven't touched a compound in 10 years. It is so much more fun knowing you have to outsmart the deer by being so much closer.

  34. They don't want the sounders dispersing away from trap sites and the swine becoming educated and more wary. Currently there is only a handful, they are not as fearful of people as they can be, and the problem is still manageable. I suspect the DEC might also be concerned about the political impact of southern hog hunting practices. The use of dog packs, very often pit bulls, and hunters finally killing the pig - when the dogs don't, with a spear or buck knife isn't going to fly well around here. Sometimes they even hobble the animals 4 legs and I assume transport it home alive before killing it. Even if the DEC acts preemptively and imposes regulations before this activity grows around here, it would require a few rounds of the law / regulation / rule making process - complete with public comment periods on each of the practices I described. That public comment phase would generate millions in donations for the HSUS, generate publicity for them, and increase their credibility. Anyone who understands how the HSUS operates knows this. Ironic many of you are criticizing this considering that the USDA's Wildlife Service is involved. I say it is ironic because typical Wildlife Service employee would have an attitude similar to many of you. Many of you would fit right in the work place culture and make good wildlife services employees ( assuming you can actually shoot or trap stuff,...) They are passionate about killing all predators and other species they are directed to by their bosses. They are allowed and do use poison, traps, air planes, helicopters, and a variety of contraptions, day, night, summer, winter, bait, no bait. I attempted to post a recent video about this not long ago under a post titled former federal employees blow whistle. Although, I was not able to paste the link, the video is up on you tube and elsewhere. It isn't necessary to watch that video to learn about wildlife services, you can go to the USDA's website and find the link to wildlife services. Hey, they might even be hiring... FYI: USDA is the United States Department of Agriculture. Wildlife Services is NOT the US FWS and it is an agency within the USDA. Now do you like it?

  37. I don't understand the controversy here. He has the constitutional right to make ignorant and silly statements and his employer has the right to suspend or terminate him if they feel that his statements reflect negatively on the company. His right to free speech was not taken away. He's simply being held accountable for his statements. The company has the right to make sure that the shows that they air reflect well on them.

  38. Early...You like to use the word "hate" when referring to people who don't approve with other philosophies, such as the gay lifestyle. How is someone's expression of thier opinion about gay people any more hateful than the statement that you just made about "bible thumpers" ? I guess I am to assume that in your mind it is unacceptable to make negative statements about gay people, but it is perfectly acceptable to make negative statements about " bible thumpers"...

  39. Phil Robertson knew what he was getting into and couldn't care less But whatever happened to:'I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it,' People in this coutry are losing their backbone. He can say whatever he wants, wherever he wants. A&E will see their consequences when the Robertson's move to The Discovery Channel. And they wanted him to stop saying Jesus in his prayers and even cut it out on some episodes. Keep changing the country to suit the minority factions.

  41. What an ignorant statement! Its now a crime to invent something, get it patented, and make money from it in the United States? I suppose he should share his wealth with all the losers who don't want to work hard for what they have? I'd like to know how this country supports his lazy ass? I think you're the loser! Or maybe you're just offended by his comments because you partake in that sorta thing.
